Printer suggestions?

I'm looking for a new 3-in-1 machine. I don't need fax capabilities and want something that's not too terribly clunky and large. I'd like to spend less than $150 if possible but in my research it seems like my options are growing more and more limited in that price point.

Right now I'm using a 4-in-1 HP that I hate. LOL Pet peeves with this machine include size, speed, and the fact that I can't print anything unless the color ink cartridge is full, too. I've found that is standard operating procedure with LexMark printers, unfortunately, which otherwise would be very attractive because of price. I can't stand the wastefulness of the machine automatically defaulting to all color instead of just black ink, which is what my machine does unless I change it every time I print.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm using a Mac PowerBook G4, although almost all printers I've come across work on both platforms.

Well the Canon linked below came third in the consumer reports linked below. All around it were $200+ printers so it seems a nice find perhaps.

I currently have a Canon Pixma 210 connected to my wife's machine and we are happy with that. I have owned other Canon printers with satisfaction too although my current printer only is an HP

The November 2008 issue of Consumer Reports rated six all-in-one printers. The top four were all Canon Pixma models, the fifth was an Epson, and the sixth was a HP. Actually, all six performed rather well. The first Canon, as well as the Epson and the HP, had fax capabilities.

#2 Canon Pixma MP970 list price $300
#3 Canon Pixma MP610 list price $180
#4 Canon Pixma MP520 list price $150.

I have a really old Canon color printer (SD530D), but since I rarely have a need for color, it's just sitting here just in case. Since it was also rather slow, I got a Brother laser to do my printing.

Making a copy does not require the computer so that is not much help really. Have you tried disconnecting the USB from the printer while it is on? There should be a 2 tone sound as this is done, plugging it back in the 2 tone sound is reversed. If there is no sound (assuming the speakers on of course) then either the cable is damaged or the printer might be shot. The link below leads to a 90 second video on how to print the test page without using the computer, have you tried that? This will tell you if the printer is actually working indicating that perhaps the cord is damaged. Here is a link that might be useful: Print self test page

I had to go back and read the steps that I recommended :-) Do you still have print jobs waiting to be printed or have you cleared that out? If you didn't clear it, you may need to do that. Did you remove the print cartridge when you cleared the paper jam? If not, I suggest turning the printer off, removing the cartridge, checking carefully for any bits of paper left inside the printer and turning the printer back on. We'd like to see a message from the printer advising that the cartridge is missing. Now turn it off and replace the cartridge. The purpose of this is to break the paper feed/no print cycle that your printer seems to be stuck in. My hope is that when you turn the printer back on, the current print job will complete. If that doesn't happen, go ahead and cancel the job. Try printing afterward selectively just to complete the 20 page cycle that was in progress. Pam

Transfering images to fabric

Laser printers won't work...the ink will wash away. I'm not sure about copiers. You might call a Kinkos type shop and ask if they can print on an inkjet. Another suggestion might be to print out your character. Then using a light box or similar set up transfer the outside lines of the characters to light colored fabric using pigma pens. Fill in using fabric paint and something called textile extender (or glaze, maybe). This will make the paint easier to use and less stiff when dry.

I have two Cannon Pixmas - 500 & 600 . Love these machines, but they are fairly large. The both have two paper feeders which I couldn't live without.
