Large File transfer - what is the best way?

Hey all!

First off, thanks so much for all the help on the last question. Now I have another.....

If I want to send a large image file to someone, what is the best method to transfer it quickly? For example, copies of mechanical drawings that are in TIF format.

If I try to send it as an attachment to an email, I get message rejected due to file size. I am considering WinZip to compress the files, but I am not sure just how much compression I would get and if the file would go through. WOuld I be better off looking into setting up an FTP site?

Well - I tried a "low tech" version. I scanned the docs into separate TIF flies and sent each one as a separate email, but I thought there has to be a way for me to move the data from my computer to the client computer as a single unit. When I split the file into separate units, I often end up with 10 or 12 emails to send 1 set of drawings.

I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. Hope not.

Welcome Cdo and Doug, You pretty much have it. Once you have your pattern, using graphite works well. Use white graphite if transferring onto something dark and dark graphite for everything else. I actually like my graphite best when it is well used so the lines transfer lighter. Graphite lines are easy to remove also. The only time I use carbon paper is to transfer a pattern to a wood piece that I am going to cut out. Carbon paper lines are much harder to remove and often show if you try to paint over them. I only use it on the cutting lines. One neat trick I discovered for fabric like muslin is that if you make a photocopy (make sure you read the copyright statement for your pattern), then you can just iron it onto the fabric. Just have to be careful if there are words--so they won't be transferred backwards! So tell us more about yourself and the kind of projects you like to paint. Also, we just love to see pictures. Luvs

I have a desktop Windows-based pc, as well as an iPad and iPhone. I can transfer photos from the iPad and iPhone to my computer simply by connecting the iPad and/or iPhone to the computer with a USB cord. Well, to clarify, the end that goes into the iPad and iPhone has a Lightning connector, and the end that connects to the computer has a regular USB connector. Once the device is connected, I get a popup window on my pc saying that a new device has been detected, and asking me what I want to do. I click on the choice to explore files on the device. Then I navigate to the folders with the photos, and do the copy/paste thing (there are several different ways to do that, but you should be familiar with them). I don't do "move" because if anything hiccups (such as a power outage, etc.), I don't want to lose the photos. Once they've been copied to the desired destination, I can delete them from the iPad/iPhone. Easy peasy.

I suspect you will need to make a large washer to make them compatible. I bet the nut from the old shade must be just too small to work. I would trace it on something thin you can cut- stiff shirt cardboard or a plastic like an old credit card. Cut it out with scissors good enough and it won’t show.

myself I use droopy a file transfer program that allows you to set a special area and address to let other people come in and grab larger files

if you can change out from the tif file type to something like jpg or gif those would be smaller also.

Thanks everyone.

I had a friend tell me about a site called senduit and I think I am going to give that a try, but I appreciate everyones help and suggestions. I wll keep them all just in case.

senduit is the same type thing it however does have a 100MB limit and a time limit to get the file. Depending on the size of the file you may have to try various ones as they have differences in size limits and times.

Try Swap it! Encrypt it!
ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s the fastest and cheapest way to send large files.
They offer a no membership based service. Basically you pay for the file size(s) you need to send and nothing more. You can use Swap it! Encrypt it! to send files fast between computers or mobile (iPhone, BlackBerry etcÃ¯Â¿Â½) devices (you can even send files directly from your mobile device). They have a free service too called Swap it! Encrypt it! Lite.

I hope this helped a little, I know itÃ¯Â¿Â½s a real pain in the ass when you have to pay a ton to move lots of files.

FTP is too complex and time consuming to set up. Use Binfer instead. AFAIK, Binfer is the only service that can transfer large files directly from computer to computer without having to upload first.

how interesting bring up an old old post, sign up for a 10 minute throw away email address to use here, then suggest the use of a peer to peer program for file sharing.
