where to hang the curtain rod

I have 9 foot ceilings and a really pretty trimmed out window in my dining room. Should I hang the rod above the casework or halfway down the top molding?

Ooohh, this is an easy one as to me there's only 1 right answer. As close to the ceiling as is humanly possible.....and make sure the rod is long/wide enough so that when your curtains are stacked back, you can completely clear the glass and frame.

Any chance of flowering shrubs and vines for that fence?

I would either hang some shades inside the windows or put the rod above the top window trim and wider than the side trims. Those windows & window trim look really nice so why not allow them to be seen. I'd personally go shades inside the window frames. You get privacy, block that view of siding and old fence, and still get to see those nice looking trimmed windows.

I would do outside mount roman shades on those windows , with such a small stack back space it will look to crowded IMO nice shades with a white strip on a dark blue .

There is a very small distance between the top of the window casing and the ceiling, but maybe a very thin rod can fit. You need to find hardware and measure very carefully, so that the wall brackets also fit in the space. You'll need a center bracket for support. And yes mount the rod about 6" wider than the window on both sides so you can stack the curtains back and take advantage of the beautiful view!

I'd put it above the picture rail. It would break up that horizontal solid line and also make your window look bigger. Be sure the rod is also wide enough that the curtains hang almost entirely off to the sides of the window, not blocking the glass.

No, don't clear the trim. That doesn't look too good. It's supposed to stop at least a little bit into the glass.

I think the main issue here is privacy; beautiful molding is secondary. Consider inside mount of shades or shutters for best solution to both issues.

If the interior is rich in color and pattern then shades might be fine. If more on the spare and neutral side, you need the softening of drapes to give the room some warmth and presence.
