Could we get some prayers/good thoughts for Sophie, please?

She has a cyst/hole thingy on the bridge of her nose that's been there since birth. It occasionally gets infected - very red and drains gunk. It would get worse and deeper into the bone as she gets older if we left it alone. She's having surgery tomorrow morning to have it removed. The surgery was originally scheduled for January past, then moved to April and then again rescheduled to tomorrow. I just got a call from the plastic surgeon's office that it's good to go ahead.

She's nervous about being put to sleep and nervous about the after-pain. Mama here isn't too worried about the surgery itself, but just feeling badly about Sophie's worries and anxiety - wishing I could alleviate them or take them away somehow.

If you could keep her in your thoughts and prayers today and tomorrow, it would be much appreciated.

I hope she gets the care she needs. It's very scary as a parent to hear these stories. Even if your kid isn't on the social media, the other kids are and "talking" behind her back and she knows something is going on. Schools need to stiffen the penalties for cyber-bullying as much as physical bullying - I don't know, maybe the state has to get involved, if it takes charging kids with a misdemeanor, or issuing restraining orders to prevent driving another kid to suicide then that's what it takes! DS is 15, has always been a thoughtful, sensitive, private kid with a few close friends, not into the "popular" activities but seems to be happy, is definitely busy with Scouts, track, and church. I don't know what other kids may be saying about him, but at least he doesn't know either - or doesn't care. He is going to camp counselor training in a few weeks, and then to National Youth Leadership training for Scouts, hopefully next summer he will get a job at the Scout camp. OK, I'm bragging I guess but I think he's a good role model, and I *think* he's not at risk for depression. DD is 5 years younger and starting puberty - she has 2 very close friends, and watching others coming up to her after school concert she seems to be "popular" but again doesn't have the same interests as many her age (she's also almost a year older than everyone else in her grade, both kids are Nov birthdays and we decided to start DD later than DS since he had been in daycare/preschool and was an early reader, she was a late talker/potty trainer). She's more sensitive to peer pressure - I suppose girls usually are? I wouldn't pull her out to HS unless I thought there was a serious problem, I want to wait to see if she keeps/makes friends in middle school. I hope that keeping her in Scouts will help - if the leaders can keep a group of girls aware of the problems that bullying can cause, and keep them believing in their own value in spite of other people (peers, even some siblings and parents I know of) telling them otherwise. Girl Scouts just doesn't seem to be as organized as Boy Scouts though, and not too many girls seem to keep up with it through middle and high school, from what I can tell by the size of the troops in our town. But "mean girls" start early - DD ran into one her first day of kindergarten. Add a mean teacher, and in 1st grade she was begging me to HS her! At least 2nd - 4th she has regained her love of school, is actually disappointed to have only a few days left this year.

Shelly, I wish you well. I wonder if you are having the same thing I had done 4 years ago. After several MRI's and Xrays to diagnosis the problem I went to the Neurosurgeon who injected cortizone into my neck and also my lower back. I went three weeks in a row for the shots. I also have arthritis and bulging discs. The steroid injections worked wonders and I haven't had to return yet. I am starting to get a few twinges in the same lower back area but so far nothing like what I had experienced before. There were days when I couldn't get out of bed because of the lower back pain. I didn't have any difficulty with the injections and I opted to have local shots of Zylocaine to numb the area rather than be sedated. The only pain I felt was from the first shot of Zylocaine- and that pain only lasts for about 10 seconds and then you're numb. Then he injected more Zylocaine to numb the rest of the area. My Neurosurgeon is a genius and the needles he used are amazingly thin. Most of the others patients who were there for the shots chose the sedation. I'll be thinking of your tomorrow. Try to relax.

You got it, Nicole. How long will she be in the hospital? I'm sure you wish you could have the surgery for her. Motherhood is like that.....

You got it, Nicole! OMGosh! why did they keep putting
it off? Was she sick or too scared?
I'm sure it will go off without a hitch.
I don't know how to keep her from being nervous.
I'm sure you've explained how this will make her
nose better, and that you've explained everything else.

Nicole, I bet Sophie is braver than she thinks she is. I believe she'll receive comfort and strength from you and her daddy...more than you realize.

Sending lots of special thoughts your way. Tell Sophie she'll be extra pretty once that boo boo is gone. :)

Kat, the first time they rescheduled because he had 2 emergency trauma cases to take that day. Her new date was April 29, which turned out to be our moving day so I had to call and postpone again. The soonest date he had open was Oct. 8!

For some reason, Sophie was thinking that the surgery was taking place at the doctor's clinic. Now that she knows it's in a hospital, she's actually a little excited. I guess it seems like more of an adventure to her now. Funny kid.

Alisande, It's not an overnight. She'll be out again tomorrow afternoon - a few hours after surgery.

Not to worry. It will all be over quickly. It's just hard *waiting* for it! This shows that Sophie is a smart girl to think about it. Being concerned is normal. There's nothing to be terrified about, though.

Pain meds these days are beyond good, and doctors are no longer afraid to medicate children adequately. There will probably be some 'pulling' feeling as it heals, but not *pain*. (If there is pain, raise a fuss!)

She'll be happy to be rid of this problem.

(I have had radical sinus surgery three times. The first time, 30 years ago, the recovery was slow and painful. The last time, 12 years ago, I was merely 'sore' for a day.)

Sayinjg prayers that all goes well. All I know is, when kids are hospitalized, the doctors and nurses do everything they can to avoid giving them pain. Even if it hurts a little at first, tell her it will feel better every day.

I'm so sorry Nicole. Sophia drew a pic for me too, one time when we met. I thought of her a lot on the 29th. She turned 8 and I turned 80.

You are all probably at the hospital as I type this. Your whole family certainly have my prayers. When one member of the family hurts, the rest all do too.

Please keep us posted when you can

I am thinking about you and your mom and dad, and hope you come through the surgery just fine, which I am sure you will.
Take it easy for a few days, read lots of books and draw pictures. Mom will take very good care of you.

I hope everything went well for all of you and Sophie is resting peacefull at home, with all the rest of the family waiting on her hand and foot!
I'm sure Sophie has a nice bandage on that pretty little nose of hers, and it must feel uncomfortable. When you finally get that bandage off, you will find an absolutely beautiful nose! (even if it still needs a little healing.)

She's doing very well! Thanks so much for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers.

There was no peaceful resting at home after the surgery. She was groggy for about an hour after she woke up, but by the time we got home, she was back to her regular energy level. The nurses had warned us that she'd be sleepy for 24 hours or so. Nope. They also said that she wouldn't feel hungry and would likely only want a liquid diet for the rest of the day. Nope. She was starving by the time she got home and wanted regular food. I did keep her in the house yesterday, but today she's out playing in the backyard with friends.

Her nose is still swollen and bruised, but she says she has no pain. We have pain medication if she needs it at any point. The incision looks to be about 1 cm., and is held together with a tiny piece of tape. I don't think there are even any stitches, but I guess there could be.

I'll post a picture later - I'm sure she'd be glad to pose. :) I took some yesterday, but just of the nose up close.

I am late seeing this post but SO glad to hear everything went well, and it sounds like it didnt slow her down much, huh ! Kids are amazing....looking forward to the pictures !

If they didn't tell you to come back to have a stitch removed either there isn't one, or it's self-dissolving. YEA! One little nose, all normal from now on! Good to have that behind you.
