Plans for New Years eve?

We'll be home as usual--may be awake for the dropping of the ball. Will probably have snacks to eat.

How about you?

Probably the usual: we will make a nice dinner for the three of us. DH will go to bed by 9. I’ll stay up and watch movies, and around 11:45 DS will come in, we will make cranberry spritzers, watch the Chicago ball drop, and toast the New Year. It won’t be too cold this weekend, so DH and I will probably go for a walk somewhere.

Ditto Annie and Jas, bury/unbury money.

Prosecco and sparkling cider for toasting, at HOME. I'm expecting a fantastic 2022. I think it's the downhill side. Might even get to go back to campus to work. 🤞🏻

I learned if it has the skin to start in cold water. Skinless may be lowered into simmering water. With or without white wine (dry vermouth works - I only use 10-20%). I do like 3-4 springs of parsley added. But no onion or celery to interfere with the flavor. Lifting it out intact if you don't have a poacher is a challenge. If it threatens to break try for halves that can be placed together on the serving platter. Thin lemon slices can camouflage breaks plus fresh parsley.

What Are You Doing For New Year's Eve?

We'll go out for an early dinner of Mexican food, maybe with friends (and with or without their children), maybe not. New Years Day I cook prime rib for just the two of us...tradition these days. I never again plan to sit around New Years Day sleepless, with a headache from the night before trying to be interested in football, have outgrown that for good :) For many consecutive years we went to the same party at the same club. Finger foods only, lots of alcohol and a band....while we aren't the types to sit on differences and peeves to let them out (publicly) all at once, it was surprising how often friends did just that, and New Years Eve got so it could almost be counted on to be 'fight night' with one couple or another. No thanks, no drama, no more :)

My dentist is always reachable (or has coverage)--I've even called late Saturday night. I'd give him a call today, and see what he recommends to get you through the weekend. And having given him a 'heads up', maybe he'll try to squeeze you in on Monday (maybe offer to let you run in first thing, before his other appts?--you never know). Good luck. Awful time to have something like that happen, I know.

Enjoy a nice surf and turf dinner and watch the college football playoff games until I fall asleep. I haven't seen midnight in years unless we are at the lake cabin and even then it's rare.

Since I'm never in bed before midnight, NYEve is a non-event. I watch Anderson Cooper on CNN and read a book. Years ago we'd always trek to a friend's house and had a lovely time until she got cancer and died. Some years we dressed up and had a fancy dinner in the city. I'd rather have a cat on my lap and a glass of wine now that I'm a fuddy-duddy.

I plan to stay home in the front of a fire eating some lovely seafood and other assorted things. I'm particularly looking forward to the spinach pie as it is a favourite of mine.

I will also try my very first edible. I was supposed to try it on Christmas but didn't have time to go buy it..

I haven't touched any of of that kind of product since college days. I guess I am having my second college days.

I'm hoping it is relaxing for me. At least there was some of that when I was in college.

yeonassky - I hope the edible helps you relax! I think it will. I went over to a friend's yesterday and we made a batch of infused oil with the machine we recently purchased and then made a batch of gummies with the infused oil. I've only made infused butter in the past and then made cookies with that. Yes, we both have our medical MJ cards.

We've been watching an hour of "Lost in Space", the Netflix version every night. I don't plan on varying from the routine. :0) I'll be asleep before the ball drops.

We go to a friends house every year with lots of food, alcohol and games. We watch all the balls drop from different time zones. We always have a really fun time and I look forward to it.

We have parties we could go to at 3 different clubs (one formal, 2 casual) , but I don't want to be out late then have to get up early to pick up my grands, especially the morning after a party. So Thursday morning I'm picking up the grands and taking them to camp for a long weekend. Hubby is already up there. NYE we plan on taking them glow bowling then in the evening my BIL, his GF, and my SIL are coming to celebrate. I got horns and hats for the kids. We will have sourkraut, kielbasa, crusty rolls, potatoes, junk food, and liquid refreshments. Silver dollars out on the windowsill before midnight and brought back in the next day. At midnight we will head outside and bang pot, set off firecrackers and maybe shoot off some rounds.

We haven't joined the party - ers in many years. We used to go to the same club with the same group of old friends each year. Good company, lively atmosphere, dancing, and....NO FOOD other than nuts and chips. I watched way too many football games with a headache New Years Day to want to continue ;) BC (before Covid) we had begun having an early dinner with friends, sometimes including their children/grandchildren. Home early, and not necessarily staying up until the ball drops. The last couple of years its just been us at home, some snacks on hand throughout the afternoon and early evening for drop in friends or family making garage visits. We've done take-out Mexican, but we have so much snow and ice here this week, I may cook something simple.

We have traditionally had prime rib on New Years Day, for many years it would be the first time we were not in a crowd of family and friends - we tried to reserve that day for the two of us. I've bought one, plans are to cook it New Years Day but the two of us eating in the kitchen is certainly not new in the last two years ;)

    we are Home Sweet Home!

DH & I haven't gone out since before our children were born, it is such nonevent for me, at least. he's fine to 'go along with the program'

we both usuallly fall asleep, wake up to see the ball drop, text with the kids, then go to bed. Perfect :)

we usually go out NY day for late lunch/early dinner, but with COVID/Omicron, we will likely stay home,

New Years Eve day is my early riding lesson so afterwards I will come home and take a nap. Then I will be be up in the evening. DH will go to bed his usual time. Since fireworks are outlawed around here, people use every opportunity to set them off, not just 4th of July. So maybe I'll watching the skies for the light show if it doesn't rain. Once that settles down I will try to get a few hours rest before our welcome the new year long morning ride. Happy New Year!

I never go out NYE. I'm usually sound asleep long before the clock strikes 12. I do however, make a batch of Oliebollen every year and pig out on them. You haven't lived if you haven't ever tired one. It's a Dutch tradition.

I hope to be in bed, shortly after dark, and asleep when the New Year rolls in. When we lived on the bayou, people around us set off firecrackers....but folks around here are pretty quiet.

I lost my husband in June. We always celebrated New Years Eve with an expensive champagne (which he always bough) and watched Anderson Cooper on TV. I still have the photos on my phone from last NYE. We were so happy, and thought the new year would be much better than the last. Now he's gone.

My daughter and her family have come down for Christmas but she has to leave NYE. She won't be here to ring in the new year. Her husband and my other granddaughter will stay until Sunday. They drove down from Ct. so I could meet their new dog. They will drive back on Monday.

Not sure I want to celebrate anything. I certainly do not look forward to it. Christmas was rough but being with my daughter and granddaughters made me happy. Not sure what I will do. I guess I should cook something but my heart isn't in it.

I just want these holidays over. Its been so depressing, so many memories.

Oh, Jane, I'm sorry to see the "should" word in your post. This is no time to impose burdens on yourself. If you feel like cooking, great. If you don't, that's what take-out is for.

Holidays are hard. I'm glad your son-in-law and granddaughter will be with you for this one. After that, perhaps you can find something helpful in this blog post I wrote several years ago.

    Advice to the Grieving

Hoping for a better year for us all.

:(( Virtual Hugs)) to you @jane__ny.

I have always had a love hate relationship with NYE . I always felt "pressure" to do something and would feel a bit disappointed that we weren't doing anything grand. Truth is I really don't enjoy being out on NYE unless it's down the street and walkable.

We used to go out early ( like really early ) with another couple and head home before 7. Since we moved, I think maybe one year we babysat but mostly we don't do anything. I usually fall asleep before midnight.

I will enjoy being a Homebody!

Yes, our annual family cookout. I will probably be home in bed by 8:30. We have done this for close to 40 years. I will be taking potato salad, deviled eggs and baked beans.

So thankful to have a party to go to, it's such a joy to spend time with friends and another plus is we usually get to meet some new people at this friends house. We enjoyed all the Christmas parties we attended and held. So glad to be back to normal routines again.

Homebody, as usual. Snacks and maybe even a second beer -- wild night, for me ;-)

We'll be staying home. Too much Covid spreading like wildfire and clogging up the hospitals.

@yeonassky Make sure you don't take a full dose for your first one! I made that mistake and spent 3 hours thinking I was having a stroke. It was scary! My face went numb and I felt like I was choking. The next time I took 1/4 of the normal one and it was fine and relaxing. :)

Jane, maybe order some nice Champagne after all ? Honor the tradition and all that? Just a thought.

Fondue bourguignonne (shrimp, filet mignon, cooked in oil with various sauces and cruditées on the side) followed by chocolate soufflé for us on NYE. Pink Champagne this year.

The boys were supposed to have a few guests, but you can guess what happened to that plan, Hello, Omicron.

Jane, I'm sorry. I understand, having lost my husband in March. Even though we didn't celebrate the New Year, it was comforting to have him with me.

Yeonassky, I think I wrote here one time about making "edibles". I got the "recipe" from a hippie I knew. I made them according to his instructions....cooking down shade leaves with butter and using the butter to make brownies. He told me to use a pound dried weight of shade leaves....those are the big leaves without much thc. He was probably estimating. I used a whole pound. I thought surely mine wouldn't be anywhere near as strong as the ones he made. I made mine in miniature muffin cups, and added walnuts, cherries and pineapple, so they were like little miniature fruitcakes. I ate two of them....mainly checking for the taste....there couldn't have been more than a tsp of batter in each one. I was in a catatonic state for 24 hours! After that the smell of them made me feel sick. Jody gave them to a friend....with a warning...and he loved them.

Even if I wasn't planning to spend NYeve at home, no way would I venture out. Yesterday's covid cases were the highest ever in the almost two-year pandemic and my friend just called and said her daughter ,husband, and kids, all vaccinated and boosted just got back from NYC all with raging covid sickness.

I sure hope you'all are NOT discussing making/using illegal drugs!!! If so you should remove your post, this isn't the place to discuss any plans to break laws.

    strip poker

Raye, it's legal in 39 states for heaven's sakes.

Icy, slick as snot streets, drunks and Omicron running rampant through the country.........no thanks, I'm staying home. A couple of gasses of wine, scampi with linguini and peppermint bark gelato. Sounds like a decent evening to me!!

Recreational use is only 18 states.

We bought a huge bottle of Prosecco yesterday at Trader Joe's, and so we plan to drink some of that on NYE. I've been staying up until just past midnight lately, but Kevin does not, and so I doubt he'll stay up on NYE either.

Yesterday we watched a movie that I had bought on DVD, Reality Bites, which I bought (I think) because it was filmed a block west of the Fourth Ward in Houston, which is a neighborhood that I am very familiar with, although it is about a mile north of where I used to live in Houston, which was in the Montrose District. Anyway, the buildings in the movie were familiar to me. I might have bought it because it has Winona Ryder in it, and I knew her when she was a child.

I haven't bought any other movies to watch for NYE.

"Recreational use is only 18 states."

Face reality. Recreational use is common in 50 states and has been for many, many decades. So long as commercial dealing isn't involved and for people who don't drive under the influence, personal cannabis use is rarely a matter of concern for most police forces. In places where it isn't freely permitted but medical use is, you can get a medical use card for $45 by telling a doc who does such work that you periodically have back pain and nothing works to relieve it. That's all that's needed.

It's hypocritical that the wanna-be moralizers who have spoken up are those who have in the past complained about what they think are laws or programs that suggest we have vestiges of having a "nanny state". You can't have it both ways.

Let's hypothetically pick one thing to legalize and one to ban from this list of two - guns and cannabis use. Let's ban the one that's more dangerous to the largest number of people. You all know what the outcome would be.

And still illegal by federal law, this is NOT the forum to discuss this. Just the mention of it could cost someone their job, take them out of running for a job, a position within a church, childcare or other social organizations and be used against someone in court.

    last modified: 4 years ago

Oh please! Get over it!! Discussions about growing, consuming and cooking with cannabis abound on these forums and have for years. As well as countless discussions on the benefits of CBD oils and lotions.

And as most members are too intelligent to use their actual names as screen names, the idea of prosecution (virtually nonexistent at the Federal level unless large scale dealing) is pretty darn remote, as is that information being divulged elsewhere.

Recreational marijuana is legal in my state and I am not the slightest bit shy about stating I enjoy it frequently.

    Always in moderation I say!

    Amazing.

I think it's fair to say that any federal laws about personal, responsible use of cannabis haven't been enforced for ages. I can't imagine any federal agency cares about it a stitch. Witch hunts had gone out of fashion by the 1700s so there's no risk of that.

I'm all for drug testing those whose jobs could potentially endanger others. As for anything else and anyone else, adult behavior is adult behavior. The authorities know better than to waste time with victimless crimes.

I really don't care who uses weed. I enjoy a few spirited drinks myself sometimes . I tried weed 3 times. Never did like it. But it is illegal in my state for recreational use. Our largest employer in Pittsburgh is hospital systems. The one I worked for which was the largest did test all newly hired under probation for drugs. If you tested positive you no longer had a job. I knew several. Also if you were arrested, cited or suspected for using after your probation period it was either go to drug rehab or be fired. The VA didn't test newly hired, but if caught the same thing happened. There is many companies that test. My son is in IT and all three companies he worked for tested. It is very common for employers to test in our area, some do it routinely.

It's going to be a quiet night for self and hubby. Omicron cases in Oz are skyrocketing, our town is filled with tourists, some of whom are probably contagious, and the temperature now, at 10 AM is 33C (91F). We're hunkering down for the duration 😎

"...So glad to be back to normal routines again." Raye Smith.

Thank goodness most people posting are referencing the spike in Covid/Omicron. I'm dying to know where people are back to normal routines.

"Just the mention of it could cost someone their job, take them out of running for a job, a position within a church, childcare or other social organizations and be used against someone in court."

Well, then that person is stupid. If using weed can do all that, the person who does is really, really dumb. People who use it illegally know it can possibly cost them their job, take them out of running for a job, etc. If they choose to do so anyway, then they're s-t-u-p-i-d and have no one to blame but themselves.

Edibles have been a godsend for my anxiety because I don't like smoking of any type. I just take a quarter of one and it helps relax me for hours. I understand why some jobs need to test for it for safety but I'm not worried about that as my company is in California and nothing we do can remotely injure anyone else. Weed is a lot safer than alcohol, both for health and overdose risk.

I have never tried it, having watched my friends in high school smoke and act dumb, it certainly held no appeal to me. I do not drink either, not only because I find the taste of alcohol vile but I do not like the effects of it either. The "buzz" or whatever i got once off of alcohol made me extremely anxious and uncomfortable. I like to be aware and present at all times.

However, as long as one is safe and conscious of the safety of others, I mind my own business, make my own choices and leave others to theirs.

It is legal here to buy such things in legal shops here in BC.

Thank you for everyone's reminders not to overdo it. All went well with the purchasing and I only plan to take one or two bites.

I think it is worth the chance as one of my friends has had good success with relieving some of the tension. Again she does not do it regularly and nor will I.

it's an interesting issue: which is worse, indulging in a bit of pot, or ignoring public health advice, or even regulations, about Covid?. Seems to me a lot of the law and order crowd aren't all that keen on observing rules that affect them..

Friday night has been Skype with my 87 year old mom night for about 18 months now and that's what I'll be doing tonight. I'm working today (leaving the house shortly) then when I come home, I'll change clothes then go get my booster shot. Come home, grab a bite to eat, talk to mom on Skype then make the traditional Dutch Oliebollen for NYE

Today we're making sure we have just staples in the house. No big plans other than tolerating the inevitable fireworks from pyromaniac neighbors. (ANY excuse is enough.) Chicago will have four to eight inches of snow, falling all day on January 1. At least no high winds are predicted, so electricity should not be a problem. The last time the city had a big snowfall on New Years Day was 1918 -- note the 'connection'?

We won't see our kids until at least a week after anti-vaxer relative and family have left town. Hoping they haven't reinfected our newly recovered family. I have to be cautious due to my compromised immune system with multiple myeloma treatment.

I'm guessing we'll have a break from the plague by March. Local hospitals are full up now, and the post-Christmas infections are continuing to stress although Illinois is in better shape than neighboring states and New England.

Wishing all my KT friends a Happy New Year!
