Floof! Whats your sign?

I do not put much stock in astrology, though I occasionally like to read my horoscope for fun. However, recently, 2 different people have asked me what my star sign is. When I answered, they said "yeah, I can tell."


Huh?


Anyway, I am a Capricorn. A January Capricorn, to be specific.

    I used to do astrological readings, and it was fairly lucrative. There is so much literature about it that some of it has to fit, and I basically see it as a way of preserving certain cultural heritage. For that reason, Vedic astrology and Chinese astrology do not seem to work for me, but Western astrology does. It certainly doesn't work for everyone, but it works for some people.

    I have Pisces Sun, Leo Rising, Taurus Moon; Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter in Aquarius; Mars and Neptune in Libra, Saturn in Virgo, Uranus in Cancer, and Pluto in Leo. Therefore I have five planets in air signs, which means that I am very mental and like to talk a lot.

    I've done a lot of readings of synastric comparison of charts and also composite charts, which are supposed to help understand relationships.

    I find astrology to be somewhat similar to Tarot readings, which I have also done, and these in particular are never definite but always pose a lot of questions for the subject to answer. Being able to pose or ask questions is extremely helpful and is similar to what psychoanalysts do. Astrology and Tarot provide the basics for what someone might want to know about oneself or one's relationships, and the reader provides the questions to uncover what the subject may have in its subconscious.

    Another helpful tool from astrology is the interpretation of transits, which is when a planet makes an aspect to a natal planet or position in a natal chart. The most useful of these transits involve the outer planets Saturn and Uranus making transits to the natal positions in a chart. A Saturn return takes about 29 years and describes phases of one's life in 29 year cycles. Uranus takes 84 years for a return, and this roughly describes one lifetime. When Uranus is opposite natal Uranus, one is usually going through a mid-life crisis, and one needs to be aware of this and plan for it. There are certain opportunities that can happen during this period of one's life, and if one is aware of those opportunities, it is easier to take advantage of them. Carl Jung used such transits to describe stages of life in his writings.

    Astrology is basically a cultural heritage or memory, and it will vary depending on the culture.

    Some say that Tarot cards are actually the most ancient book, and they were used to preserve cultural icons and concepts. Basically, they were like cue cards that helped to tell stories or histories.

    There are references to astrology in the Kabbalah, but the Kabbalah is based even more on numerology, much as astrology is.

    Ancient languages such as Sanskrit, Hebrew, and ancient Greek all had numerology woven into them, possibly as a way to understand words that might be unfamiliar. In these languages, every letter had a corresponding number (mostly lost in the Latin alphabet, except for I, V, X, D, C, M, etc) and when you added up the numbers in a word, it was a key to understanding the meaning of that word. Words that had the equivalent in number had similar meanings. This no longer applies to modern languages, and so the keys to these meanings have been lost. I think this goes back to Sanskrit, when all letters were also used as numbers. The separation of numbers and letters is fairly recent and came with the introduction of Arabic numbers. Numerology works perfectly for languages such as Sanskrit, Hebrew, and ancient Greek, but not for modern languages, except perhaps Hebrew.
