soapstone with slab/flat-panel cabinets
Hi! Remodeling my first house ever... a 1950s block ranch house. I like a vintage-inspired, eclectic look. Not quite Retro Renovation gal, but I want a kitchen that looks like it could have always been in our (modest) house/neighborhood with some modern upgrades.
Maybe jumped the gun on getting cabinets made -- they will be this style slab or flat-panel full-overlay. I'll even have rounded shelves on either side of my original steel casement window. Color TBD, this is just to indicate cabinet style:

Cute, right? Please help me with countertops! Husband wants natural stone. What can I say, he had a rock collection as a kid, plus, he's paying. The period-appropriate stainless steel or formica (even butcher block) are not an option, which is fine by me, who would complain about stone countertops?
His #1 choice is soapstone, which I also really like as a material. here's where you come in:
- will soapstone go with this retro look? I love it with furniture-style shaker cabinets, but I rarely see it with slab.
- is there a magic cabinet color to tie it all together?
- maybe a little beadboard a la this soapstone kitchen - or is that just too coastal to fit my already-planned for lil' cutie rounded shelves? we do live on the coast! (just spitballing, I still like flat fronts but this is the most "modern" soapstone look I can find on houzz)

Comments (10)I had similar cabinets and here are the options I found: 1. Cut out the centers (leaving just a frame around) and insert new panels inside that frame. I didn't opt for this option because my edges were pretty beaten up. 2. You can apply a "edge", like you mentioned, but you won't be able to really cover up the routed edges. You'd have to fill them with auto body filler and then sand - lot of work. 3. Get some poplar wood and plywood and using just a table saw, glue, and clamps you can build completely new shaker style doors. I built 12 doors and it cost me about $150 for the materials. Comments (7)I know you're not getting the answers you probably hoped for. And it really doesn't matter than it doesn't bother other people. I'm another one, though, that looks at that as the nature of the beast. There isn't any way a mitre isn't going to expand and contract. When I first started getting cabinets and painting them. (Since they weren't matching) I saw the crack in the mitres. I thought, "Hmmm. Cold contracts, hot expands." So I waited until dry winter and caulked the seams, intending to do another coat of paint. Lo and behold, in the summer heat, despite AC, the wood expanded and squeezed a fine line of caulk out of the crack. I scraped it with a razor, touched it up and dealt with the look in the winter, where now it looked a tiny bit concave. We have more hot days than cold. Anyway, enuff about me. There isn't a "fix" for this, other than changing your door type. Paint on the slab part has nothing to do with what's happening now, so don't worry about that. It's the join on the wood. I'd ask the builder to come to see if there's any way to minimize the cracks. The thing is, these are gorgeous mitres. Recognizing this I think is important because this is a skill many do not have. They do NOT mismatch at all, so there isn't anything wrong at all with the mitre. Insulting what looks like lovely craftsmanship will get you nowhere. Can you hold off and let your kitchen be finished, then see how much you notice? Comments (10)I did flat panel on all of the narrow top drawers and shaker on the larger bottom two drawers; my stacks were a uniform 3 drawers. I preferred the look of the centered handle on the flat narrow drawer over the centered handle on a narrow shaker.one. Comments (9)I have much the same.... a combination of shaker and flat, although my kitchen is all white. I did pulls on everything and love the look. All of my pulls are horizontal as in the picture you posted, and my tall cabinets (fridge /freezer/ pantry) have 12" vertical pulls. As your picture shows, my pulls are not huge. 3 years agoYour husband is right...red wine will not affect soapstone, no matter how long it’s left sitting.
As for cabinet color...if not doing wood, I’m partial to celadon green with soapstone. We have medium stained wood cabs, but we installed celadon green subway tiles for the backsplash, and love it. What little wall space we have in the kitchen, is painted a similar green.

3 years agoI did green with my soapstone too, and the veining unintentionally has the same color! In my case I’m using these tiles for a more European hand painted look delft look. Backsplash tile is where you can really get creative. Lighting too. Check out www.Tudoandco.com and www.shadesoflight.com for unique fixtures.
