Best Red Daylilies of 2021
Post photos of your best red daylilies from this season on this thread. Orange or any shade of it, including melon, peach or apricot will be on Monday.
Here are some of my newer reds that showed off this season:
Diver Down was one of my top favorites. It was better budded in its second year and is always very pod fertile.
Garry's Favorite was one of my favorites. Its pollen went on a lot of my red seedlings.
Hearts That Care - This was its first time to bloom. Scapes were short, and there were only a few buds. I'm hoping it will do better next year. I really like the look of the flowers.
Irresistible You put on a good show and had high bud counts. It was very pod fertile.
Woman In Red has a velvety quality about it.
Kara Louise was excellent last year, and set a lot of pods. The blooms were consistently round and clean.
Twentieth Century Fox was my best budded red. Sometimes the blooms were very splotchy though.
Dark Gethsemane is registered as a red purple, but it's more of a burgundy red here. The blooms opened well and were seldom splotchy last year. It was pod fertile for me.
Sensational Heart was new this Spring, but it impressed me with good multiplying and rebloom.
Such A Blaze was also new this Spring. When I received it, the scapes were cut off, but it did rebloom in July. It also had a good increase.

2 years agoI've grown to like some shades of daylily red. I really like your dark reds with the white edge. Women in Red is luscious.............I don't have many reds and I have to give you the nod for one of my favorites (your enabling at work again).
Acquire The Fire. It never ceases to wow me in 90+ degree temperatures with its deep solid colorfast/sunfast red. I love it.
Nothing like seeing one in person before you buy it. This saturated red stood out at the nursery when I bumbled into it in bloom.Cherokee Star:
I know there will be lots more of the fancy ones to come from others, but these two sure do earn their keep in my landscape simply due to the depth and durability of their color/blooms..................Marylshive

I have debated before on getting Reckless Girls but always talk myself out of it, but what a clump! Bluegrass Shadows looks so pretty, but I think I heard it does not grow that well? Love your Laura Harwood, Sherry. Mine did well this year, 2nd year I think for me. Nancy, Absolute Ripper is another I keep talking myself out of, but regretting that now. Man Eating Bat looks great Kate, I have always liked the look of Larry's Obsession, but it died for me and I have not tried it again. I got Love Struck this fall, hope mine survives. Garden Butterfly is gorgeous Celeste, Thunder Glow was on my wish list, but you are not the only one who mentioned splotches, so it quickly came off. Love Olly Olly Oxen free and Claudine's Charm. Claudine died last year, I may replace that on. I think a big mole dug under it. Brad, Kirsten's Corsage always looks good for you, and I like Liberty Banner David, Mystery of the Ages is gorgeous I will see if Houzz will let me post a few pictures by editing Back Scratcher has done well for me Blue Voodoo has done really well, expecially since it is really crowded by another plant. I know I took better pictures than this one Enduring Freedom always does well, occasionally it splotches but not often since I moved it Coach's Magic Man has increased well in its 2nd season, bloomed and rebloomed both years I have had it. This will b e nice when it becomes a nice clump Filled to Overflowing almost died a couple of years ago, went down to 1 fan, but is a nice clump this year and bloomed over 6 weeks Westbourne Chip off the Old Block is as great as Kay promised, bloomed for almost 2 months with rebloom Green Rainbow Kierabel is a lighter purple with deeper purple in it, so I may have it in the wrong category. I had Coral Majority but it did not survive the Arctic Freeze this February. South Seas is one of my old favorites and it did survive. I think of it as orange, but that's me...........Brad: That seedling of yours out of Smoky Mountain Autumn is promising, and I always look forward to seeing SMA itself..............Celeste: Road to Hana is new to me and it looks lovely. I'll look it up. I grew Bittersweet Destiny 3 different times and always loved the color. Very unique. However I could not keep it going for more then a couple of years each time, so I finally gave up on it. Comments (13)David - The Ultimate Illusion has a very unique pattern. Thanks for posting it. Nan - Your Curious Cutie seedlings are beautiful! I have a lot more patterned daylilies. I'll show a few more, and some of my patterned seedlings. Rainbow Maker is a strong grower and a good rebloomer. Facemaker didn't do much this year, but I it didn't get in the ground until late October. I hope it will have more buds next year when it's more settled. Bragging Rights has a very large bloom, but the scapes were short and it didn't have many buds. I hope it will do better when I get it out of a pot and in to the ground. This is my favorite seedling from the cross of Aztec Headdress x Banded Broadbill. It has a 7-inch bloom and rebloomed this time. Another patterned seedling I like is Dragonfly Dawn x Bowtie Affair. This was its first year to bloom, and it had bud counts in the mid teens and rebloomed. This one is (Redefined Design x Blue Eyed Bandit) x (Palace Garden Beauty x Karelia) - First-time bloomer that also rebloomed. Texas Blue Eyes x Violet Tranquility - This one is a four-year-old with bud counts in the 20s, but it's a slow multiplier. Here is my Cherokee Star. I have struggled with its placement. I think it will like where it is at now, more sun.
Christine Dixon is an early bloomer, that’s why its still here, it has done ok.
Fernstone is my first to bloom. it did much better this past season, it’s third here.
Her Best Bloomer produces lots of buds. The shade of red is unusual and hard to capture. This is a favorite here.
Reindeer Antlers is my hands down favorite red. it blooms a little later in the season, has been colorfast and holds up great in the sun.
Red Hot Returns has been the best “returns” daylily I have tried. The plant and blooms are bigger than other ”returns” daylilies. This one will stay in the garden.
Red Suspenders had its leap, third season here.
Ruby Spider, love this plant!
Red Volunteer blooming happily in the shade.
When Pigs Fly, not the best performer here, have had some splotchy blooms. this was a bonus, not sure how much longer it will be here.

Spacecoast Francis Busby
Wild Red Heart had outstanding rebloom this year.
Velvet Throne always reblooms well.
Porterhouse did well in its third season here, but did not rebloom as it had in the previoius two years.
Scarlet Angel X Barbara Mandrell was best-budded of my round red seedlings with 17-18 buds per scape and rebloom. It's also an excellent pod setter.
This pinkish-red Dancing Flamingo kid had 16-18 buds per scape.
Innocent Discovery x Dearest Valentine is a fast multiplier and had 17 buds on rebloom.
My late-blooming seedling out of The Ultimate Sacrifice had 14-16 buds. It's a good pod setter even when the temps are high.
Spacecoast Francis Busby X Blazing Cannons had scapes with 13-17 buds and rebloomded nicely. It's 35 inches tall, and with that blazing color commands attention,
This Ultimate Sacrifice kid was outstanding last year with a high bud count of 23 and many fans reblooming. This year bud counts were in the mid teens and it did not rebloom. I don't know if grubs got to it, or if it was just too shaded by surrounding seedlings.

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoWow, lots of great reds! Debra, those edged reds and seedlings are wonderful. I do like reds as they make the garden really 'pop' with color. These are my favorites by virtue of being great plants:
WISPY RAYS, so many grow it and everyone should. A great plant and memorable color
HOLIDAY IN CAMBODIA, brand new for me this year and I'm loving it so far
SPIDER MAN, an oldie but goodie that blooms for weeks and weeks, always looks good and cold hardy
MARIETTA WARRIOR, I show it every year because I love it. The color is more of a bing-cherry red. The blooms are flat-faced and round; one of my first to bloom each year
REMINDS ME OF FIREWORKS, got from our KY Nancy a few years back; this one is a bloom machine and the flowers are huge
SCARLET PANSY....I have phased out many of my older cultivars in favor of the newer ones but this one will always stay. A healthy mega-plant and a very bright red
New for me this year but seems to be a good plant.....FOOL FOR YOUR STOCKINGS
RED TAILED HAWK, always performs well in the mid-late to late season here; was pod reluctant for years but this year I sent tons of pods
ACQUIRE THE FIRE....always looks good
SCARLET PIMPERNEL, this plant amazes me every year. It's planted in partial shade in horrible dry soil but is a massive clump even after dividing to sell many times. It blooms incredibly well every year and is super pod fertile.

KENORA WILDFIRE, so bright it hurts your eyes in full sun. Healthy & happy in my garden
WATUSI WARRIOR, is a healthy strong plant and blooms well but can be splotchy here
LUCKY STREAK, not the most robust of plants here but in it's defense it is sited in partial shade.
JAY FARQUHAR, the truth is that I should have gotten rid of it years ago (and always debate doing so) because it isn't for my cold climate. It lives but the plant is wimpy. But it's such a pleasing flower to look at!

HONEY, I SHRUNK THE CAT....always has this quirky form. I don't love it but it stays for now because the plant is so healthy
JELLY ROLL MORTON, a wonderful daylily in every way and a joy to grow
DRAGON KING, very bright red, nice older cultivar
WHIP CITY SWEET HONEY BEA, robust plant
VESUVIAN, another oldie that should be more widely grown. As perfect as a plant can get here, reliable bloom and a healthy, hardy plant. May not be sunfast in hotter climates.
FOREVER REDEEMED, grows great here, nice flower, super pod fertile

SMUGGLER'S FIRE, always puts on a show with multiple scapes and endless blooms. Grows to be a HUGE clump without dividing
GLORY IN RED, blooms well and a great plant under it; hardy
COURT TROUBADOUR, another older one that is a super performer
RUBY SPIDER, grown by just about everyone and justly so

2 years agoHere are the reds that I grow:
RUBY SPIDER: A classic. Usually shorter than registered. Bud count is low.
Red Suspenders: This is a great plant. Usually well branched and budded.
Long Tall Sally: Big blooms. An attention getter.
NINE INCH NAILS: This is my favorite spidery/ufo that I grow. I actually prefer the ones that cascade but there is something about this one that I love.

SMITH BROTHERS: This is a wonderful black red.
FABULOUS FRIEDA: I received this one this past Spring from Laura (TwixandDud). I think I am going to really like this one.
CHARM CITY CERISE GLOW: My first introduction this year. It is sunfast.

RED HOT CHILI QUACKERS x ARROGANT BASTARD SEEDLING: This was its second year blooming. I like the midrib.
Woodside Luster: This is a nice smaller daylily. I believe I crossed this with PARTY PINFORE.
PERSIAN RUBY: Out of Ruby Spider.

MEGATRON: Huge blooms
CRITICAL MASS: A nice ML bloomer
SPACECOAST THORNY DEVIL: This is an early bloom. Later blooms are thornier.
TRANSYLVANIAN TANGO: This has a nice white edge.
ARROGANT BASTARD: One of my favorite reds in spite of its name. It is a long bloomer and a bud builder.

2 years agoDebra's reds always wow me, love the round forms of true red with edge. I don't have a lot of reds, and only have pictures of a very few.
Fitzasaurus was a very pretty red its first year, but has not had the same color since
Mama Drama is listed as a raspberry red. Not as great as other Davisson daylilies here, but it improved a lot this year. Next year is the 3rd year.

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoNancy - Mama Drama has such pretty shades of red. It's too bad it doesn't perform as well as other Davidsons. I love your photo of Insider Trading. That one did so well for me until the grubs got it. I have a clump of 14 fans, yet only two fans scaped last year. I guess I need to divide it this Spring.
David - Fire on the Mountain just glows, and Fabulous Frieda looks like a fantastic red!

Carrollwood Red - the maker of this was a very special fellow. I know he is tilling up Heaven.
