Updates should always be installed, whether from Apple, Microsoft, Android, from a software creator, or whatever.

Be mindful of the fact that updates are often like crooks divvying out loot - one for me, one for you, one for me, one for you. Meaning, in addition to enhancements or fixes for users, there are also fixes and enhancements with the software provider's best interests in mind that may not always also be in the best interests of the users. There's nothing to do about it and as I started with saying, updates should always be installed.

I have my devices set to update automatically. Even tho it can sometimes be a PITA what with glitches and default settings, they're mainly for security, so I put up with the inconveniences in favor of safety.

On some devices, you can set updates to be installed during specific times - like when you're sleeping.

The only problem is this has been an issue since at least March.

That's quite an interesting story. An OS update to close a previously unknown backdoor software flaw that a clever software company had discovered and exploited by developing a surveillance product sold to governments and law enforcement agencies. With all the corrupt governments in the world, there was nothing to prevent such a capability from being misused but all the same, it's to be expected in one form or another. And quite impressive.

So in this case, the update is really for Apple, to limit its embarrassment and potential legal liability for its shoddy work. I'm not an Apple fanboy or trash talker - neither - but there have been a series of incidents to knock big chunks out of its wall of arrogance. Remember a few years back when a criminal's iPhone had been obtained by police following a mass shooting incident that appeared to have maybe had a terrorist flavor to it ? Law enforcement, maybe it was the FBI, asked Apple to provide access to find if there were others involved in the plot. Apple refused, claiming only they could access the device but they wouldn't do so out of its policy to respect customer privacy. The cops said fine, we'll go elsewhere, and a private contractor was able to provide access in a few days.

It's not schadenfreude on my part but I think reality is that all IT systems and devices can ultimately be vulnerable and for any one provider to falsely suggest that its products are somehow different and above the fray, as Apple often does, is tiresome.

I wonder why my devices didn’t auto-update on this. They normally do.

Mine didn't either. And my phone bugs me until I do it and it usually does it automatically when I recharge it.

ETA I found an article and the directions to do it so will do it when I recharge. Apparently you need 50% charge left to download it.

Do I believe the story? Is that a serious question? It was in the news for months in 2016.

The FBI took Apple to court demanding it cooperate to provide access to a mass shooter's iphone. The FBI ultimately dropped the case, when they were able to access the phone without Apple's help. Apple maintained throughout that breaking in was impossible without its assistance and it wouldn't give it. Typical Apple BS that its customers believe. LOL on you.

There should be a word to describe the situation when Person A communicates something they know to be true and Person B, ignorant/unaware of what A said, responds all the same with some form of "No, you're wrong. That isn't the case". It's something one faction in the US has been doing throughout the pandemic concerning scientific and medical facts. "Skeptical" isn't quite the right word, because that means to question or doubt, not to dispute or deny.
