Printer suggestions?
Comments (3)The November 2008 issue of Consumer Reports rated six all-in-one printers. The top four were all Canon Pixma models, the fifth was an Epson, and the sixth was a HP. Actually, all six performed rather well. The first Canon, as well as the Epson and the HP, had fax capabilities. #2 Canon Pixma MP970 list price $300 #3 Canon Pixma MP610 list price $180 #4 Canon Pixma MP520 list price $150. I have a really old Canon color printer (SD530D), but since I rarely have a need for color, it's just sitting here just in case. Since it was also rather slow, I got a Brother laser to do my printing. Hope this helps a bit. Holler if you need more info from the CR article....See MoreTime for a lazer jet printer?
Comments (18)Back on the subject of Brother printers (inkjet). Several years ago, I had need for a fax machine, so I went to Staples in search of something inexpensive. I was surprised to find out that I could buy a multi-function Brother machine, including fax for only $10 more than a fax alone. So I bought one for around $70. It uses separate ink cartridges, so cost of maintaining ink is very reasonable. I still have the printer, sitting in a box, because the HP inkjet I've been using refuses to die. Perhaps some day I'll be able to make use unless drivers are not available. It does have drivers for Windows 7; I don't know about Windows 8. I don't know if it could take rough usage since all parts seem to be plastic, but I am not hard on fixtures and appliances :-). I really don't print enough to need a laser printer, but the crisp, sharp look can't be beat....See MoreDid you know this about printer ink?
Comments (14)Yes, I knew there were expiration dates on ink (there's expiration dates on many things people wouldn't necessarily think about, peroxide & alcohol are just a couple) and there's also good and bad ways to store ink. You don't want to stockpile too much. I was looking in the store at the ink cartridges and wasn't surprised that the rotation wasn't maintained. Won't name the store. A couple people go crazy when it's mentioned. So watch when you buy too. Also, many if not most have a chip inside them to say they're out of ink before they actually are. They have to declare how much ink is in a cartridge but not how much you can actually use. On my Epson, there's a little reset switch. It gave me the message that it was out of ink. I pushed the reset and looky here, all of a sudden there's ink in there again! How it works varies from printer to printer but usually look around the electrical connection and there might be the little spot to poke a paper clip. The maddening part is that it has to cost more to put the electronics in there than it costs for the ink but they keep you buying it....See MoreFrustrating printer error
Comments (26)Thanks, team! :-) I tried the update this morning, and it didn't do anything. But I think Dees may be onto something. I remember when I moved the printer a bit to get at the connections in back, it made a jerky "on and off" type sound that I think would be compatible with a loose connection. I tried to check the printer-computer connection this morning, but didn't succeed very well. In the process I managed to disconnect one of my monitors, but somehow restored it. With two monitors, the laser printer, my big photo printer, the flatbed photo scanner, and three speakers (yes, I have a long desk--it also holds my ham radio), a lot of wires are plugged into that computer. I'll ask my son--who plugged them all in--to check the connection for me....See Morejrb451
