Style Recipe: Mantel Decor From the Grocery Store
Create a quick and colorful fall display using artichokes, clementines and cabbage
With the craziness of the holiday season, it can be difficult to get to the florist and even harder to create a complex seasonal arrangement for your mantel. Follow along with an easy tutorial for a colorful mantel arrangement using items from your grocery store produce aisle.
Tools and Materials
- Scissors
- 12 white roses
- 5 clear cups or glasses
- Knife
- 1 head of red (purple) cabbage
- 3 artichokes
- 3 small white pumpkins
- 4 votive candles in candleholders
- 10 to 15 clementines
1. Use scissors to cut the roses so that the blooms will sit just above the tops of your clear cups.
2. Fill the cups with water and stagger them along your mantel (perhaps with something underneath for protection), putting two or three roses inside each one.
3. Use a knife to cut the base off the head of cabbage and separate the leaves.
4. Place one artichoke inside the middle cup with the roses, and lay the other two on the mantel on both sides of the middle cup. To keep the arrangement interesting, stagger the placement so it’s not symmetrical.
Intersperse the pumpkins and votives throughout the setup. Tuck bits of cabbage in the open nooks and crannies.

5. Add clementines on top of the pumpkins, in front of the vases and anywhere that needs a hit of orange.
The combination of orange, purple and green is pleasing to the eye, and the shades of white provide a bit of contrast.

Light the candles before you plan to spend time in the room to create a warm, festive glow. The cabbage will last only for a day or two, but simply remove it once it wilts, and you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the arrangement for about a week.
Guests won’t believe that you made it yourself — much less that you bought everything at the grocery store.
This colorful and inviting arrangement offers an uncommon take on the traditional fall mantel.
