Cathedral Ceiling in MB and surround sound in family room
Comments (5)When we were building our house, the architect originally designed our MB with a 10' ceiling like the rest of the house. Dh realized that since our MB is basically in a one-story wing off the back of our house...we could take the ceilings all the way up to the roofline. We thought it would look so grand. Well, after it was dry-walled, it looked ridiculous. So plain. So we had to spend several thousand dollars to have beams installed to at least give it some interest. So then it looked pretty. And they laid the HWs, and stained and finished them, and it looked prettier still. And then we moved in. And even with an area rug...OMG, we feel like we sleep in Grand Central Station. Not cozy at all. And every snore and cough is magnified...the whole first week we lived in the house I would be asleep, hear a crashing sound, leap out of bed to find out what mirror or light fixture fell...never figured it out. Then one night, it happened again, but dh was awake. He said, "well, I figured out what the crash was...I coughed and you bolted up like you were on fire." Sorry for the long story, but that is my cautionary tale against cathedral ceilings in bedrooms. Do a pretty coffer on a normal ceiling instead....See MorePorch Makes Family Room Dark
Comments (16)I have a porch also so I understand what you are talking about. I make sure the rooms have adequate lighting in all four corners and on tables throughout the room. Mirrors placed across from windows also helps to reflect any light in the room, along with using silver, glass and any surface that reflects light rather than absorbs it. Of course the wall color matters also. What I love about Sherwin Williams paint is that they show the light saturation for specific colors so you can choose those that reflect light rather than absorb it and suck it out of the room. I don't care of SW paint product so I take their color to BM and have them mix it for me. I don't use heavy curtains or drapes. I replace all my light bulbs with Reveal bulbs as they give off fhe most clean and bright light. I like natural light in a room but the fact is in the rooms where I have natural light, it's so bright I tend to keep the curtains and blinds closed. Go figure. Comments (8)Ignore the critics that think you should have new everything for every room -- not all of us have that budget. Don't discard your furnishings. That you have exercise equipment in this room indicates it's not intended to be a formal living room. While it may well be that not all your furnishings are on the short list of items most of us want to put in our the living room for creating a good first impression -- they're certainly not out of place for a family/activity room. You might want a larger cabinet on which to set your tv in no small part because a taller cabinet will be more comfortable to watch and a larger cabinet with doors would give you media related storage space. With that in mind, if you're wanting to change this room on a budget, sometimes you can find an old hutch or bookcase suitable for use as a tv stand from an "antique and more" resale (used stuff) store, Habitat for Humanity Restore Store, Good Will or a local charity thrift store that will serve your purpose When you are out and about with a few minutes to spare, wake through these and see if something catches your eye. If you are careful not to collect junk -- if you know the measurements of your room/space before buying anything and buy only what you will actually use, then such trips will not be wasted time. Good hunting....See MoreCalling All Travertine Floor Homeowners & Experts
Comments (14)Hi Beth, thank you for taking the time to answer and for the photos. The biggest thing I dislike about porcelain tiles are the rectified edges that have a super straight edging. My current tiles actually have non-rectified edges which make them look a lot more like natural stone. It’s very hard to find non-rectified porcelain tile these days! I really don’t care for the uniformity of the square tiles with perfectly straight edges - I like a softer, natural look. The last photo you posted -the chevron pattern - is very interesting and I will take that to one of my local tile companies to see if I can find something similar because I could really dig that!
