Lots of questions (and pictures) on making over my family room
Comments (18)Wow - your backsplash and counters are gorgeous! They look wonderful with your stained cabinets. You must be really happy about how well everything turned out. I've been considering remodeling my kitchen and looked at quartzites last week to get an idea of a possible budget. There are some really nice choices in the lighter quartzites. Taj Mahal is on my short list and I really like how it looks in your kitchen. It looks so similar to the crema marble that I'd love to have if I weren't concerned with durability. For paint, I think the Edgecomb gray - if it's a warm, putty color in your house - might look really nice with the warm and silver tones in your backsplash and with the almost grayish brown I see in the wood floors that you like. If it's too gray, Manchester Tan might be a good choice. If you're going to paint your walls anyway, can you paint a swatch of each on the wall so you can see how they look in your room during different times of the day? Or paint some sample boards and try those out. That's the only way I've been able to tell how a paint color might look in my own house....See MoreNeed help with dark, dreary north facing family room!
Comments (15)Ignoring the whole north-facing, dark room issue for a moment. How do you want your family room to look? Whatever you end up with, it has to be something that you like, not just what designers say you should do. All the color advice in the world is useless if you don't like the colors, shades or tones recommended. So my gut feeling is that if you mostly like creamy walls with white trim, then that's what you should do in this family room, instead of trying to embrace darker colors. Creamy, warm, white walls will certainly brighten this space, while darker walls may make you feel it is too dark. Short-term, a lighter colored area rug or two will brighten up the floor and make the room seems brighter and airier. Long-term, I'd invest in more lighting. Two chandeliers, if the room size is large enough. Wall scones, definitely. And a few floor and table lamps for task lighting. You've got dark floors. Stick to light colors on the walls and mid-tones for the furniture. I moved in to a house with one room painted a dark, navy blue. It wasn't cozy, it didn't warm up the room. The color just made the room dark. And no matter how many lamps I added to the room, the wall color just seemed to soak up all the light. It was either paint, or saw the room off the house. So my advice is that if you like light-colored walls, putting up a darker color in an already dark room will not work for you....See MoreHow to decorate our dark family room...
Comments (50)Truth be told, we never were in love with the fireplace. This whole side of the house was completely dated and the fireplace was a big part of it. We even considered covering up the whole brick + fireplace with drywall but wanted to try other things before doing something so drastic and probably expensive. We also thought about painting the cabinets but that is just too scary to me for many reasons! There are so many pictures of painted fireplaces on the net and I almost always love the afters! When I imagine this fireplace the color of the wall, it calms me. The only reason that we haven't done it so far is because 70% of the people who have visited this home(which is like maybe 10 people...we just moved!:) ) say they like it! About the boho look...I love it but I never thought that this room would get anywhere close to that. Not with our couch and the cabinets etc. This room was about making puzzles, coloring, reading and watching TV. I have a blank slate in my living room, which I am truly excited about! That will be hopefully everything I want it to be especially since it is so bright! Hmm..Although when I look at my pinned pictures, I feel like I might need to have a healthy balance of what I love and what can be done here. This is so tough! Oh and I think DH likes it...he was too tired to jump around like DD so I couldn't really tell!:P AnnieDeighnaugh, the brick stain sounds interesting, will look into that. Here are some pictures I had pinned with dark couch in mind... With Ikat fabric on the back on the couch... More fabric on the couch, and I love the pillow, and more spaces that I just love... One more and I promise I am done!! Someone asked about windows. I have no clue. One option I thought was to have an extra long rod that extends beyond the windows and have curtain panels at the ends. So the eye will be tricked into thinking the windows are larger and none of the glass will be covered. I also wanted to hang them high. Haven't had any other ideas!...See MoreFamily room redo (ready to finally make some decisions)
Comments (75)I have not thoroughly read through the above posts but I wanted to chime in! I am occasionally asked to help friends pull together a room, my advice to them is to keep it simple. I like to keep most items neutral and add pillows, throws and accessorizes for color and personality. For your chair that you are looking at in a blue - consider a accent chair of dark wood with upholstered seat cushions in a beige tone that goes with the lighter tones in your rug. The brown of the wood to bring in the darker brown tone and your sofa. Add some fun pillows not matching. Keep the curtains a simple linen with a nice ORB rod and rings. Bring in your animal print in a throw or pillows. Nice thing with this way of decorating is it will be easy to try different throws and pillows and accessories to pull it all together with out committing to a fully upholstered piece that you may not love. For you ottoman I would use a rectangle one in a cream color using a nice tray and colorful print throw and accessories to pull it all together....See Moresierraeast
