Room of the Day: A Minimalist Master Suite Tucked Beneath the Attic
Hints of purple and gray add just enough warmth and character to this stylish master suite
This Minnesota couple had already enlisted designer Lisa Antenucci to renovate their kitchen with happy results, so when it was time to revamp the master suite, tucked beneath the attic eaves, they knew who to call. “They like the minimal aesthetic and wanted the whole area to feel serene and spa-like,” Antenucci says. “But look closely: There’s a purplish-gray tint to the accent tile in the shower and on the vanities and countertops, which adds just a bit of warmth to the white, silver and black color palette.”
Despite the slanted walls created by the roofline, “it’s a pretty big space, and we were able to squeeze everything in,” Antenucci says. “But we stole space in the walls to create a built-in bookcase and drawers in the reading area with the Eames lounge.”
The attic retreat is reached via a stairway that the designer opened up to create more space and headroom. The couple’s son, who is a metal worker, created the stainless steel railing.
The space is, remarkably, large enough to also house an office where the homeowner works. They silver-gray accent paint on the baseboards is Sherwin-Williams’ Anew Gray. The bathroom lies beyond the wall and includes built-in shuttered cabinets painted in the same gray.
The plumbing was kept in place, and new vanities were installed. The vanity fronts were kept flat to minimize their profile. The vanity tops are Cambria’s New Quay engineered quartz; the paint color is Anew Gray. The master bath terminates in the shower tucked into the dormer on the far end.
White ceramic tile throughout the bathroom keeps the aesthetic minimal. On the shower floor, however, accent tile in a chevron pattern (Verona Blend, Herringbone Mosaic Marble) introduces the purplish-gray accent color again. The window in the shower has its own tempered glass door for privacy. The window ledge is Cambria Newport.
The remodeled master suite is the perfect retreat for the couple, with nooks and crannies beneath the eaves for resting, reading and working.
