May I have some good thoughts, please?

My step-father has had recurring cancerous tumours on his bladder over the past couple years. He's had 4 day-surgeries so far to remove them. Once he had chemo intravenously and he had to turn over every 15 minutes so it would swish all over his bladder.

He recently had surgery, and had a follow-up last week. His surgeon told him that his bladder has to be removed, and that the treatment involving him turning, didn't work.

Needless to say Wally and Mom are devastated....he'll have to wear an external bag.

What is amazing about this urologist who Wally has great respect for, is HE suggested he go for another opinion. Thursday they're going to another city not too far from us, on a referral from his doctor. He wants to see if this other urologist feels the same as he where the bladder should be removed.

Wally is 72 and looks and feels 62. In April he'll have 50 years at the dealership where he's assistant service manager.

He's actually having the surgery here. Or HAD the surgery I should say. He's home and on the couch watching the tube and listening/watching the new videos I downloaded to his IPod. He says it hurts but he's so much more tough than me. I'd be in bed trying to sleep it off. :) I got the bed ready for him, but I should have known better. I guess I'd better get ready for a long week of Poker programs and The Discovery Channel. LOL (except when I take over for an hour tonight to watch Jon and Kate +8) Thanks again everyone! The mission yesterday was to relieve the pressure the tumor was causing on Jan's left optic nerve. The surgeons removed some of the bone in her skull and a very small part of the tumor. After the healing process, the next step will be to use the "Gamma Knife" to attack the tumor and ensure it does not grow. The surgery provided enough space around the optic nerve to safely and effectively use the Gamma Knife. It just amazes me what medical science can do today.

Thanks everyone!! I just now got home and had to be at the hospital at 5:45 this morning. The Dr. says he got all the stones blasted. So I got that worry off of me, but have to wait till I get through this mess before I see the other doctors. Thanks again to all my KT friends. Patty

Jasdip, my prayers and good thoughts coming your and your step fathers way. I'm impressed that his Dr suggested he get another opinion. Some Dr's are so egotistical, they are insulted if it is mentioned. I hope everything goes well with his surgery. Dottie

Please, please URGE, INSIST or do whatever whatever to get your FIL that 2nd opinion & if that Dr. agrees with 1st, have the surgery ASAP!! Thousands of people folks live normal lives, go to work each day, etc., with bladder & colonic bags w/o others ever knowing.

I lost my only Sister to the same cancer a year or so ago.
She decided against seeing another Dr. Intolerant of chemo infusion in bladder it was halted on 4th try. She did see 2nd Dr., too late, it had attached itself the bladder wall...BAD news. By then she was down to 80 pounds & three urology oncologists didn't think she could travle 300 miles to specialist for surgery, and if she did, they didn't think she would survive it.

She opted for no further treatment & with promise to be kept pain free with hospice care, she went home. In her last three weeks, she was either pain free & comatose, or pain was so great she begged to die.

Jasdip - that is the mark of a good doctor - one who suggests a person go for a second opinion. I'll keep him and your whole family in my prayers. Let us know what happens.

Thanks so much for your prayers and kind wishes. I mentioned to Mom about my post and your replies and she is so touched that you are all wishing Wally well.

I agree with you who say the doctor is a true professional to offer a referral. He called Mom personally to see if an app't was set up with the the new doctor.

I will certainly let you know what happens on Thursday, and hopefully the surgery can be scheduled soon. I realize that no one will know he has this apparatus, but it's still a shock and adjustment for sure. But it won't stop us from being on the golf course! Soldiering on!

Lots of prayers going up for Wally! Yea...if he has that external bag not many people will know except the ones he choses to tell. Wally will be back on that golf course in no time...bag or not bag!!! I have a couple friends with a colonestomy bag, no one but a chosen few know they have it. You could never tell.

You have my good thoughts and prayers. As others have said, nowadays, it can be difficult to detect the bag. Life-altering yes, but life-saving. Here's to many better and happy years for him.

Thank SO much everyone! You have no idea how this thread makes me feel. Several of them brings tears to my eyes when I read them.
I just know with all this support and prayers he'll be fine.
This truly is a great Table to be sitting at. No wonder more people want to come and sit at it. :-D
