Laundry Room Organizing the Home Storage & Closet

Laundry closet design

We have a small laundry closet in our back hallway just across from our master bedroom. Great location, but has alot of unused space.

We are considering replacing our 11 year old washer and dryer and replacing with the LG wash tower. This would provide us space for some additional storage.

I’ve drawn up a rough sketch of the closet where I’ve included two deep drawers, a pull out drying rack and some adjustable shelving. We would have this custom built, so stock cabinet sizes are not an issue.

I’m wondering what other options you feel I should include in this very small space.

Is there room to put a shallow basket-type storage on the back of the right-hand door, for little things like stain treatments, dryer sheets, swiffer sheets, spray cleaner bottles, maybe a roll of paper towels? Even if the cabinetry has to be a bit shallower? and on one of the doors, hooks/clamps for a broom, swiffer, dustpan, stepstool? (i have one of those little folding stepstools like this i keep in the seatback pocket of the car, they are that thin but very handy.)

Thank you, bpath, for the suggestions. I plan to place most of the items you mention in the narrow shelving on the right wall above and down to the counter. Your idea of a stool is something to consider. I planned to have an 8” gap on the left wall before the appliance enclosure. Could store there, but maybe a toekick drawer would work.

Please be careful installing the W/D in a manner that violates the manufacturer's specs. If you have a problem and need a service call under warranty some manufacturers are getting very picky about blaming you and not paying for the fix. Dryers need a lot of air to circulate. You would need some serious vents to provide that air. Enjoy your new kitchen. My W/D are in my kitchen, also, in a small "closet". It had a folding door over it until I replaced the old laundry center with a new stacked FL set. They stick out a bit too much to use a door, so now I can "enjoy" the view of my W/D every time I walk into the kitchen. At least I don't usually forget to take the clothes out of the dryer when they are done.

The project was finished last week - here's what we did: A string was tied to the pipe under the floor to pull the drain into the steel pan. Added 1/2" thick cement board on top of existing 2 layers of 3/4 " thick plywood. 1/8" steel pan (3" high) with a shower drain attached was dropped in on top and leveled with shims. I decided not to slope. Used the string to pull the pipe into the drain. Got a plumber to add connections for the utility sink. I modified the dryer to vent out the side so it could fit in the closet space. Sink and washer/dryer were installed without problems.

@Jack D - Yes, like that, but can you move the W/D to the opposite wall that it is currently on and reframe the doorway closer to the "new bedroom" (might need a pocket door to laundry) perhaps shrink the laundry room a foot or whatever you can get making a bit more room for the closet system? I don't like the open closet system as I prefer the ones with doors. As a designer and a realtor, even though the room is small, you still have the extra room. I've got 5 bedrooms in my home and one of them is only 10 x 10. I've got a twin bed in there as well as a dresser. A few updates and I will get some better pictures once i get everything moved out but i have the door into the bathroom cut in. I have been having trouble with Pella who we bought the door from which has put this on a 3 week hold so far as the issue still is not resolved. We are considering stacking the washer dryer. The location we were considering would be where the closest machine to the wall is. The plumbing in the wall was moved over to allow for the new door to the bath and I have some electrical lines that need installing for the new panel in the garage. Doing this while we have the walls open and since the electrical panels are below this. We have a few tiles we bought to see if we liked them but I am not sure i like any of them. I think if i were to pick it would be the darker 12x24. Any thoughts or opinions on tile, stacking of the machine or anything else here?

We stayed at a home near Dublin a few years ago and they had a big drying rack with a small fan and heater under it. Dried clothes quickly with far less energy use than a dryer. Not sure what kind of drying rack you are going to put in but a fan, even a small clip-on fan nearby, will help things dry much more quickly.
