Which e-reader/small tablet will outlast the rest?

I just read about Apple already working on a smaller iPad to go on the market by the end of next year. (But everything about Apple is rumor, rumor, rumor...)

And while I was reading that, an ad for the Nook was on TV.

So I started to wonder: Between the big attention-grabbers -- Apple, Amazon's Kindle lineup and the Nook -- and the long list of other manufacturers, which do you think will eventually fallby the wayside?

(I know that the market audience for e-readers is not always the same as which shoppers specifically want tablets...)

If I were to guess, I think that while the Kindle will last (I LOVE mine), I don't think the Kindle Fire (tablet type reader) will.

The iPad will be around for a very long time.

I don't know about the Nook, as I think it will depend upond the health of Barnes and Noble as to whether B&N lasts as a company.

I agree with Ellen, I think the Kindle will be around for long time, Amazon has a lot invested in it. I'm not as sure about the Fire and I really wonder about the Nook. I love my Kindle.

I just got an iPad and so far it amazes me, but if all you are looking for a reader it is over kill. I think there will be room for many of the tablets for years to come, and I am confident that the iPad is in it for the longhaul. It seems that Apple does so much research before they release products and tho it is the reason many don't like Apple, I love the fact that they control not only the software but also the hardware.

I have two (one iPad and one Android)...each is fine. I like them because they take up little space, can do most anything a laptop can do, and I use them to download a number of magazines and newspapers I subscribe to. And they can be used as an e-reader for books (like a Kindle, etc.). Once downloaded, these documents are on the device, and I don't need an Internet connection to read them. However, I would imagine that any hospital these days will have wi-fi available. The only disadvantage I see is that they are a little slower to type on because you are typing on the touch screen. However, if this is a big deal, then you can get a cheap, compact keyboard that pairs with the device wirelessly (I just bought one for $20). As far as apps, the choices are endless, and often free...I've yet to pay for one. Most tablets have an icon to tap to take you to the "store" where you type in the sort of thing you are looking for and then you choose and download it. Some of the apps I like are: a weather app; a flight app that gives the realtime schedule for any flight in the world; a wi-fi locater showing where free wi-fi is available anywhere in the world based on my location; a dictation app so I don't have to type; game apps (Mahjong and crossword puzzles); music app to play digital music files; calendar, shopping list, and reminder apps; video player so I can watch Netflix movies; and several recipe apps with 10's of thousands of recipes available (I just put the tablet in a little stand in the kitchen). That's about 10% of what I have installed. If you are going to get one, I suggest a 10" screen as it makes reading books and magazines, as well as surfing the web more enjoyable. You also have to decide whether you are going to get one that has only wi-fi, which means it can only access the Internet when you are in range of a wi-fi router, or whether you are going to get a more expensive one that can also access a data plan from a cell phone company. With the latter, you are not dependent on finding an available wi-fi connection to surf, but you are paying probably $100 more for the capability, and you will need to pay monthly for a data plan like you would with a smartphone. I don't have a data plan for my tablets. I mainly use a tablet at home so it connects to my router, and at other places, like major airports, university buildings, public buildings, Starbucks, McDonalds, etc., there is usually free wi-fi. If I really need an internet connection when I am out and can't find a free one, I just use my smartphone. Lastly, you can use most tablets as cameras, and more expensive ones have two cameras built-in so that you can also make phone calls via Skype. Luckygardner--Threadwords was free. Try searching Amazon for free games (I know last Dec, I just found it searching through the free books). Alisande? Have you tried any of the free books? There are a gazillion classics--which I mean to read, but haven't gotten around to yet. But a lot of the free books by unfamiliar authors are actually VERY good. If you like mysteries with lots of twists and turns--try the Paul Pilkington book--it's almost always near the top of the free list, can't recall the title. A lot the other free books I've read (and it's been many dozen by now) are surprisingly well written--and there are every kind of book from mystery to romance to comedy to biography to other non-fiction, cookbooks, sample chapters--I literally have bought only about 5 e-books since getting mine. Yes, there have been a couple of clunkers, but a very very small percentage. I'd highly recommend giving a few of the free books a try. Read the reader reviews--I've found they're a pretty reliable source of info.

I loved, and I mean.. Loved, the Martha Stewart show. And I mean the actual show, that was on Primetime TV. I remember... it being transitioned over to "Hallmark" Channel... and, then... shortly canceled after that. Now... she has this god-awful segment on the "Today" show, which... I really don't care for anymore. I'll leave it at this... When I was younger, I was able to play with Huge Satellite dishes. The Feed shown to you by your Local NBC station... is drastically different, from the non-cut feed in NY. Some of those anchors... are just horrible. Do any of you hear about Martha Stewart now? It's rare. She has a product line at Macy's that hasn't been updated in a while. I think her JCPenney deal fell through. I just... don't understand what happened to poor Martha. I know a lot of people we're greatly intimidated by her. But still. I don't think she really put her "name" / brand on just anything. She really believed in quality stuff. And her show... Well. I think it took people away from there busy lives, for a few moments every day, and... reminded them, of what they could do. Inspiration, that's for sure. No. She wasn't perfect. We all aren't. But I think she believed in doing things the right way, and loved sharing knowledge. I remember, in one of her shows. She talked about Miele washers, AND.... she talked about Persil and Tide Powder. Although, she hated the scent of Tide Powder, and would only buy it, in free & gentle. She made a very big deal about the Persil though, and recommended people try using it for there whites. I *think* she might have mentioned, perwoll as well but I'm not too sure. I miss that show... :( And... I know it won't come back on the air. Nor, will anything like it.

I second Raven regarding using a tablet for e-reading. The tablet I use for reading is an ASUS Transformer and it is extremely light. I cannot find any documentation as to how much it weighs, but am convinced it weighs no more than a few ounces, not even close to 17 ounces. Another advantage to having reading aps on the tablet (including one for downloading books from the library), is that you also download other "entertainment aps" for your tablet. On mine, for entertainment purposes, I have three reading aps (including Kindle), Sudoku, several word games, crosswords which I download daily (Shortyz Crosswords is the ap which downloads crosswords from a number of daily newspapers), a solitaire game, etc. Yes, my entertainments are very old fashioned. In addition, have The Weather Chanel ap, Fitbit ap, a daily Bible reading ap - really there seem to be no limitations as to the aps that can be downloaded to Android tablets. My hands have never gotten tired with holding it, and I too have arthritis in my hands. That tablet has truly changed my life for the better. Personally, I will never have an e-reader that is only for the function of reading. Don't limit yourself. I will stop the ramble now.

I think Apple's ipad and the Kindle will be around for a long time, but in improved versions, of course. I'm not sure about the Nook.

I have an ipad and a (older) Kindle. The ipad is just amazing: it does so much so well. But I don't like to read on it too much as it is too heavy. Kindle is better for reading.

While the Fire has been popular this Christmas, the NY Times didn't give it a very good review. It's linked below and if you don't want to read the whole thing, just read the last paragraph. I'm sure Amazon will be improving it.

No, not shopping -- just thinking about how quickly technology advances in general and, more specifically, like how some companies darted into the e-reader/tablet market and now have pulled out either because they didn't bet on the "right" technology or couldn't reach the level of marketing that the biggies have.

(Kind of like how Betamax lost big time to VHS when videotapes were hot.)

I'm just amazed at the "e-reader" race -- Pandigital, Aluratek's Libre, Kobo, Samsung, Sony and so many other options out there angling for market share.

My brother has an Ipad. I've read on a Kindle. I can't imagine going smaller to read.... On DS's phone, you can get some free books. It would drive me crazy trying to read from something that small.!

My DD has noted that the iPad seems more durable than the others. She has seen a lot of cracked Kindles and other tablets - but never an iPad.

I have a Sony PRS-T1, 6" touch-screen, and I recently compared it to a friend's Kindle Fire. I like the Fire and all the things it can do, but it's much heavier in my little hands than my Sony. Since I don't have wi-fi in my house, all the stuff it could do would be kind of a waste for me. I'm liking my Sony just fine. :)

My old laptop is dying -- of broken HINGES. This makes me think about buying a tablet with a stand and keyboard/mouse.

I was hoping there would be a tablet light enough to use for reading books -- not yet, huh? I don't need or want cameras, etc.

Our $50 Lookbooks (Kobo) are still working fine, but they could be lighter weight. Which Kindel for me?

I think the question boils down to the Operating systems and in that aspect Android is here to stay and of course so is Apple. There are a multitude of various brands using the Android OS including the one on the Kindle fire but Amazon has altered it so it is much more exclusive to Amazon which narrows it's use over a regular Android tablet.

I have several Android tablets and just ordered myself a new one for Christmas it is an 8" because I think the 10" are just too heavy for my arthritis sore hands to hold.
Brands are just the names slapped on the outside of the tablet they are all pretty much the same if they are running Android just like our smartphones that are Android.

it has a much higher resolution than others and does a lot of other stuff and it does have a camera on board too not that I will use that much and I could use it to control all of my home theater since it also has an IR remote feature built in. I love technology so I know this surely will not be my last buy! I do pass on my older ones to people that can use them.

chisue my husband loves his Lookbook he is not in the least interested in any thing else!

the one recommendation I give everyone looking at any of the android tablets do not get anything lower than version 2.3 you want Android 2.3, 3.0 and up NOT 2.2 or lower.
If it does not say be sure you ask and find out for sure because they are trying to unload a lot of those older versions now at Christmas.
