Transfering images to fabric

OK...need some help here. I want to make a label for the quilt I'm sending to China. I want to include some Chinese, but I'm not able to write those characters legibly. haha I have access to the words that I need in graphic form, but I don't have an inkjet printer. Any suggestions on how I could transfer to fabric?

Can you use laser printers or copiers to transfer to iron ons?

Laser printers won't work...the ink will wash away. I'm not sure about copiers.

You might call a Kinkos type shop and ask if they can print on an inkjet.

Another suggestion might be to print out your character. Then using a light box or similar set up transfer the outside lines of the characters to light colored fabric using pigma pens. Fill in using fabric paint and something called textile extender (or glaze, maybe). This will make the paint easier to use and less stiff when dry.

I was also thinking you could use the light box to transfer the image. Does anyone you know have an ink jet that you could use? The other thing we could try, if you want to email me the image I have some iron on transfer paper here. I can print it out for you and then mail it back, shouldn't take too long to get to you. We'd just have to make sure my computer can "read" the Chinese characters (or perhaps just fax it over). --Amy

You can always call Kinko's and ask. If the area you want to copy is larger than 11x17 it could be pretty pricy for color. I think Red Confetti has the best idea. Hang the fabric flat against a wall and shoot as straight on as possible to minimize the distortion. Shoot at as high a resolution as possible. If you want the placemats larger than you can print at home, Kinko's can print the digital files for you. Call them for details of file type and resolution that will give the best result with the equipment they have.

Basically you pay for the file size(s) you need to send and nothing more. You can use Swap it! They have a free service too called Swap it! Encrypt it! Lite. I hope this helped a little, I know itÃ¯Â¿Â½s a real pain in the ass when you have to pay a ton to move lots of files. hello desertsteph, if you are talking about directly to a tile, i'm not too sure. i suspect there's another way to do that. but if you want to consider the most basic way... that is do the tranfer like in the tutorial then glue it onto the tile, it should not be a problem. however the glue should be compatible to both transfer and tile. just do one and try it :) it's always exciting to try out new things and the process of discovery that goes with it would be invaluable :)) hugs! luthien :)

XYLENE IS POISON. It also is sometimes found in natural gas at low concentration. To give you an idea of how poisonous: Dirt near a gas well is hauled away as hazardous waste if it contains 25 parts per million of xylene. If you can smell it, you are at risk. The stuff is tough on the liver at high doses, and carcinogenic at low doses. Stay safe. Buy the transfer paper or use an iron.

I'll ask around about the ink jet. I know my Mom has one, but she's 2 hrs away & if I want to wait that long, I'll be heading up there in 2 weeks. If I can't find anyone...I'll let you know Amy. The characters are in jpg format so they should work in anyone's computer. I just need to design my label & figure out what I'm going to do. Also need to figure out if I have transfer paper. Not sure where anything is right now with the office craft room rearranged.

CraftyDee, did you get the email I sent you through GW? DH would be happy to write the characters on the label for you, if you would like them hand-written. (The Chinese have developed a system of simplified characters that in some cases are quite a change from the originals, but he should still be able to copy them and make it look right.)

Biwako, no I didn't get the e-mail. I think GW is having problems with e-mail again. I will keep your offer in mind. Once I design my label & decide if I want it printer transfered....or done by hand. Thank you so much for your offer!

I cannot seem to keep inkjets around long. They die on me w/in a year & it takes a gonga deal for me to want to buy another.
