Stylish Laundry Room With a Dog Wash Station and a Drying Closet
A designer adds function and style in this renovated San Antonio space
After their last child moved out, these San Antonio, Texas, homeowners were ready for a full house remodel. They landed on Haven Design and Construction’s Houzz profile and immediately fell in love with the look of the company’s projects, based on traditional design with a contemporary twist.
While the homeowners hired the design team to renovate their entire home, it’s the laundry room — which had previously included only a washer, dryer and large utility closet — that might be the most impressive transformation. The remodeled space now includes a custom drying closet, a stylish utility sink and a dog wash station — which comes in handy given that the couple has two large dogs and frequently fosters rescues.

The home’s newly remodeled kitchen features brushed-gold hardware and fixtures, so it made sense to use that finish in the laundry room as well. Glossy hexagon tile covers the backsplash above the utility sink and the side wall of the dog wash station. “The glossy white tile and brushed gold look great together and set the tone for the whole space,” Valdez says.

A half wall separates the sink and the dog wash station. Built-in cubbies directly above the station provide an easy-to-reach location for storing dog shampoo and towels for washing and drying wet pups.

Valdez specified a slab of marble-look quartz to create the curb for the dog wash station. “I love using slabs of quartz for shower curbs, because they don’t require any grout lines,” the designer says.
The entire back wall of the laundry room is covered in marble-look porcelain tiles. “It was difficult to find the right spot to stop the tile behind the dog wash station, so we decided to cover the entire wall with it,” Valdez says. “The homeowners have reported it was the right decision because water gets all over the wall when they wash their dogs.”

A former supply closet to the left of the washer and dryer was removed in favor of new built-in cabinets and a custom drying closet with metal mesh doors. The back of the drying closet has a vent that helps to draw moisture out of wet clothes.
Three sliding drawers in the drying closet are made of mesh screens that allow the homeowners to lay wet delicates flat on them to dry. “The drying closet is a special feature that the homeowners really wanted, and I think it turned out great,” Valdez says.

Each corner of the remodeled laundry room serves a different function. Past the entrance to the laundry room, there’s a new sink to the immediate right and a custom drying cabinet across from it. The back-right corner of the room features a dog wash station, and across from that are a new washer and dryer.
The window on the back wall is new. “The space had no natural lighting, so adding a window was a major upgrade that changed the entire feel of the room,” designer Jana Valdez of Haven says.
