How to rid house of dog smell
Comments (31)PLEASE HELP we have never had dogs in this house and have lived here 8 years prior to wet dog smell arriving! We have laminate flooring throughout the downstairs rooms, the rooms near the front of house (darker rooms as no sunlight + also street water runs towards our front so always damp outside there) smell of wet dog everytime we mop them, the ones at sunny side of house dont?? My real worry is because i started with some form of respiratory problem soon after this smell appeared and now my son seems to be showing problems too. Im wondering if there is some mold maybe under laminate or under house which is apparently sat on a floating foundation? (not a full cement floor but a smaller square in centre under it so it can flex safely? i think!) or even a problem in wooden frame of house as we have had 2 bad leaks, 1 above the rooms that smell, and 1 where it smells although both were 4 years ago, 3 years before smell starting. I have searched internet and can find no answers everyone seems to say its because of actual dogs but that is not the case here so what is it from? how do i locate cause with minimal cost? Or would the house insurance cover anything? the laminate is glued together so it will be ruined if i pull it up. Ive had a skirting board off and cant see/smell anything there...Or do you think it could just be a chemical in the laminate that reacts with water and creates this wet dog smell? please help i am going to have to do something soon so any ideas / advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks...See MoreHomes Where Smokers Live - How Did You Get Rid of Odor?
Comments (38)cmarlin - if we keep them, I'll clean them, but no paint, I think they look pretty rich and even though old, I actually like them. I think I'll probably put in something like Silestone in a mocha color and it would look great. What will determine whether we keep them is if I can find a good match that will appropriately fit. kelpermaid, I think they painted in the house recently, though I'm not sure - going to try and find out. I know they've lived there for 6 years, so if they are the only people who smoked there in the last 25 years since it was built, at least 19yrs of it had no smokers - but not sure how bad the last 6 years have been. creekside - now you've TOTALLY confused me! In some cases, homes need to dry to the interior. Kilz will prevent that. So will some other products. A spot of Kilz here and there won't hurt anything. Rolling it on all the interior walls may promote mold growth. So, if you are going to use Kilz after cleaning with TSP or something like it, you can't paint everything?? I'm sure I'm not understanding something here - I'll try to read the info on the link you sent - maybe call the co. next week. Carol_from_NY -thanks, I think my cleaning list is growing by leaps and bounds. The way I'm going, I may have to put my mother on the top of the car and tell her to hold on to the luggage rack for the trip up I'm going to have so many supplies to take! Thanks for mentioning the steamer, I have one and wouldn't have remember to think about taking it. I've never heard about putting gum in for smells, that's a new one. I'll try ANYTHING to get the house to normal. Thanks for all you suggested. Well, at this time we are in limbo. Inspections turned up a few problems, two problems that could be major, one that definitely is and has to do with a foundation failure. I am trying to get the owners to agree to fix what's on the repair list I sent them - which isn't everything that needs to be repaired, I took on the cheaper and more easily aspects of it. Will know more next week whether the deal goes through or falls apart. Wish me luck!! Thanks again to all - everyone has been extremely helpful, and it's all appreciated! Oh, one more thing - my Mom was there during the inspection and told me they had a machine running to take the stink out and she thought it smelled better in there - was probably an ozone machine. My nose will decide (if we close on it, that is) THANKS!!!!...See MoreHow to get rid of 'old' wood smell?
Comments (21)I tried everything on the antique dresser that I bought on CL for my daughter's room. Charcoal, exposure on sunny days, newspaper, candles, dryer sheets, OdorRid products, bowls of baking soda, TSP, even scrubbing with a bleach/water mixture (it also had some water damage and mildew). It helped somewhat but didn't really get rid of the old wood smell. Painting the back and outside of the dresser and lining the drawers with contact paper helped somewhat. Using scented drawer liners also work well but now my DD's clothes smell like perfume and I'm sensitive to that so not the best solution. I'm definitely going to try sealing the inside with spray poly. If that works then I'll get rid of the scented drawer liners....See MoreCan you get rid of dog smell in a house?
Comments (18)We renovated a foreclosure which had previously housed a pet pig. Yes, PIG. It stank, and yet the carpets had been replaced. We took out (ourselves, eeew) all the carpet, and loa and behold, they had not cleaned the subfloor, and the radiator covers were disgusting.. On a hot dry week, we scrubbed the subfloor of the affected rooms, once with Pine Sol and then with bleach and water. Turned on fans, left the windows open, and came back after a well deserved 3 days off. No real smell, but we sealed each subfloor before re-flooring. There was absolutely no scent other than the smell of the flooring when we were done. Freaking hard work, but we doubled our investment....See Moretotsuka
