Kitchen and Butler’s Pantry in White, Wood and Blue
Having a separate public-facing kitchen and a hidden space for baking and prepping hors d’oeuvres works for this family
The refrigerator, sink, cooktop and island are in the front kitchen and form an easy work triangle for putting together daily meals. The homeowners tend to eat a lot of salads and fresh vegetables, and they may grill a piece of meat for a simple dinner. (There is a griddle beneath a cutting board cover). The full column fridge is a refrigerator only (no freezer); the island contains two freezer drawers that face the range. For cleanup, the dishwasher is to the left of the sink, hidden by a cabinet panel.

The butler’s pantry has two entrances, one to the left of the range, the other to the right. The designers at Mingle placed an oven and a convection steam oven on the left-hand side of the butler’s pantry just past the opening from the public kitchen.

Since the ovens are just beyond the door, it’s not far for the homeowners to pop in from the front kitchen and place some baking potatoes in the oven for dinner.
The butler’s pantry is where the homeowner bakes and prepares fancy hors d’oeuvres for parties. The cupboard above the oven has vertical dividers and houses baking sheets and trays. The four drawers to the right of the oven contain dividers specifically designed to corral her baking utensils and tools. Ample open shelving provides easy access to dishes and food, and she keeps her mixing bowl and blender out on the counter but looking neat tucked beneath the open shelving in the far corner. The countertop here is quartz and makes a great surface for rolling out dough.
The designers at Mingle grouped the stainless steel appliances in the butler’s pantry and kept the ones in the public kitchen (dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer drawers) hidden behind cabinetry panels. The stainless appliance on the window wall in the butler’s pantry is a microwave. The blue cabinetry paint is Gale Force by Sherwin-Williams.

The shiplap in the kitchen is exterior shiplap siding, a noncombustible material that meets local building code for being close to a professional-grade range.
The kitchen island features the same engineered quartz as the butler’s pantry, while the perimeter counters have a dark quartz.
The flooring is hand-scraped engineered maple. The range hood is knotty alder finished with a dark stain that matches the wood and finish of the kitchen island. Bringing in wood adds another element to the primarily white kitchen. “It’s nice to incorporate that warmth,” says Claire Teunissen of Mingle, the design assistant for this project. “Otherwise all white can feel a little sterile.”
Brass cabinetry hardware in the public kitchen and the butler’s pantry warm up both spaces. The pot filler above the stove and pendants over the island repeat the brass finish. The homeowners chose stools without backs on the short side of the island in order not to block the view of the kitchen from the adjacent living and dining spaces.

The wood on the island and range hood is the same as the knotty alder used to create a bar area across from the kitchen island.

Kitchen and Butler’s Pantry at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple and one of their parents
Location: Wayzata, Minnesota
Size: 388 square feet (36 square meters)
Designer: Leslie Meyers and Claire Teunissen of Mingle
The owners of this home entertain frequently, and the wife is an avid cook. They wanted a two-part kitchen with a public kitchen space and a hidden butler’s pantry where they could stage dishes and conceal messes when they are hosting guests. They also wanted the butler’s pantry to serve as a baking center. Designers from Mingle created this new kitchen as part of a larger remodeling project at this home.
