White patches on my rose leaves. Is she sick?

I saw some white patches on my rose leaves, and some of them start to look dried and curved. is this a sick sign of the rose? she just had her first bloom...

The beginning of Powdery Mildew.

I did A little research on the web, and it said the same thing. Someone said need to remove all infested leaves and then apply treatment, and someone said no need to remove the leaves. Should I keep the leaves?

Michaelg, I appreciate your knowledge, which helps me to understand the role of soluble vs. insoluble nitrogen. And BellaL, thanks for presenting your problem which helps me in Illinois. I read that tree bark deprives the soil of nitrogen as it breaks down, so we always need to add nitrogen to the soil if tree bark mulch is used. Composted grass clippings and leaves are far superior to tree bark mulch in supplying nitrogen. I mulched my tomato bed with grass clippings, and don't have to water my tomato garden this year, since it retains moisture well. Another way to know if your soil is deficient in nitrogen is the presence of nitrogen-fixation plants, such as clover, and those annoying stringy weeds with white flowers. I got sick of pulling those long stringy weeds up, so I dumped bloodmeal around my Norway Spruces - and no more stringy weeds afterwards. Plants can extract phosphoric acid (good for blooms) easily from clay soil, but have a hard time extracting nitrogen. My white pines are yellowish in new growth, - so I dumped blood meal on them, and the growth is deeper green, with less pine cones. The good result of horse manure on my roses can be verified by this sentence from the reference book, Botanica's Roses "High alkalinity can be reduced by the addition of peat or manure, or by applying suplphate of ammonia." The best instruction for growing roses is from Pat of Rosesownrootunlimited, which I erred and learned from my mistakes: 1) Dig hole at least 18" deep and wide 2) Plant rose slightly raised (esp. in clay with poor drainage) 3) Per planting hole: 2 cups of alfafa meal, 1/4 peat moss, 1/4 compost, 1/4 top soil, and 1/4 clay. The other stuff, such as 1 cup superphosphate, 1 cup lime, 1 cup gympsum are NOT necessary for clay soil in Illinois, heavy in dolomite lime. The 2 cups of alfafa meal are important. Out of my 10 baby roses planted this year, 2 are underperformers (Eglantyne and William Shakespeare in a pot - and both these don't get the 2 cups of nitrogen like others, so the leaves are more yellowish).

I'll have to take another pic of the last one. It has round red and black berries. I was outside with Mercedes when I took those because she was restless and kept wanting to go outside so I took the camera and we went out for a while. I wish I had known what was going to happen I would have taken a last pic of her but its better to remember her when she was well. Yes she was old and her heart gave out. She has been on heart meds for a a few months and the vet didn't tell me that it would only work for a little while. He wasn't surprised when I called him at 2:30 this morning and said to just let her go there was nothing more to be done for her. Enough about the sad part. The red plumie smells just like deep red roses. The really big brug in the bed out back is Naughty Nick. He lost all his buds when it got hot again. No Karyn, the new leaves look funky on the Daydreams but the others that got burned look ok now that they lost the affected leaves. Do you think I should destroy the Daydreams? I am now worried it might be a virus.

A Richard ergo grip safety razor scraper is what I reach for first when cleaning any Ceran cooking surface. I run the blade over the entire surface, just like a wood plane, using both hands, from one front corner to the other. Then I lift the blade, go back to the start and shift over to the next "lane" and keep doing it until finished up on a lane from back corner to back corner. When the blade tells you it is finding something "good" to work on lane after lane it is useful to flip the razor over every couple of lanes. Also try scraping any areas that gave the blade a hard time earlier from front to back as well when finished to check that the resistance is gone. I know someone whose motto is: "A Ceran top and politics have a lot in common, both can seem quite clean but when you start scraping them you may be surprised at what shows up". Cerama Bryte should be the last cleaning step, not the first, and it should be buffed away before it is completely dry. There are quite a few substitutes like the eraser in a pinch. Vim works well but don't let it dry on you, and it leaves oily streaks that will buff away after left for a day or so or go away eventually on their own. A lightly moistened strong paper towel used with a bit of sprinkled flour is also effective.

I know that sick feeling all too well!! Eight weeks ago I picked a wood and color that I loved. It's a warm wood tone on beech with rustic knots. It's been so many weeks since I've since it that I began panicing all this week as the cabinets were scheduled to arrive. I was freaking out thinking I had ordered cabinets so rustic that I would need to hang antlers in the kitchen just to 'carry on the theme'!! :-) I've seriously lost sleep over this! Well, they arrived this afternoon and all my fears are gone - - they are stunning! With just the right amount of rustic to look Old World and the warm wood tones are gorgeous. I, too, have a creamy colored island and it's beautiful. Let's just hope it all comes together as pretty in real life as it is in my head! :-) I had visions of a creamy white kitchen as well, but when it didn't go with anything else in my house, I knew I had to lose the dream. But pictures of creamy kitchens will always make my heart beat quicker!! I hope you grow to LOVE your new kitchen - cherry wood and all! I look forward to seeing pictures!

Make sure your rose is getting enough light, water, and nutrients. PM usually affects young roses or roses that are stressed.

I just got my roses 2 months ago. Watering them everyday. I’m in California, so a lot of sunlight everyday as well. They’re about 3 years old. So maybe because they’re stressed due to relocation? I placed them to another spot which is fully sunshine all day, and just got the neem oil spray. Hopefully they’ll get better soon.

... and air. A thick bush with branches criss-crossing through the center will prevent air circulation which is an ideal condition for mildew.

Powdery mildew is my diagnosis, too. Cool nights, hot days and little/no rainfall or overhead watering favors the spread of this tough to control fungus. It's even harder than black spot to control here in W. PA, but not quite as destructive, and it is seasonal here, occurring mostly in spring and fall when hot days and cool nights are the norm and pretty much skipping summer, thank G-d!

Good control can be achieved by regular spraying with Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses, Flowers and Shrubs. Immunox is reported to be a better control for PM, but I have not yet tried it.

I would not remove any damaged foliage, just a regular spray of fungicide is my advice.

In CA, weather conditions that favor PM, cool nights, warm days and no rain or overhead watering, may be an ever present challenge. Can't change the weather! I heard of a W. PA rose gardener who controlled our seasonal PM here very effectively with regular, daily overhead watering of the bushes, just plain tap water from the garden hose. Of course, the dreaded black spot fungus would be stimulated to proliferate under such management.
