We cannot make plans to go out somewhere because we MIGHT have out of town company. My mother-in-law called 2 weeks ago saying she and her companion are coming to Houston. She never gives an arrival date (they drive from Florida and stop at a casino en-route). So they can show up anywhere from the 30th till the 1st. Personally, I find it rude...I have rooms to prepare (3 "adult" sons living at home, so it can get a bit untidy)and food to purchase and prepare, but she NEVER seems to "get that" since she tells my DH to tell me (she calls her son but rarely talks to me on the phone)not to fuss. She has given me a great lesson in life, and that is how NOT to be a mother-in-law, and seeing that potentially I could have 3 DIL's that lesson is valuable!

Staying safely at home!

We don't usually do anything but this year decided to join some friends at our club for New Years Eve.

Same as Kayjones, staying safely at home. I will volunteer to watch Finn if his parents want to go out but they are homebodies. They had 19 years of marriage before they became parents.

Wow--I'll bet that's an interesting story! My DH and I were married 8 years before we had a baby, and I thought that was a long time.

Oh, right--New Years. :-) I think I'm staying safely home, too.

Maybe going to our local cafe as they are having a special dinner (supper). No cooking for me. Others going also.

Idea for Hustonmom: When MIL shows up without notice, do what she said: Don't make a fuss. Hand her a list of local motels (with phone numbers) and recommend which one might best suit her needs.

Absolutely nothing, which we like.

We usually go to the Candler Hills restaurant which is here within our little community. They have a fabulous menu for holidays. Then we come home and watch the ball go down in Times Square while we sip Baileys. (If we stay awake.) We still have Baileys in the garage frig from last year. :-)

Jemdandy, the Rose Parade and game are Jan. 2 this year.
Alisande, they tried for 6 1/2 years to adopt, had many failed adoptions before they got this precious newborn in 2010. Parents are 44 and 43 now.

Houstonmom, I'd suggest that you just go ahead and make whatever plans you choose, and let the folks know your plans. There's no reason for you to have to make or not make plans subject to their open-ended plans.

Me? At this point, I'm expecting a nice, cozy, warm evening at home with those I love the best.

I think the last time I "did anything" was in high school
which meant a midnight movie
Just stay at home out of the traffic watch the house so no one shoots any fireworks around it etc then at midnight my time I go out in front and "rattle the pans"

no plans which is pretty normal for us we rarely do anything special for New Years, may go out somewhere for dinner but I will definitely make a pot of blackeyes and some cabbage for us to have for sure. We need that health and wealth!!
Probably tv, movie or just reading our ebooks. Safe and comfy!

Just want to mention when growing up Mom would fix a new Years Day dinner ofbaked ham and fixings.I dont remember anythin excepting Rattling the pans the night before I think my older brother and sisters went out on NYE

Prime Rib with King Crab legs, movies and a bottle of wine. That's it! Another exciting year!! LOL!! Sometimes we have friends that come in and sometimes not, so far this year no one but the two of us and the 6 1/2 cats.

I call my Mom at midnight for Happy New Year. (She's 88)

Nothing going on here, but will have some of my Black eyed pea soup which is waiting in the freezer. Might make some broccoli cornbread to go with it.

home alone as always..we have never liked to drive that night...we each have our own bottle of non al bubbly or have made our own champagne, white grape juice and ginger ale...it's pretty good...

Probably nothing. Have to work early the next day.

I'll be baby sitting for my daughter and son in law. They are coming for the weekend... since her dad is getting married. I offered to watch the kiddos... which gives me extra time with them.

Flying from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, getting in at 7:30. Attending the Rose Bowl on January 2nd, and will see my son march with the drumline for the second year in a row. Go Badgers, On Wisconsin (let's win this time!!!)

Sleeperblues, your plans sound like something I'd thoroughly enjoy! Grew up in Long Beach and Daddy would never take us to the Rose Parade or Rose Bowl.

Chances are I'll be staying at home this Saturday...ok by me. Will be lucky if I'm awake at midnight. :)

We'll go out for an early dinner of Mexican food, maybe with friends (and with or without their children), maybe not. New Years Day I cook prime rib for just the two of us...tradition these days. I never again plan to sit around New Years Day sleepless, with a headache from the night before trying to be interested in football, have outgrown that for good :)

For many consecutive years we went to the same party at the same club. Finger foods only, lots of alcohol and a band....while we aren't the types to sit on differences and peeves to let them out (publicly) all at once, it was surprising how often friends did just that, and New Years Eve got so it could almost be counted on to be 'fight night' with one couple or another. No thanks, no drama, no more :)

We plan on going to a friend's for barbeque and heading home early. We usually stay out till midnight... but doubt we will this year.
