question for e-reader folks

I guess this is the first time that I tried to get an e-book from Amazon, thought I'd done it before. I have a Pandigital; when I order the e-book, a free one, it asks for my Kindle number. What's the deal? Is there a way around it or what am I doing wrong. Thanks!

Amazon books are for Kindle readers. For books for Pandigital, go to Barnes and Noble. If you have Kindle for PC, you can download books from Amazon. But you must have some form of Kindle to get e-books from Amazon.

Barnes and Noble has lots of free books, too. The ones for their Nook reader are the ones that work on Pandigital.

yes Casi the pandigital takes the epub format it can not read the kindle format unless of course you have installed the kindle android app onto the pandigital.

anytime you get any book from amazon you have to use your amazon account so you have to be logged into your amazon account that is what it is asking for , even though the book is free it will go through the transaction just like you are buying it but the price will be zero, they will also email you to your associated email and provide the "bill" copy.

You can use a program like calibre to change the format from kindle to epub and use it that way. Many times barnes and noble have the same free books as amazon but they are already in epub format.

wait what does your phone have to do with it? You want it for your new tablet right? To add apps is super simple, go to the app store, one had to come on your tablet it may be getjar on that one not sure just do a search on the app store for the app or just browse through them for ones you might like to try, download and install from there if you don't like it you can remove it. You can get the kindle app from most app stores and also from amazon, you will need to install the amazon app store app first then you can use their app store but you do have to have an amazon account set up so you can log in. I recommend this guide to those new to android it really will help plus read the guide that is on your tablet for any specifics. The Complete Android Guide one thing you do need to do is go into settings,applications, and check mark to allow apps from other sources/unknown sources so you can get them from places other than the one app store on your tablet. How To Install Apps on Android eReaders and Tablets I am pretty sure it is getjar that comes on coby if so here is the link to the getjar store and the kindle app just go there using your tablet and hit the orange download button at the top for kindle it will then install to your tablet show you the progress and ask you if you want to accept say yes to all that then it will ask if you want to open it. The apps you use the most you can select to put on your front pages on your tablet so you don't have to scroll through all your apps to find them. Luckygardner--Threadwords was free. Try searching Amazon for free games (I know last Dec, I just found it searching through the free books). Alisande? Have you tried any of the free books? There are a gazillion classics--which I mean to read, but haven't gotten around to yet. But a lot of the free books by unfamiliar authors are actually VERY good. If you like mysteries with lots of twists and turns--try the Paul Pilkington book--it's almost always near the top of the free list, can't recall the title. A lot the other free books I've read (and it's been many dozen by now) are surprisingly well written--and there are every kind of book from mystery to romance to comedy to biography to other non-fiction, cookbooks, sample chapters--I literally have bought only about 5 e-books since getting mine. Yes, there have been a couple of clunkers, but a very very small percentage. I'd highly recommend giving a few of the free books a try. Read the reader reviews--I've found they're a pretty reliable source of info.

I think the question boils down to the Operating systems and in that aspect Android is here to stay and of course so is Apple. There are a multitude of various brands using the Android OS including the one on the Kindle fire but Amazon has altered it so it is much more exclusive to Amazon which narrows it's use over a regular Android tablet. I have several Android tablets and just ordered myself a new one for Christmas it is an 8" because I think the 10" are just too heavy for my arthritis sore hands to hold. Brands are just the names slapped on the outside of the tablet they are all pretty much the same if they are running Android just like our smartphones that are Android. This is my new toy VIZIO 8-Inch Tablet with WiFi - VTAB1008 it has a much higher resolution than others and does a lot of other stuff and it does have a camera on board too not that I will use that much and I could use it to control all of my home theater since it also has an IR remote feature built in. I love technology so I know this surely will not be my last buy! I do pass on my older ones to people that can use them. chisue my husband loves his Lookbook he is not in the least interested in any thing else! the one recommendation I give everyone looking at any of the android tablets do not get anything lower than version 2.3 you want Android 2.3, 3.0 and up NOT 2.2 or lower. If it does not say be sure you ask and find out for sure because they are trying to unload a lot of those older versions now at Christmas.

Yes, I use B & N for most of my books, but I did find a free one on Amazon that I wanted. How hard would that "calibre" thing for me to do? I have an Amazon acct., but it asked me for my Kindle number.

as to kindle number I don't know I have downloaded many books from amazon for my kindle for pc and it never asked for any kindle number, it did ask to which one I wanted to send it to since I have 3 computers with kindle for pc on them. You do have to have the kindle app on something so it can send it to that, either on your pc or pandigital or something it sends it to the actual unit where the app is.

If you have Kindled for PC Amazon knows it and does not ask for a number (cookie?). It's free so go ahead and download it then you can get the book.

I don't have the kindle for PC app, so since I was wanting to purchase a book it expected that I had a regular Kindle, is what I'm suspecting. Enough of that, as I have my laptop here with me in Calif (visiting), I think that is what I'll do..download the kindle app and put it on my laptop. Don't know why I didn't think of that. A little off topic, Raven, but last night I had a scare....plugged my Pandigital in, as it was getting low, I guess I must have turned it off, then changed my mind and turned it back on and all my books and photos were gone!! I turned it off, turned it back on and they were back. I'm away from home, but a definite reminder that I need to back up my e-books when I get home.

Yes I have all of mine on my SD card so if anything happens to the pandigital all my books are safe, I move the SD card between my various e-readers.

Usually pushing that reset button with a paper clip will do the trick if that happens again.

Yes put the app on your laptop then save the book to there and then you can have access to it to use calibre should you want to change the format to epub

Thanks Raven! I did bring my paper clip with me, in case I had trouble on the plane! I loaded a ton of pictures before coming out here and I actually had to do the reset after that. Don't know how much it can hold!
