Need ideas! What to do with this wall for kitchen remodel?

This doesn’t seem to be load bearing but we’d like to open it up and create bar seating facing the kitchen. Do we keep this weird “ledge” that would be over the new bar top or do we remove it completely and have the bar top not under anything? Would it look weird sticking out past the new recessed opening? I would really love any and all ideas. Plus, if you’re in the Sac area and would like to help us make this space look amazing, please reach out as we are in the process of building our team. Thanks so much!

I do think opening that up would be great but also has impact to the adjacent stairs area as well.

An architect should definitely be involved.

Can you post pictures of the rest of the open area this would tie into (the right side).

Some initial thoughts on where it could go depending on what is on the right.

Hmmm, interesting ideas. Thank you! Never thought about such a big change including the stairs as well. Let me post a pic of the stairs so you can see the full picture.

Bellsmom, We will not be wanting a table/chairs in the kitchen. A peninsula with bar stools will serve nicely for eating/homework etc while my husband or I are cooking. No kids yet, but in the near future after the kitchen and rest of the house gets done I imagine there will be a few ;) Dining room is more a formal style dining room for large gatherings. Just my husband and I doing the cooking. Groceries and trash will go out the back door I want to put on the remaining living room wall after the 24ft kitchen area. We dont do anything more than an average family would probably. We make dinner every night, but arent extravagant chefs by any means. No computer or tvs needed in the kitchen. Small appliance storage out of sight is a must for my large stand mixer, toaster, blender etc. I would also like to do a large vent hood over the range and not an over the range microwave. I like having my microwave at a more useable height, counter height is what I'm thinking. I will try and add some pictures of the mantles etc for style reference later. What is behind that angled wall? Is it necessary to leave the hallway entrance into the kitchen? I think you will end up needing to close it off, at least with a half-wall. Is there another entry to the kitchen? From the eating area - does that connect to the living room or family room? WAIT A MINUTE! The wall BEHIND your wall oven / neighbor's range is NOT actually angled, is it? Your neighbor simply cut out the middle of the wall oven build-out and put in a range so they could put a D/W next to it? That is totally Bizarre! If that is the case that angled build-out is completely superfluous! Now, is that a DOOR behind your fridge? Where does / did that lead? And what is next to the fridge? The back of a closet? OK, based on what I see, I would do the following. BUT, we REALLY need a full first-floor floorplan. That kitchen cannot be fixed unless we can see what rooms attach to it from where (especially bathroom / laundry with plumbing). Where is the back door? Front Door? Living Room, Dining Room? Where does the hallway lead? So, just looking at those pics I would first put in a D/W next to the sink! Then I would close off the entry from the hallway, knock out that closet next to the fridge and put a larger entry from the Living Room into the eat-in area. I'd extend cabinets along the fridge wall as far as possible. If that wall actually IS angled behind the oven built-in I'd put in a corner prep sink. I'd turn your cooktop into prep counter with cabs underneath, put more counter and cabs where the hallway is, put a new range where that closet is, a small cab and counter and then shift the fridge over. I'm asumming there is a LR entrance down there somewhere. Alternatively I'd get rid of the table and chairs and extend the window wall cabs and counters and put the range on that wall with the breakfast peninsula further into the room. Still put a prep sink in the angled corner, but keep the fridge where it is. We NEED a layout, and good measurements. Also windows in kitchen - where are they, what size and how far up from the floor do they begin? Also some more pics, please. A picture from the hallway looking at the sink area. A picture from the sink area looking down the hallway. A picture from the garage door (I assume next to the cooktop is a garage) looking towards the eating area. A picture from the kitchen looking at the Living Room (or whatever it connects to) doorway. A picture from the kitchen looking at the back door. You have your work cut out ahead of you, but with just a bit of tweaking that odd space can be greatly improved.

Working blind, not knowing what walls are loadbearing. Here are some pet peeves about the layout: 1) I hate the opening between dining room and kitchen, which sends through traffic by the sink and presumably DW; 2, hate the stairs coming down right in front of a wall; 3) most of the foyer to me is wasted and down the road I would try to reallocate most of it to the BR; and 4, Not fond of both a breakfast nook and dining room. What I would do: 1) Close current opening between dining room and kitchen to provide a large L-shaped area. 2) Create new opening at extreme left side of that existing wall. 3) Remove part of the wall between laundry area and breakfast nook. End the wall aligned with the stairs so they will be visible from breakfast nook and kitchen. 4) Move fridge (counter depth if possible) to the left of the sink. If space permits, steal a couple of feet from the breakfast nook but ensure there is room for a small table and chairs. 5) By moving the opening between the dining area and kitchen, and relocating the fridge, you now should have room for a decent sized island in the most popular kitchen shape: an L shaped island with a working (no seating) island. The island would be a great landing zone for the pantry and fridge. Given the structural changes, I would use a design-build firm that has a kitchen designer and a civil engineer or architect on board.

Leave the wall with the fireplace on. No one wants to see into your kitchen if it is at a time, you just made a meal, and havent had time to clean up yet. I would leave the wall between the dining room, and nook,kitchen too, for the very same reason. I have a dining room open to my kitchen, and no good way to close it up. I hate it. If I have people for dinner, then anyone sitting on one side of the table, has a direct view to my kitchen sink. Not exactly what you want to look at when you are having a nice meal.

Yes, full kitchen remodel and we’d like to open up that wall to create seating and an extended countertop. I just dont know how it would look to have an overhang above, since the wall has a cut out, or build in the wall all the way up? If we opened it up all the way back to the load bearing wall, the cooktop and new seating would extended past the ceiling. Would that look strange? Just not sure what to do with it.

is there something above the kitchen? I looks like before the ledge there a little bump out.

I would definitely look into opening it all the way up and the stairs with an architect.

remove the whole thing. no ledge. take it all the way back to where the other wall is. maybe you arch that opening or have that opening tie into the rest of the room?

can you take up the ceiling in the kitchen too?

since you're redoing the whole kitchen, get a designer out there who can figure it out.

not enough info for us to comment on that.

get a structural engineer out there to explain to you where the actual supports come in. maybe you could remove the whole wall and do a beam of some sort.

Actually, if it were my house I think I would close that doorway into the kitchen and pre-wire it for TV installation so you can clear TV away from the stairs. The kitchen side of the new wall might make a good spot for a stacking oven/micro. Then open the wall into the dining area and actually use it that way, unless you're having to work from home and that's the only spot for it.

We’re just starting out so trying to gather some ideas. Hoping to turn that window into a slider to the outside as well as add in a bat area with open shelving right next to it against the “abc” wall. Extending the island, raising the ceiling, all new countertops and cabinets. Pretty exciting and slightly overwhelming. Lol

You do know a bar area has a high propensity to become a catch-all spot where everyone tosses their stuff, unless you're talking about a liquor bar or coffee bar.
