I‘m currently working on a dual occ and have designed in a glass front bar fridge beside open back with 2 bar stools behind the island to have easy access to a cold beer without interrupting the kitchen work zone, the client loved it.

Thank you for this article. So many ways to make use of this space! I love the glass panels doors--what a fun way to keep pretty but bulky items like vases, and it would look nice from the living area.

From what I'm reading here, it is very dependent on how the island is used, what kind of storage you need, and how it looks from the living space (which is an important factor for me personally). My stove is on the island, and I had to give up storage on the backside to cover a large ducting system needed for a big downdraft vent. The panels match my cabinet doors but i can't really use the space. The trade was worth it, and I was also able to put in a good-size pantry to make up for it. I realize that not everyone has that option, or that need.

And to autumnskye--I, too, would love to see more about using peninsulas! They bring back great memories for me, and I believe they could be re-imagined for a modern kitchen, depending on the space. Designers, what do you think?!
