Remodeling Design Dilemma

Countertop Dilemma Master Bedroom

When we redid our Master Bath three years ago, we chose dark cabinets with the quartz countertop in vanilla with slight veining. Fast forward three years and we are installing a media cabinet in the Master Bedroom. We chose white for that cabinet with shelves in the dark wood of the bath cabinets. We were planning to use the remaining slab of quartz for the countertop; however, the possible layouts are not optimum and the fabricator would like us to sign a waiver if we decide to go with option 2. The explanation is that cuts for the bump could end up with chipping in some areas. Oh, and in the span of three years the quartz we chose has been discontinued so purchasing another slab is not an option.

What are our options?

1) Go with option 1 of the cuts and live with it.

2) Go with option 2 of the cuts, sign the waiver and hope for the best.

3) Husband has one option he likes: use the slab for the middle piece with wood on the right and left sides. I'm not too fond of that one.

4) My latest choice that I like is forget the quartz slab and put down wood in the same color of the shelves (and bath cabinets). The leftover slab can always be used for remodel of the other two bathrooms.

#4. Keep bathroom surfaces in the bathroom and bedroom surfaces in the bedroom.

#4. You don't need a quartz countertop for the media center, and wood will look nicer in that space.

There are many on GW who don't like pocket doors. I'm NOT one of them! If they are done right, they're great! One needs a very heavy, solid wood door for privacy. The woodwork slot into which the leading edge of the door fits when closed, needs to be deep - far deeper than is typical here in the US. When it is, the fit is good and the door is as sound-proof as a normal hinge-hung door. I learned this 2 years ago while renting a very high end house in London for a week. I have pocket doors in my own house - 4 to be exact. I have no problem with them except they don't close quite as closely as I would prefer. When I looked at the pocket door to the bathroom in London, I could quickly see why it worked so well - a deep "pocket" for it to close into. It made no noise at all while being closed. I have a feeling that all pocket door hardware is not created equal! The top quality hardware will be quiet and seamless. This is not the place to save a bit of money.

Keep playing with drawing til something makes sense. I tried to sketch something out, let's see if I can attach it. Did you want to add a tub, or just a bigger shower? If windows can be added to the left wall, it would really add more possibilities! I made the bigger closet skinny so the window light still comes in. This loses the hall closets so it may need more work. I am not a big fan of the hall between the closets, it was my attempt to keep the window. Either of the closets where the master was could be removed to be a sitting area or a desk area. Obviously I am not a professional. I just like looking at and thinking about floor plans. I am sure others will jump in to improve my sketch by criticizing it lol. I left the toilet and one sink in place. I think the shower could use the same drain and it would not be too bad to extend the pipes to make it bigger, and add the second sink. The entry point is a bit crowded but I was having trouble adding a second sink if I made the bathroom door by the closets.

very difficult to get an idea of the colors because your lighting is yellow. try using a flash, or turning off your lights, Or, get 4000K bulbs that give off a natural white light. Is this a true color? are the walls yellow/gold, the dresser greenish? greenish/gold bed spread? Olive green curtains? I see no beige. I only see gold/yellow, and shades of green, w/hints of golds and a slight chartreuse.

The natural place for the bed in this room is the wall opposite your bathroom, with the windows to your left, the entrance door to your right, and the barn door behind you on the right. If you have a dresser, it can go on the wall by the entrance door or on the wall where the black triangle is now (provided you still have 3' of walking space between it and the foot of your bed).

No good solution. Quartz, wood, whatever, you're going to have seams. What I would do is use a Corian type material (best possible seam--near invisible if you use a solid color or small particulate.) Also, I wouldn't go with the brown wood shelves over the white cabinets. I would want the shelves to match the white cabinets.

Thank you everyone for your comments. We went with #4 wood countertops and this is how the completed wall unit looks. We're very happy with it.
