Does my yard need professional care?

Let me begin by saying that I am a complete noob and I have zero idea about lawn care. I am a new home owner who bought a 1960's house so there are a lot of things I am looking to fix. I have started to watch some youtube videos, but frankly they make it look so easy in their videos. However, if it is doable then I am willing to put some effort and spend time learning. There is so much going on in my yard that I don't know where to start. I have a few types of weeds growing in addition to a lot of clover. I am not sure if I really need a professional or if this is something I can do it by myself (with help from youtube and forums). Can someone take a look at the pictures (link below) and figure out what these weeds are and how to get rid of them?

From a quick look at your photos, there is very little actual turf grass remaining in a very lush field of weeds :-) It might be easiest for you to kill off everything and just start over. A couple of applications of glyphosate a couple of weeks apart and you could be good to go!

But when is the best time to do this is going to be location dependent. Spring is not an ideal time in many areas to renovate and reseed a lawn, although sodding or hydroseeding could be viable options. A geographic location will get you better suggestions. Based on the background plantings/trees and the weeds it looks a lot like a Pacific Northwest location......yes?

I agree with gardengal that the price quote seems really high, but it would be useful to add some pertinent information here of you really want an apples to apples comparison of what such a project might cost for a redesign. If you're satisfied with the layout of the existing hardscape and just want a new planting plan, that as already mentioned could be accomplished with just a one hour site visit to get quick dimensions and then perhaps another hour or two to come up with a planting plan that better matches plant choices to the sun/ shade exposure. Your mention of water repelling sand as soil amendment may not be an issue if the soil is further amended with a good amount of compost to add organic content. You don't mention whether this area receives hand watering, has an irrigation system or whether you prefer plantings that are drought tolerant and don't require summer irrigation. These would all be design considerations to factor in before developing a new planting plan. Let us know where you are located, the rough dimensions, maybe some photos of the area, which direction this side yard faces, and if there is an irrigation system(automatic/manual/none); if you'd like more informed replies here

That is a hilarious request! We see it every year, too. The only grass that comes close is St Augustine and not Floratam. If that is all the damage your dog has done, then St Aug should work. It will need deep water once per week as will ANY grass you put in. The difference with St Aug is that it's the only southern grass which will tolerate any shade. And it will tolerate a lot more than you have. Chances are you already have St Aug back there. If that's the case you can nurse that until it spreads to cover the entire area. All it needs is weekly water and mowing at the highest setting. You can mow once per week or once every 2 or 3 weeks. If you want it to fill fast, then I would fertilize with an organic fertilizer once per month. I like alfalfa pellets at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet as a fertilizer. Get it in 50-pound bags at your local feed store - sold as rabbit chow. Apply by hand for that small area. Water deeply once per week. Deep means a full inch as measured by several cat food or tuna cans set out in the yard. For that area I would use an oscillator sprinkler. It might take many hours to fill the cans, so don't be surprised. Don't look now but your dog photobombed your picture.

The idea that you would be catching the clippings on 2 acres of lawn seems very silly to me. The wealth of the soil under that lawn is being robbed every time you take away those clippings, and that wealth is needed for the health of the lawn. I even think folks that rake up then haul off leaves from their trees are just ripping off their own yards. I think if I were you, I might take part of the lawn and grow something in particular that you want to use as mulch, buckwheat, clover, etc. You can grow it thick so it shades out weeds like dandelions. You'll be far better off with the lawn by leaving the grass clippings on the lawn. And look around for other possible sources of mulch in your community. There are so many people that just throw out stuff you could use. And if you ask, sometimes they will save it for you, bring it to you, call you when it is ready, etc. Also consider the amount of gasoline you are using to keep that two acres mowed - no amount of mulch is worth that...

Yes, he told me what he does and about his current exhibition of his work in our City Hall and his website were he posts his work. He gave me a flyer for it and everything. He told me he was a professional photographer. I would think that a professional photographer makes money off his work even if he had said nothing else to me. Personally I am very flattered if anyone wanted to take pictures of my roses. Its no effert in a case like this to share and I think both of us, the photographer and I, have benifitted. I get to see pictures of my roses and garden much better than anything I could ever do and he got access to my garden which really does have very beautiful roses. And he did not ask to go into my garden. I offered because its nice to share the beauty of the garden sometimes.

Thought so :-) And that does make a difference, as spring lawn renovations in the PNW is one of the few locations where this is applicable. The suggested window for this is between mid April and mid May. So you might want to start with the weed eradication soon. Not sure what YouTubes you may be looking at (some are decent - many are cr*p) but once the weeds have been dealt with, if you feel comfortable enough with their direction, you should be able to manage this yourself.

Because the PNW climate and growing conditions are pretty unique, regional sites or resources are going to be most appropriate. King County actually has an excellent lawn care publication that provides all the pertinent info. And Swanson's Nursery has a very helpful lawn care calendar.

Personally I would put the projects on a piece of paper and then rate them according to what is necessary to make living in the house better, including yard projects. If when you have the list, and the yard is more important than projects in the house start with the yard.

When we have moved in to "new" houses there were many projects in the house that needed our time and money. If that is the case I would spread some contractors grass or similar mixture, and mow the results, until the yard comes to the top of list.

The last time we move one yard project got high priority and that was a storage shed. The last few years and yard projects have come to the top. so during the proper time periods I have been working on the yard.
