Hanging Curtains on a Wall that is 10' tall in a New Build

Do I really need to make the ceiling appear even taller by hanging the rods near the ceiling? I'm not sure I like the gap between the rod and the top of the window trim although i am not accustom to seeing this as I have always hung my curtains a few inches above. I DO like the idea of adding a bamboo blinds to hide the gab. I have added "blocking" (if that is what it is called) by adding extra 2x4's to the studs on each side of the windows, so I have plenty of support needed to extend the rods. Also, on one wall in the living room, i have a slider with a transom and a window without the transom (too late to fix as windows were ordered). Do i try and tie them together by having the same rod height as they are only a foot apart?
