Comments (13)Hi Korina, Congradulations! I'm happy they're doing well. Foliar feeding, is fertilizing your plants throught the leaves. African Violets can receive a much higher percentage of nutruients through their leaves than they do through their roots...so, when you use foliar feeding there is always a much higher risk of over fertilizing. But sometimes, when you want your babies to establish themselves, or when you want to boost the growth of a plant or even force it to bloom, foliar feeding works if you are careful. It amounts to putting a very dilute fertilizer solution into a spray bottle, and misting your plants with it once every two weeks. It is very effective to speed up the growth of newly potted babies. Even though they need fertilizer, they don't really have the roots to absorb it, so bottom feeding can result in a build up of fertilizer in the soil. The thing you have to becareful with, is to make sure your fertilizer is safe for foliar feeding. I usually use peter's specialties for african violets, I mix 1/4 tsp. to a gallon of water in my regular water bottle. Then I fill my spray bottle to 1/4 with the fertilizer solution and the rest of the way with distilled water. Make sure it's a tad warmer than room temp. and mist your plants with it every other week. They'll grow roots faster, bigger leaves faster, and bloom sooner. I suggest you experiment on two or three of your babies, if they're already seperated from the leaf to find out what works for you, and also so that you can compare them to their siblings that you don't foliar feed. good growing, Russell...See MorePossible wilt - did I do a bad thing?
Comments (5)Lara, I had received a very young Multi-Blue clem in a trade last year. It arrived healthy looking but with only 2 thin short vines coming from the crown, I planted it deeply and it put out some new leaves within 2 weeks or so and then turned dark brown, crispy and for all purposes looked completely dead. I thought I would wait and see what happens becuase sometimes the clems will go dormant with top growth and then work on establishing themselves instead. The next thing I knew it was putting out new growth from the roots. I pinched these back to keep it working on establishing itself. This spring I have many new vines from it and I am anxiously awaiting blooms. So don't yank it yet. Your roots sound healthy. I agree with Ophelia and please follow Nckvilledude's advice and keep her watered and fertilized. Some use rose fertilizer, I use compost or manure. Good luck and let us know what happens. Comments (80)Agree also about God's will. Plenty happens that is NOT His will---because WE have the free will to do as we please. It is the discernment of His will that is the difficult part... trying to figure out which path or action would best serve that will.... and those are usually found by following the commandments, the golden rule, etc. By acting in accordance with those tenets we have a better chance of placing our actions in God's will than by doing whatever we damn well please, regardless of the consequences. I know many people think religion useless, but I am a pragmatist and think quite the opposite. If a person is truly trying to live in accordance to God's will, by looking carefully at his or her actions in the light of the commandments and the example lived by Jesus (or Buddha, or other revered prophets), that process makes the person a better citizen and improves our society....See MoreDo you believe things happen.....
Comments (28)The short answer - No. The long answer is that every thing that happens gives us a chance to react either positively or negatively. If you search out the positive that can be gained from an event, then you're likely to percieve it as "it was meant to be", or "it was God's will", or whatever. However, if you are don't seek a meaning, events are just events. I had a neighbor with a profoundly deaf daughter. She wailed all the time about her deaf daughter, but made no attempt to get the girl either into a special school, or to get her an interpreter for public school. Interpreters are provided free by the state here. No, she said "All things happen for a reason", well, maybe, but it doesn't relieve you of responsibility for dealing with them. I don't think every bad thing is for a reason. Things happen. Yes, have faith. But deal with the things. I seriously don't think it matters if something "was meant to be". All that matters is how one deals with it. That is the only control one has....See MoreKathsgrdn
