blueberry growth
Comments (6)For several weeks I have been waiting for purple colored blueberries. I had my cage setup and net ready to cover the plants when the blueberries started to ripe. And for several weeks I waited. All the time, birds were picking off the slightest ripened blueberries. I didn't know. Until..., I had seen a pretty slightly purple blueberry, and reminded myself to pick it next day when it has ripened little bit more. That evening, when I went back to see the ripened blueberry, it was gone. No trace at all. Immediately, I called my son out and placed the netting around the pvc cage I had placed around my blueberries. How I had been robbed of so many blueberries......See MoreGrowing Blueberry Misty in SoCal
Comments (10)Blueberries are water hogs. My biggest challenge growing them was keeping the potting mix acidic ( local water was alkaline and as the potting soil became less acidic the plants yellowed and wouldn't take up the nutrients I fed them) I grew them from 1 gal to 15 gal plants and then after 3 years in 15 gal pots they deteriorated. I was watering the plants twice a day. An expensive way to get blueberries. But it was fun. Someone said brew up some strong coffee and do a simple ph test. That is what you want your soil to be like. Redwood compost helps to keep the mix acidic longer. Azalea potting mix is good for the small plants....See MoreSoil modifications for Blueberries
Comments (5)The sulfur will take several months to change that soils pH and it is difficult to guess how much might be necessary to lower that 6.5 pH to the 4.5 to 5.5 pH range Blueberries prefer to grow in. Since it can take 3 to 5 years after planting for those bushes to start production you have plenty of time and planting them now will not be very harmful. Your best course of action right now is to contact your states Ag School (university Cooperative Extension Service) and have a good reliable soil test done specifying that Blueberries will be grown in that soil and they will provide you with the information you need. While I have seen much about using Vinegar for lowering soil pH I have not yet found which, salad dressing (about 5 percent Acetic Acid) or horticultural (about 20 percent Acetic Acid) to use. Most everything I have seen says to add 1 cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of water, but nothing about the strength of the vinegar or how much which one will lower the soils pH. Blueberries are bog plants and need a lot of water, although they do not like the roots in really wet soil. Evenly moist, yes, but not real wet. Since bog soils are naturally acid that is one explanation why Blueberries like acidic soils. kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreHelp choosing/preparing soil for blueberries, Pacific NW (Van. Island)
Comments (10)There are many areas in the PNW where soil pH is fine for blueberries. You may be well advised to analyze your soil before attempting to alter the pH. In my experience the best way to lower soil pH is to add agricultural sulfur. Given the right conditions, microbial action on the sulfur will produce acid over time. Most other soil amendments are not likely to produce any long term results. Composted organic material will be good as an amendment if your soil is poor and sandy. More organic matter is better. I am having very good results raising a number of blueberries in split oak barrels. The growing medium is 100% peat moss with some 10-10-10 fertilizer and powdered ag sulfur mixed in. They are in their third year now and producing a great crop this year....See Moreroseseek
