Food Safety---outbreaks and recalls

The good news first. The past romaine salad growers that had recalls in the past are now sourcing their growing fields and testing well ahead of packaging and catching any possible contamination before it gets bagged and to groceries. One recent contaminated field was caught early.

The onion investigation and recall was hard to trace. They come in wholesale and then bagged in the US. A long shelf life has an ongoing infection potential....LINK

The other ongoing is commercially cooked/frozen chicken and seafood like shrimp. Purchased for convience for the Holidays like shrimp cocktail---thawed and served cold. Sad that institutions like hospitals and elderly care facilities use commercially cooked/frozen chicken for sandwiches, etc. (not heated at all). Many of these packages are still in commercial and home freezers.

Bagged ready-to-go salads mixes.

Anything involving sesame seeds. Commercially prepared humus and tahini.

CSA's and some veg deliveries have a direct relationship with farms. No middleman. No confusion.

^^^just a few things to aviod for the holiday season.

A few other things under investigation. Usually prepped ahead/pre-cut fruit salads and something about mangoes but did not read that one. I prefer purchasing whole fruits like avocado, grapefruit, winter squash, etc....wash well before peeling. Especially anything consumed raw/fresh.
