hang sheer curtains wall to wall?
I love the look of sheer curtains and want to hang them in my living room. I don’t need the privacy so this is not a concern. I have two seating areas with two large windows opposite one another (only one of the seating areas shown in picture). I’m likely going to hang them closer to the ceiling for a floor to ceiling look and the question is whether I should only frame the windows with space for stacking or can I hang them wall to wall similar to inspiration pictures? If wall to wall what type of rod do you suggest - the curtains will likely be white sheers. Thanks!

Comments (16)I like the Roman shade idea as well, but agree with the previous comments that the fabric of the sheers will be too flimsy to use for that purpose. If you go that route, You'll need to look for a fabric with the right weight that will hang well and fold properly. Experienced and knowledgeable personnel at a fabric store should be able to make some recommendations for you. As for short rods vs. complete rods for hanging panels, I've seen examples of both that I've liked and some that haven't always worked. I agree with qam999 that hanging a complete bay window rod closer to the ceiling raises the eye level and often makes the room feel bigger and the window seem grander, if that's what you're needing for this space. It's hard to judge without seeing the whole room, but your goal should be to create a sense of balance with what is happening elsewhere in the room. I've occasionally asked my long-suffering husband to stand on a small step-ladder and hold up panels at different heights while I stand back to figure out the best height at which to hang them (poor guy)! I can then look at them from different vantage points in the room to find the right height to create that design balance. I often use the extra-long panels and I hang them higher, because I tend to like the sense of a taller ceiling, but you need to find the right feel for you. If the curtains are lightweight, you may be able to tack them up on the wall with some painter's tape to allow you to step back, but it helps to have that perspective to make an accurate judgement. As for drapes you decide that once the space is finished right now it is impossible to know what will look good. Comments (1)I'd put it above the picture rail. It would break up that horizontal solid line and also make your window look bigger. Be sure the rod is also wide enough that the curtains hang almost entirely off to the sides of the window, not blocking the glass....See More

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoIf it were me (maybe because I grew up with sheers and missed the view and also found them cold in a way), I love the way drapes can contribute to a room‘s decor and how they frame a window, helping to bring the outside in.

3 years agoI like Maureen’s idea. You could get two rails and do both sheers (inside) and drapes (outside). Or go with semi-sheets that has a little more body when pulled back.

3 years agoYou probably won't be able to wall-mount because of the height of the crown molding in your room. If you want to use a cord to draw the drapes then a traverse rod, ceiling mounted is required. If you want to save money IKEA offers a rod with mounts for the ceiling where the drapery panels can be pulled by a baton. However, a traverse rod, like Architrac with a Ripple Fold drape will keep your pleats evenly spaced.
