How to get rid of old house smell- 1976 house
Comments (18)I just saw your problem while looking for something else. Two years ago we bought a beauty MCM house in central Florida. It was redone poorly by a 'House Flipper'. The house was inspected by a supposedly well known company. As soon as move in, I could smell an off smell. A new metal roof had been put on over the old shingle roof.... At the time due to a family member dying the option of having the house taken back by seller and getting money back and getting reimbursement from Home Inspection was offered by a local lawyer after he had another company inspect the house. Unfortunately that was just the wrong time to do that- the timing was just too much. The roof had a small leak one week after moving in which the roofer supposedly repaired. About 6 months ago the roof leaked again- around 3 sides of the chimney by the original leak. I had a different roofer come out. He called the county inspection dept who came out and were very disgusted that one of their people had passed the roofing inspection. The original roofer was notified and was extremely mad that the second roofer would have the 'audacity' to call county out. Long story short- the old roof leaked and the 'House Flipper/roofer tried to cover up the old wet roof without removing it and places on new roof not done properly. That old damaged wood from prior wet caused a musky/slightly moldy? smell. County made roofer do repairs correctly. I thank the second roofer who came out and started the ball rolling and did not try to scam me. I know who NOT/DO USE on next house ... Maybe you have wood that was/is wet somewhere??...See MoreHow do I get urine smell out of the microfiber couch?
Comments (9)Joepyeweed is right. You have to give the solution a good long time to work. If you keep the area damp with the solution, it will digest the stain. I once got blueberry stains out of a white cotton shirt by keeping Simple Solution damp on it for three days. No sign it was ever stained. I have an almost-house trained dog, and another who is on steroids, so sometimes must go in the house. I first use my Spot Bot (or Little Green Machine - same difference) to suck up as much urine as I can. Then I soak the area with SS and let it sit at least a half hour and suck up the fluid (hoping to "wash out" more urine with the SS) and then I soak it again with SS and just let it dry. If it is a vomit stain or other difficult stain, I will cover the carpet with a damp cloth to make sure it does not dry too quickly. If you use any kind of machine to suck up this kind of spot, you will find that the machine soon reeks! I wish the instructions had said to rinse the machine several times before putting it away. I will suck plain water through the nozzle and hose, dump the container and repeat several times. The last time, I use it to suck up Simple Solution and then let it stay in the machine. Oh, how I wish I had done this from the start! My new game plan for dealing with incontinence is to cover the hallways (where the dogs "go") with washable quilted incontinence pads like they use underneath people in hospitals and nursing homes. I got them for my father-in-law originally, but found that they worked great for the dogs, too. They contain the urine and have a waterproof backing, so the urine does not get to my carpet anymore. My father-in-law lived with us and his caregivers were here all day. He died a couple of weeks ago and my three dogs are now alone most days. I have my sister stop by on her way home from work mid-afternoon, and she lets them out for me. On the few days that she has forgotten or my arrangements fell through, the dogs have been making it through the day pretty well. My almost-house trained girl is getting better and better. It almost seems that she is finally "getting" it!...See MoreHow Do I Get Smell Out Of Pet Bed?
Comments (6)Try "Nature's Miracle". You can buy large bottles of it, maybe even a formula for washing machines. The last time I was in Pet Surplus I saw a line of Nature's Miracle products on the shelf but didn't really check them out. I know the liquid worked wonders on my comforter after the stray tom cat peed on it. And it is stuffed with wool! I put some in a spray bottle and soaked the stain with it. Then I left the comforter to air dry, the smell went away but some of the yellow stain remained. So I just left it draped over a chair in the bedroom ever since, and this has been a couple months ago. I wasn't taking any chances by folding it up and putting it away in the armoir until ALL the odor was gone. Even better would be to hang it out in the sun all day - if we ever get any sun....See MoreI THINK I've ID'd all 24 of my succulents but one. How do they look?
Comments (28)Update: Some of the succulents I planted into gritty mix have been shriveling, which I thought was thirst, but watering didn't help... so I realized they're probably rotting. The tall sticks (which I thought were "Minima" Jades but after seeing a lookaIike at Home Depot, I think are actually Portulacaria afra) are definitely rotting away from the tips and new shoots down. :( So I think I need to pull these out, wash the old soil off the roots, remove any rotten parts, and let dry. I have a few questions: 1) if the stem is rotting, what does that look like, and how much stem/leaves should I remove? 2) Can I leave any roots if they look OK, and does drying them out kill them anyway? Or is this essentially like making a cutting and letting it callous and make new roots? 3) Once they dry can I just replant them where they were in the gritty mix? On a more fun note, I went to Home Depot yesterday intending to buy zero succulents and instead spent an hour taking pictures and purchasing 7 new ones! And to my delight, all but one had an actual species ID! Clockwise from top left: Kalanchoe marnieriana Crassula rupestris Crassula "Candy Cane" (with a warning that propagation is prohibited... how would they stop you?) Sedum rubrotinctum "Pork and Beans" Crassula ovata "Ogre Ears" Sedum rubrotinctum "Aurora" ???? that was on clearance with a bunch of very sick and damaged succulents, but it looks healthy enough to me! Here's a closeup of it - anyone know what it is? The Ogre Ears had mealy bugs so I doused all of them with 50% rubbing alcohol last night. I also watered them because their soil all seemed bone dry, which I'm learning maybe I really shouldn't need to do? :/ I want to transplant them to gritty mix today (and do it right this time! Wash off all the soil and let dry). Also at Home Depot, I think I was able to better ID some of my current succulents, like the Crassula ovata "Minima" (#8) actually being a Portulacaria afra. The original mystery plant could possibly be Sedeveria "Sorrento"? Though the leaves look bigger/fatter on this one than they were on mine: OR possibly Sedeveria "Jet Beads"? These leaves aren't bigger but they do seem fatter than what I have... Not sure either of these are it: #3 Could actually be Graptosedum "Blue Giant"? A very similar-looking succulent was labeled this at HD, but I can't find photos to confirm it online. Maybe it's actually Sedeveria "Blue Giant"? #6 I thought looked like a plant labeled Sedeveria "Harry Butterfield," but looking online, it doesn't look right to me... #18 Senecio vitalis (Narrow-Leaf Chalksticks) #19 Graptopetalum pentandrum - EDIT: Actually more likely G. superbum #22 Sedum adolphii (Golden Sedum), instead of Coppertone Sedum? Looking forward to anyone's feedback about replanting and ID'ing these! Thanks!...See MoreOakley
