Kindle e-Reader Question(s)

DH has a Paperwhite that I got him several years ago. He loves it but has recently said that he'd like to have a Paperwhite with WiFi and cellular connectivity. Well, I am not finding that those exist, at least not new ones.

My bit of research has shown me Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage. I've read the pros and cons, but, frankly, I don't like his Paperwhite (I have a Fire). I can't stand the way the pages briefly blink when turning them (he doesn't notice it). So, I'm not sure that I can be a proper judge of what to buy him.

Yes, of course I could ask him. But I'd like it to be something under the tree that he opens without knowing what it is first.

Do any of you have any of the above? He did specify "Paperwhite with WiFi and cellular connectivity" but I think that that's because he has a Paperwhite and perhaps doesn't know about the Oasis or Voyage and thinks that what he wants does exist.

Any thoughts? Advice? Can anyone correct me and tell me that I can, in fact, get exactly what he wants, brand new?

I have two Kindle Paperwhites with WiFi and cellular connectivity. Hubs has one with Wifi and cellular, and one with only WiFi. Unfortunately, as has been pointed out, above, the cellular connectivity on new devices is now only available on the Kindle Oasis. The Oasis is significantly more expensive ($250) than the "regular" Paperwhite ($140).

Yes, @aok27502, you can download the free Kindle app on many devices -- I have it on my desktop computer (running Windows 10), as well as on my iPad Air and iPhone. But, a big advantage to reading on an actual Kindle device is the absence of glare on the screen. The built-in front lighting is great for reading in a dark room (e.g., in bed while your spouse is trying to sleep). And Kindles are very light weight.

@Suzieque you might be able to find an earlier generation Paperwhite with WiFi and cellular on Amazon.

What about a tablet with the Kindle app? I have a Samsung galaxy tablet, it does almost everything I did on my laptop, and I like the Kindle app just fine. I'm not sure what features the Paperwhite might have that may be lacking.

Download the free (and very reputable) Calibre program and then you can get the library books in ePUB format and convert them to Kindle (.azw) format. Pam_25f -- I don't know why Windows Player is entering into this at all. Download the Kindle book to your computer, and make note of where you've saved it. It's easiest if you create a folder and name it "Kindle downloads" or something like that. Connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable that came with the Kindle. Now, open "My Computer" and go to the folder where you downloaded the Kindle book. Now, do the "copy/paste" thing to copy it to the "Documents" folder on your Kindle. Disconnect your Kindle from the computer, and you'll have the book on it, available to read.

I name mine my Pandigital is ANDI for obvious reasons. My sylvania is sylvia. My lookbook is I can not reacall if I named it or not but my husband has one exactly like it so I have put a pink band around the cover so we can spot the difference easily. In some of the post on computer help others have mentioned the names for theirs. My friend named her Kindle Ken. by the way anyone with Kindles I was just at Tuesday Morning and they had some fabulous deals on leather covers I bought one in hot pink for $14 I am giving it to my sister for hers. Unfortunately none they had would fit my sylvania which is the only one I have that would need one. They also had the type that actually hook in to the side of the Kindle like the original ones did. I have a Kindle and also use the Kindle App on my iPad and I seldom look at the time remaining. But I wonder if it recalculates the time every time you turn it off and then back on again . The navigation on my car estimates the time remaining to my destination - but it changes depending on the speed of my car. Is it possible that you were reading a little slower the second time or stopped to answer the phone or something? I'll have to look my mine the next time. And to be really scientific I could open both my Kindle and iPad and check the time on both of them......lol Maire

All Kindle Paperwhites have WiFi connectivity. Kindle Oasis also has cellular connectivity. Go to this link and scroll down to find a chart with information about all Kindles.

I wonder why your husband wants something with cell phone connectivity. Most internet providers offer free access to Wifi hotspots in public places and residential neighborhoods. There are thousands (probably tens of thousands) of such access points and they're all over the place.

The different ISPs share their access to customers of other companies. Take a look at this map for an example of where these hotspots are

Thanks, all. (Elmer, I posted the same question in the Computer Forum separately because it didn't give me the option to also post there when I scrolled through other forums to post to. Not sure if that makes sense. So I just copied and pasted with the intention of checking both forums.).

I've no idea why he wants cellular connectivity. He's pretty tech savvy and we know where hot spots are and can also create our own. (Regarding Wifi in public places, of course those are not secure). I just want to get him what he wants and am trying to get as close to it as possible.

I guess it'll probably be the Oasis thay's closest. I'll take a closer look, and I thank you all for taking the time to respond.

I am pretty sure my paperwhite has Wi-Fi. it's the waterproof one. Its less than a year old. not sure which one it is

Security shouldn't be a concern for downloading E-books but maybe he's using it to access the internet for general use? I believe any Wifi RF connection, even at home, is theoretically interceptable - only a wired connection fixes that, unless he's using VPN.

I bought the Oasis with WiFi and cellular connectivity. And it is ”free returns” if he decides he wants a different one. BUT! It wont arrive until the end of January. Oh well. My fault for procrastinating. I’ll put a picture of it on a box and wrap that.
