Comments (29)I love the idea of a beautiful pen.. IF he is one who has held on to the art of writing. I also like the idea of a piece of artwork but it's so tricky-- must be the right artist, the right subject, the right price, etc. A friend once gave me a sculpture and I loved the gesture but now 20 yr later, it's difficult to find a place for it in my home-- but i can't bear to hide it away. I love the idea of a meaningful photo from his time with the charity-- if one exists. A personal inscription or quote on the matte or frame would be most special. A favorite first edition-- or one that in some way reflects the charity is a nice idea also. Are there lifetime memberships to a nearby museum.. perhaps a favorite in NYC? Oops. Nevermind. Way out of budget range! I also like the idea of a tree.. if he is in a home he'll stay in for life. Of course you could do the same at a park or similar. We put in a garden at our local library in honor of a beloved neighbor/educator....See MoreBaby shower!
Comments (27)Update: just had the shower today and it went great! Thank you for all the advice and encouragement. Mostly family and three childhood friends. It was nice to see friends she had known for 25 years. I also contacted some of sister's best friends from the city she just moved from and they sent video messages. No adult beverages due to being family (mostly teetotalers). Although I didn't specify potluck, every single human who walked through the door had a plate of food in her hands so the sideboard was groaning. Soooo much food. My favorite baker is just ending mat leave so I got some lovely cakes and cookies from her lavander honey and raspberry earl grey cakes from gateaux rose We did play two games in a nod to my mom who looooves games. One was he said she said, guess which prospective parent said which phrase, and one was price is right. Both non embarrassing, quick and optional. I also made a onesie banner which was a hit. I forgot to take a photo of the finished product but it was paper onesies spelling out yay baby! in the end it was a nice way to welcome sister back to our province and make her feel surrounded and supported by family. our big present (stroller and car seat) has been stranded at the airport depot for two days :( the impending mail strike here has the courier services overloaded and in disarray....See MoreBaby shower registries
Comments (57)Penny, your comment about receiving nice soap as a lovely gift reminded me of a quirky story. My mom is a dear. She is youngest child of 11 of elderly parents. She is one of two girls, the oldest and the youngest were females. Many of her siblings were not born in the US but were born in Poland. Lots of depression era mental quirkiness especially around gifts food money. One year my brother’s mother in law was visiting for the Christmas holiday. She lived in Osaka and neither my parents or other siblings had ever met her so we were all discussing gift ideas for Christmas. We had to consider weight and pack ability due to her return flight home. Suggestion after suggestion was shot down by my mother but the funniest of all was her reaction to a nice set of scented soaps. “Soap! You can’t give someone soap. That is like saying they smell and they are dirty” Now in actuality immigrants were given soap because they were considered dirty, lice infested, and smelly. So I know why my mom had the reaction she had. However I really think soap is such a lovely gift., alas I was not able to convince her....See MoreBaby Girl Name Suggestions
Comments (377)Congratulations, Allison! Such a great joy, and at this time of year! And your wreath is lovely, and perfect. My favorite dolls when I was a girl were a pair of twin babies. Basically, my mother bought two identical dolls and doubled their clothes and baby "stuff". I loved them so much! I named them Jeanette and Janiece. Very happy holidays to you and your family......See Morearcy_gw
