You've been through a really tough time over the past few months that would tax anyone. Make sure you mention not just your physical discomforts but also your emotional ups/downs. Demand the help that you need regardless of how trite it may sound because depression is not trite. Emotional help and well-being are a big part of any recovery.

Glenda - as a newcomer, I don't know you well, but I've enjoyed your photos and your postings. I'm so sorry this isn't going well for you: having had a hip replacement myself, I know it shouldn't be this hard, and I'd certainly be asking my surgeon to get me back on the right track. Once you get over this hump, I assure you the new hip will give you a new lease on life. So hang in there. Best wishes.

Oh this has been such an ordeal for you! I'm so sorry that you're still having problems. And I know how frustrating it can be wanting only to get better and not get there.

I have a dear friend who is 97 and has been bedridden for years from arthritis. And yet she still looks forward to each day, keeps smiling and is a pleasure to visit. I asked her if she's frustrated not being able to get out of bed. Once in a great while she might express how she wishes she could do more for herself. But mostly she is upbeat. She says it's because she doesn't like feeling sad, angry, or down, and those feelings certainly don't make anything better. So instead she looks for the positive each day, choosing to spend her days making the best of what she's got. I look to her as a role model...something I aim for though I doubt I'll ever achieve it.

I'm sending you thoughts of strength, patience, healing, comfort, positivity and stamina as you go through this tough, tough time.

I don't know your circumstances or what the problem is but is there a possibility that this is fluid and not swelling from the surgery? If so, ask the doctor for a lymphedema therapist. They can teach you how to move the fluid away from the leg.

I join others here in thinking you could use a second opinion. There are tons of orthopedic surgeons out there. Have any of your friends had better results with another doctor?

I hope he gives you something to release the inflammation. I take a med every day for that. If it were me, I would tell the dr. , I am finding myself depressed at times". God bless you.

Glenda, my sister went through the same thing in her late 70s. In recent years, she has had both hips, both knees and both shoulders replaced. Doctors do not agree to the source of her problems, but arthritis and shallow hip sockets seem to be contributors to the problem. one hip needed corrective surgery to the original replacement surgery. She spent extra months recuperating, depressed from her struggles too. Today at 79, she is doing well. When we go out, she uses a wheeled walker for security. she has lost a huge amount of weight, the impetus being an antibiotic that she had to take for 4-6 weeks that made her so nauseaus that she could not eat or keep food down. and for which the doctor said there was no substitute. So she decided with that start, she ought to continue to diet to an ideal weight. In fact, I have warned her she needs to quit losing weight. She is back to what she weighed in her 20s. Hang in there, Glenda.

Edited to add that my sister had bad edema too, and her doctor sent her to an edema specialist. That slowly helped after months of therapy.

Hope your doctor has good news today on the path to your recovery. it is very taxing on many levels. i am praying for you and your full recovery.

Glenda, I talked with my sister about your situation. She has gone through the same problems as you with hip replacement, complications and bad edema. She told me to share what her doctor advised. He said that the number one best thing to do with edema is to rest with the legs and feet (which were badly swollen like yours) resting above her heart every day. She would rest on the couch with her feet and legs atop one of the couch back cushions placed under her legs. Every minute that you can do that will make for improvement. Do it as often and for as long as you can, above your heart!
