Things I Learned on the Kirkwood Home Tour

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

If there was a house tour to attend every weekend, I would hit it. I cannot get enough of them. Last weekend was The Kirkwood Spring Fling and accompanying home tour here in Atlanta, and I have to admit, I was jealous of the Kirkwoodites. It seemed like a young, hip (but not too-cool-for-school, annoyingly hip), friendly, diverse neighborhood full of once-neglected Victorians, bungalows, and fifties ranches that have been lovingly brought back to life by their industrious owners. There was also some new construction thrown in, and so far it looks like it has remained respectful of the context and Kirkwood's designation on the National Historic Registry (let's hope it stays that way).
Whenever I'm on a tour I love to see how other people have decorated and steal ideas and inspiration from them. Here are a few handfuls of moves I admired on the tour. I'm sorry for the low quality photos - I only had my camera phone on me that day.

A relatively clear dresser is so much more calming than one cluttered with jewelry, coins, laundry, etc.
Just because you are in new construction it doesn't mean you shouldn't have lots and lots of moulding...
...and interesting board work. This media room at the back of the house was a fun contrast to the more formal rooms in the front of the house. The boards gave it a bit of a groovy beach pad.
When renovating a home, try to reuse and repurpose as many fixtures as you can. This door to the Arts and Crafts bungalow's bathroom is perfect, as is the clawfoot tub.
To keep your bathroom from becoming cluttered with dusty lotions and potions, gather everything in an elegant tray.
The whole horizontal stripes thing does not have to consist of evenly spaced stripes, and can include several different colors.
If you like to get work done in bed, you don't have to have one of those little awkward desktop things with the pillow on the bottom. I'd never seen a bed-table like this before.
...a piano in the bedroom? Also, isn't that array of Charley Harper Ford Times cover illustrations great?
Digging through salvage yards is always worthwhile. This beautifully restored Victorian was in such ruins that most of the vintage mouldings, windows, and doors actually came from elsewhere.
