Can you put Bona sealer right after putting Varathane water based seal

My floor guy used Minwax stain with Rustoleum Varathane no odor satin water based sealer. I just found out those are cheap and not low vocs so I am frustrated since I have 3 little ones. I requested Bona sealer so he said he would stop the varathane sealer (put 2 coats) and tomorrow start putting a Bona sealer. Can this be done so soon after the different sealer? Another floor guy recommended some curing time for the Varathane before putting on the Bona. Says putting it so soon may cause issues down the line. Help! The other guy also recommended Bona Mega Clear HD. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Bona sealers need to go over bare wood. I am not sure if, Bona sealer can be applied over another sealer. Bona does not recommend it, because of adhesion failure. In theory, it is possible if, the other type is a film building sealer. Which is a sealer that is allowed more than one coat. A test needs to be done to confirm there is no complications with adhesion. Otherwise, sand everything off and start over with the right product.

You have a binding written contract? If so, make them follow it.

Thank you so much. My husband says to just leave it as is and if our daughter starts experiencing any headaches or such then we will try Bona. My daughter is super sensitive, she has been in the ER a few times so I am especially worried for her. I am just hoping the smell goes away a few days after the last coat which should be today. He said he used to use Bona a lot (never the stain so probably just the sealer) and that he had a lot of unhappy customers. I just read the contract and it doesn’t look like that can help us. thank you so much for the feedback! I truly appreciate it!!!

Is the varathane oil based? Is so, do your test first. always good to test. I routinely do water over oil. But I learned the hard way to give the oil a day or two to dry before applying the water bourne finish. as far as stain goes. do you HAVE to use Bona? no. but same thing applies. test, and if its oil based give it a few days to dry. NWFA will tell you you can use either finish over the other, i.e water over oil, and vise versa, as long as its fully cured. which is true. Oil generally takes 30 days to fully cure. As far as your test, you should be looking at color change. truthfully it will probably adhere, the issue your going to see is the off gasing from the first coat being trapped by the top coat. The main issue I would be looking at is after applying the top coat, look for a milky color change. not right away, after a few days.

Thanks for sharing cac546. Are you saying you can put a Bona sealer down and then put a different Bona sealer over it? Our floor guy called Bona customer service yesterday about a couple of general questions. The ClassicSeal was so light I wanted to know if we could apply two coats ClassicSeal then the Traffic so we atleast better see it. Bona advise against it. Don't know the specifics around why, our guy just shook his head no while on the phone with them. Point of interest with our samples: After looking at different stains, and determining no thank you, we looked at a sample of the Natural and ClassicSeal. We too could barely tell any difference between the two sealers. The Classic had a touch of tint, but it was maybe millimeters difference. Wondering if that would also have been the case with IntenseSeal. And you definitely don't remember any color with IntenseSeal? You're absolutely right about our species of floor being different from each other and the end result. At the end of the day, we love the warm, honey, creamy blonde floors on this maple. We trust any continued feedback.

This sounds like a reallly silly question. But I am convinced that water based isn’t as durable as oil/poly. Cleaning my current home today which has oil/poly- I realized the wear and tear it goes through. Dropping a slice of pizza face down on the floor- no problem. Quick cleanup as if it were there. I worry if I do same with water based it would leave a permanent stain. Like the oils would soak through. I have the mega finish on mine- starting to think I should have done the high traffic with the additional ‘glue’z

See my similar (but far less costly) experience with this post: Ever bought white oak, but got red? And the pink part was not a trick of the eye, but literally a staining of the treatment that I could scrape off with my fingernail. I have had this happen with antique doors I am refinishing as well... As you can see by some of the professionals' answers, there is no specific "white oak" tree, nor "red oak" tree, but rather a bunch of different species that get slotted into the two separate boxes and a few in between. (For example, we started a green leaf maple and red leaf maple in the same pot; they grafted onto each other before we planted in yard, and the resulting, single tree is somewhere in between...plenty of trees in a forest can do something similar. ) Plus, what we've Iearned is that in some mills, the decisions to figure out what's what once logs arrive to be planed is often done by "looking at them." The only way you can know for sure is to send a sample scraping of several of the boards to NWFA or university botany department to have it tested to see if what you have fits neatly into one or the other category... To the other poster, If it ended up grey after being refinished, this could be a purple hue of the red and white of the wood's tannins mixed with blue-ish undertone that is used to make white "cool." White is not free of other colors, and "natural" sealers have a tiny bit of white in them...

I would wait until it's completely dried. perhaps opening windows and using fans to dissipate the fumes would help

as for the Bona sealer, he can't just put that over another product. he'll have to sand off or remove then other sealer first.

(and yes, Minwax stain is the bottom of the barrel for stains)

The Minwax is probably the VOC problem. Varathane is kinda OK (maximum allowed for CARB II = 250g/L or so). But VOC stuff is much better with Bona (in the 100g/L range).

And the reason why he had complaints about Bona? He only used the Mega line = cheap. It does NOT have the toughness of Bona Traffic HD.

What we've learned? He's cheap.

Give it a full week. Let daughter walk through the house for an hour or so. If she reacts then give it a few more days.

Thank you all SO much. Yes, going to give it a week after the last coat before we move in and take it from there. We’ve used high end everything for this entire remodel from appliances to cabinets to countertops and I wish that was the case with our floors. 4 years ago I used him to clean our travertine and porcelain tile at our 2nd house and he did excellent. I just expected the same and did not even question the products being used. I really appreciate all of the input!!
