Where to hang the curtain rods?

The windows displayed are 8 feet tall and have white up and down blinds (not the brown shades in the photo).

i would like to hang curtains on the outside of each window that do not open or close, I think these are called side curtains. they would be just for decoration. Each side curtain would have a complete assembly for a curtain rod, a left and right bracket and a rod. There is no wall space between the tops of the window moldings and the bottom of the crown molding.

There is a nice view so really want to keep windows open and shades only closed when needed for privacy.

Where should I hang the curtain rod? the close up shows that the window molding is super close to molding for the ceiling. i also took one from the floor to display the width of ceiling molding that makes up all the squares on the ceiling.

i thought about putting the curtain brackets on the crown molding or hanging the curtain from the ceiling molding, but really just want to hang the curtains correctky and do not have any space between the top of the window molding and crown molding.

I would mount the rod just under the crown moulding.

Extend the rod a foot on either side. You will need to add a support for the rod in the center of the window trim moulding, which is fine.

When purchasing curtains/drapes, make certain to get enough to fill the space closed. They will look nice and full when open. I would get x4 96" ready made grommet panels with a beefy rod.

Pottery Barn has a nice selection. They are my usual go to.

How much does the top of crown protrude from wall? Wondering if a rod crossing over that part would need to be extended too far out from wall. If you do want to frame window with drape panels but not colse the drapes, what about using those short rods, just wide enough to hold drape panels on each side. That way you wouldn’t have a bar extending across pretty window trim & a rod support smack in middle.

NHB, I will say once again, I love your home! We don't have the arches that you do, but a fair amount of architectural detail in our home. I understand the desire to "soften" the windows in the dining room. Here is what I did: I have French Doors that lead from my dining room out onto the veranda. The designer I chose wanted me to put Roman Shades on the windows because of the millwork but mostly because of light switches on either side of the doors. I wanted something to soften as well as the ability to close the drapes when entertaining or just enjoying a romantic dinner with my husband. I decided to go with plain panel drapes stacked to the side of the doors with batons for when I wanted a more intimate feeling in my dining room (it's open to our living room too). We like a lot of light because much of this room is north facing plus we have the large overhang. I put the cordless cellular shades up on the windows (from Penny's they are great!) and my drapes were installed last week. I'm glad I went with them instead of shades or just blinds, and the designer did agree with me that it was the best choice. Of course, your home has more millwork than mine does and we don't have the large capitols over the window as you do. I love the look of the simple goblet panels though. Whatever you do, as others have said, will be beautiful. You have great taste! Susan

I would either hang some shades inside the windows or put the rod above the top window trim and wider than the side trims. Those windows & window trim look really nice so why not allow them to be seen. I'd personally go shades inside the window frames. You get privacy, block that view of siding and old fence, and still get to see those nice looking trimmed windows.

I would do outside mount roman shades on those windows , with such a small stack back space it will look to crowded IMO nice shades with a white strip on a dark blue .

Hi there. In this case I would hand it a few inches above the molding, or 1/2 way between the molding and the ceiling. And at least 10" out to each side so they can clear the doors when open.

Thank you for the link, this would be what I think would work well. Would you just end the short rod just prior to the window top molding? the ceilings are 10 feet tall, top of window molding 9.5 feet. everything i read says put the curtain rods as high as possible so i am worried that at the top of window height, for side curtains will be too low, but i have nothing else higher. basically the wall height ends where the window molding ends. the molding for the window and for the crown sticks out 2 inches from the wall.

@laurahal11 Hmm - where to position side rods? You have to consider both the vertical & horizontal placement. Looking at your window trim, for the horizontal, I’d place in the middle of your window top trim because that trim piece flares at top. So, when choosing the decorative finial, pick one that fits nicely in middle flat part of the whole 4” piece. For the vertical placement, I Googled images of side rod placement for examples & I’d go with placing the finial just inside the trim piece which should have the drape panel hanging just inside the edge of the side trim on windows.
