Favorite apps: To-do and grocery
Comments (6)I recently downloaded GroceryIQ, which came highly recommended, but I haven't started using it yet. For a "to do" app, I use Things. It's one of the few apps I've actually paid for, but it seems to organize things better than the other ones I could find. So far, it has worked great for me, but I'm still getting used to it. I do have some other apps that help keep me organized, though... A favorite new one is CardStar. This one will scan all those stupid little keyring discount cards for the grocery store, pharmacy, pet store, etc., so you no longer have to carry them around. I was a bit skeptical because some of the reviews said that the store scanners don't always read them, but I haven't had any problem with it. It's also a place to store things like frequent flyer numbers or hotel reward numbers, etc. Dragon Dictation is an awesome tool for extremely accurate voice recordings. Before I got Things, I used it to make my "to do" list. Now, I will still use it to dictate texts or e-mails. GeniusScan is another fabulous organization app. It uses your phone's camera as a scanner and translates scans into pdf files, which you can e-mail to yourself or to others. If you're trying to reduce the amount of paper in your life, this is a great tool! It has come in very handy at meetings, when everyone wanted an electronic copy of something. AroundMe is a good app to find the closest _____ (gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.). RedLaser allows you to do comparison shopping. It uses your camera as a barcode reader and will do an instant online search to tell you if you can get the item cheaper elsewhere. EverNote is another app for organizing ideas or items you like. I haven't used it yet, but like some of these others, it came highly recommended. Some of my other favorite apps that aren't related to organization include Shazam, IMDB, Pandora Radio, Google, ESPN ScoreCenter, TED Mobile, iBird, and Articles. Have fun with your new phone (I don't know why we even still call them "phones" with all they can do these days)!...See MoreSamples at the Grocery Store - do they entice you to buy?
Comments (30)Like Linda and Deanna I seldom sample foods at Sam's Club, etc., because it's mostly the prepackaged, high fat/sodium/who knows what/chemically enhanced convenience stuff. Frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, hot dogs. Ugh. Nope, I don't eat any of it. My small town independent grocery store has never had a sample that I can think of, LOL, and I did sample a couple of recipes at Trader Joe's but thought that I could probably do better myself. I will sample cheese, although I don't eat much cheese, because there's such a large variety that I nearly always find something I haven't tried. Karen, I like to shop places like Trader Joe's, the gourmet food stores, farmer's markets, kitchen places, LOL. I hate the "duty" shopping at my grocery store, things like laundry soap and milk. I get in and get out and never look for anything new or different, I have my list and that's what I buy. I feel the same way about shopping for clothes, LOL, so unless I need new sneakers or a pair of black slacks, I am NOT going shopping! I'd rather have a root canal than walk into a t-shirt place or souvenir shop. When I went to Tennessee to visit Elery's sister she wanted me to go to Dollywood and Pigeon Forge. I asked Elery to please not make me go, the only thing that would interest me at all would be the Lodge outlet! (grin) Now, a tour through the mountains? A hike in the National Park? The Lodge cast iron outlet? Oh yeah, I'd love it, but I'd have a breakdown after the first two souvenir shops selling t-shirts and key chains! So, samples? With a few glaring exceptions, I don't eat them or look for them, I get in and I get out. If I had a Central Market? Now there's a different story altogether. Annie...See MoreDo your grocery stores have gas rewards?
Comments (25)Here in SW. Pa., we have Shop n Save and Giant Eagle that have the rewards along with double coupons....Giant Eagle is very expensive and I have a feeling they jack up their prices to cover the rewards but they're parking lot is always full... Different times of the year, they will also give double points for gift cards and it's really a savings...I usually make a killing at Christmas time and get all my gift cards at Shop n Save...And then along with the gift card, I usually give my son the rewards (which amounts to free gas) as another gift...With his truck, 30 gallons of gas is a pretty good gift.......See MoreDo your supermarkets or grocery stores.....
Comments (24)Stores used to have various markdown areas but not much anymore with the exception of discontinued items which they'll usually put in a cart or on a bossy and place somewhere in the store. Often near the departments the discontinued items were in. Refundable items go to r-claim if it's a guaranteed sale item but that won't include any fresh foods. Mostly it's H&B items. I used to buy a lot of things like sausage when they had it "use today or freeze" and the price was next to nothing. Occasionally I'll see some marked down meats but not much. I was looking at some bacon the one day and the prices varied so much. It was dependent on the expiration date. Then I noticed a lot of it was moldy. I told the butcher meat department worker and he got all defensive and started sputtering "it's the fluorescent lights that do that!". Uh, don't you think you should pull it off the shelf buddy? I quit buying meat at that store after that. Some of the older chicken goes to the deli for the deli chicken and I suspect a lot of the meat that gets old could well be put in the grinder for hamburger. Not sure about that but it would make sense. Funny you should mention produce. I was at Target yesterday and they were putting out peppers, well trying to. The guy was looking at them and probably 4 out of 5 got tossed into a garbage box. I suppose it goes to the trash. I didn't look close but from a distance they didn't look that bad but I think since grocery is new in these stores they want to keep quality up there. Lastly, there is a Cub Food in Forest Lake where every morning a guy comes in with a station wagon and picks up (apparently) all of the old bread and bakery products. I was told he's a local pig farmer and feeds it to the pigs....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
