Exterior color ideas with brick home
Comments (23)It's so funny...for me the dark window trim and muntins always give a house a more foreboding look...the beige or the white to me are always more "friendly" and approachable.... I think the beige with the black can work well too. Comments (13)I've lived in a midwestern college town for 16-17 years and am fairly familiar with West Lafayette, IN. I also worked as a realtor in this town for 8 or so years. Rules that normally apply to homes don't apply when one is talking about a house near a college campus. Location within walking distance of a midwestern university will trump most other things. While the deck maybe unattractive, there are a few things to note: first, there appears to be a concrete patio, probably attached to the house, which is actually the floor of the deck. It's a pretty common thing to find on these types of houses in the midwest. Second, the surrounding deck material was probably installed for safety reasons. If the patio is high enough off the ground, it needed some kind of fencing to prevent people from falling off. If the house was ever a rental, it was probably a local code requirement. The deck material was not the most attractive choice, likely the cheapest, but it probably can't be removed without replacement for code reasons if there are any tenants. Finally, if the house is within walking distance to campus, the reputation of being the house kids hung out on the front deck will not be a detriment in a future sale. Kids hang out on porches in college towns in the midwest. Future buyers will be more interested in it's location. As I said, normal house buying rules don't always apply in cases like this one. That said, I would not recommend a different color for the door area. It's not really characteristic of these types of houses, unless it's brick or stone, for the color to be different. It would look kind of "mcmansiony" to me....See MoreHELP! Need ideas for exterior paint color!
Comments (6)Since you like grays, I would consider doing the following: cut back the tall shrubbery. Paint the the brick and siding on both sides in Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray SW7044. If the siding is vinyl, you should not paint it a darker color, since that will affect the way that it absorbs heat from the sun and expands. Painting vinyl siding can cause it to warp. If it is vinyl, keep it white. Paint all of the trim white. Paint the door on the left side of the house white so that the side entrance is less pronounced. Use a latex concrete stain over the front steps to make them look newer and fresher. I suggest Felted Wool SW 9171 (2 shades darker than Amazing Gray) for the front steps. The last thing to do is to paint the front door in a color that makes you feel good every time you drive up to the house: whether it be blue, black, red or whatever. I suggest waiting until after the house is painted before picking this color, so that the overall look of the house helps to inspire your selection. Buy some big beautiful light fixtures to go on each side of the door to replace those old fixtures....See MoreIdeas for countertops to go with slate floor/blue cabinets?
Comments (18)@thinkdesignlive I had no idea that the blues I'd picked out had red in them. I have been in touch with a Sherwin Williams color consultant, and will probably buy paints from her/ get her advice about actual paint colors when it comes to that. She'd also suggested figuring out the countertop first, in order to get it to work with the floor, before thinking about paint colors -- and she was the one who actually mentioned (an unspecified shade of) blue to go with the floor. The other half of my kitchen has a lot of bright colors, so that's another thing to keep in mind. I'd prefer not to have a totally solid color -- after all, butcher block would look nice (right?) and isn't solid. In terms of less busy stone, what about a Aspen White granite or a quartz with a more subtle veining pattern? We've seen Taj Mahal in both quartz and quartzite and though it would probably work very well, hadn't felt drawn to it. I also am liking some of the quartzes with subtle veining (see the top left four little squares in the first picture in the original post) -- would something like that be too busy, and/or are there granite or other natural stone options that are similar (if we decide to go the natural stone route)? I also found this suggestion on Houzz of a less-busy granite that might work with a slate floor - thoughts? -- I do have the beginnings of an idea book, here and on Pinterest -- here are a couple of links to ones I particularly like: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/307863324533778336/ I love the blue cabinets with the slate floor! Although we are probably going with a stainless farmhouse sink. Notice the white-is countertop: wonder what material that is? http://pinterest.com/pin/15621929927201978/ Interesting how they offset the look with a blue/butcher block island and white cabinets. We don't have the option of an island as contrast, so I wonder how this could be incorporated. Thanks, @thinkdesignlive and everyone else!...See Moreohmiss2u
