Questions on vinyl siding and PVC window wrapping
Comments (3)The J channel is used to hide the exposed ends of the siding, you can't get around using J channel with vinyl siding whether it's vinyl or incorporated in the window wraps...find a local building supply store (not a box store) and get references to help find a contractor, because whoever is giving you these quoTes and "info" are way off. As far as the one piece window flashing what I've seen is a four piece system with molded corners and the only way that works is if they are gonna pull all the windows...See MoreWindow Bids (spending more for metal clad as to all vinyl)
Comments (7)My truck is at the shop today with the brochures so don't have the brands handy. We have been carefully checking the low e and qualifications. I'm checking out the softlite company now. I'm not sure if they offer that color match deal on the interior color or not. It seems most all vinyl manufactures offer white or beige on the inside. My interior trim is almond color (same exact match as a standard almond electrical wall plate) and I'm suprised they are not making windows in that color. Most all new houses now seem to use almond on trim rather than stark white. That seems to be why most custom decorated houses utilize a printable window. The beige color just looks really tan/ dark. Is a fiberglass window comparable to vinyl or better? Climate here is up to 110 degrees F in the summer and down to 0 degrees F in the winter....See MoreDIY Replacement Windows - in Vinyl siding
Comments (4)We have vinyl siding and are DIY Marvin Replacement windows - they are actually very easy - we have some wood rot - we are heat gunning it - repairing it with wood filler/stop rot stuff, priming, painting it, and putting in the new windows and then triming the outside with their metal trim. We - husband and myself can do 2-3 easily in a day, taking our time - without trim work - getting them in solid (we are replacing all trim too at some point). It is that easy if you have talent and she is slightly willing to help and your measurements are good (getting the bevel made the difference for us vs. the first trial window we did). It is going so well, we didn't do a few windows and my husband wants to go ahead and probably finish out those (I'm tired and not so thrilled with the idea as we only have two of the 12 we ordered left which will go in this weekend). We tried going through Lowes and we couldn't figure out how they got their measurements - had them have two subs come out and gave up - I found a Marvin to give me the contractor price, so we decided to spend more on a better window than the Pella and DIY with the savings... worth every penny but we just DIY'ed a kitchen too. I can't imagine the installers if they were Lowes or Marvin doing the prep work with the wood rot we are doing, which makes me feel better knowing we are doing it "right." My advice is to try one window - if you get that one, then buy the rest. If you can't do it, have a backup plan - friend or handyman and pay for the rest of the install but it isn't rocket science like people make it out to be. If you are a little short on your measurements it's ok as you want some give for easy install and you can redo your trim to hide it....easy fix. (we have good measurements but we are still redoing the trim as it's looking bad)...See MoreBeige vinyl windows and plantation shutters--I hate beige! HELP!
Comments (14)Random thoughts: - The outside looks neat as a pin. Clearly this house has been well cared-for, though I agree with the above poster that the landscaping is kinda dull. - The wall paper may or may not be a problem. When I moved into my current house, I immediately renovated the two bathrooms ... I pulled down the wallpaper from the large master bath in about 15 minutes, but I spent three days of misery in the similar-sized hall bath. Why? The walls in the master bath were "primed" before the wallpaper went up. ALWAYS prime your walls before painting or wallpapering. ALWAYS. More to the point: I hope your walls were primed. - I do like plantation shutters (and intend to have them in my new house), but they don't seem right for your 1970s ranch, and I don't think I'd like them in beige. I agree you should take them out ... but sell them on eBay or Craigslist. They're worth money. Don't bother painting them ... if I were buying, I wouldn't mind painting them. - As for the beige trim, it will be a monster to paint (or a monster-sized bill, if you pay someone to do it), but it's not hard work ... just tedious work. Since you're talking about color preferences, not functional needs, you don't have to do it all at once. - While you're painting things, I'd look at those dark brown gutter spouts. They seem to stand out in a bad way. - I like white-painted brick, and I think this house would look lovely if the wood trim above the windows were a light-to-midtone blue. - I'd think lose that wrought iron railing on the front ... maybe. I don't particularly like it, but it does fit with the house....See MoreSmallbath5
