amw33629, I didn't post this yesterday as it probably won't help but I did pull out my kitchen mags and do a thumb through and I found a couple of examples. Kitchen Makeovers Fall 2008 Again a vintage white stove, 18" white dishwasher and white fridge in an alcove away from the cabinetry with no cupboard above. They had their Cabico cupboards hand painted (they wanted brushstrokes) and the look is very vintage with built in feet on the inset cabs, butcher block counters and vintage accessories including a 30's Hoosier cabinet. Kitchen Makeovers Fall 2008 Quite low budget kitchen in a 50's era home. Kitchen has a retro feel with white trim, white appliances, white cabinetry and a sheet vinyl white floor in a tile pattern. Walls are a stong colour that matches the laminate counters (no backspash) It's a U with uppers on only one side. Cute very simple and appliances seem to blend but overall the room has a stong retro feel. Kitchen Solutions #45 pg 38 Creamy white shaker cabinetry with Cleopatra granite and wood floor. Very contemporary (not modern) kitchen with a strong use of earthtones. In all honesty awful it looks like they cheaped out on the appliances (wall oven and micro combo, fridge and cooktop are visible). The appliances just look like they are waiting to be replaced. I like white appliances but the kitchen I'm working on is in a 50's row house and we are pushing the retro by doing a two tone composition vinyl tile floor, mixed cabinetry, open shelves and chunky hardware. Quirky not slick. Smilingjudy's fridge is very contemoporary and her only white appliance which is probably why it works with the more traditional white cabinetry (fridge and cabinetry have very different finishes as well) and those gorgeous Richlite countertops (very matte and just slightly mottled - quite different from a traditional granite). Probably not much help without pics, sorry.

Buffalotina here... When I remodelled my kitchen I already had a white fridge (Amana, nothing fancy) and a white Miele DW which I absolutely love and both were fine and not ready for replacement. The fridge is tucked away out of sight in the breakfast nook and looks OK there because there are no cabinets and the other stuff in there is utility white wire shelving, racks etc. As you see I did the Blue range. I agonized over whether the white DW would be OK but I decided to go ahead with it rather than trying to panel it or anything. My rationale was that as you look at that wall the backsplash is white and the white DW is also in the vertical plane and so I think it looks fine. I also have the small freestanding white cabinet that stands in the vertical plane. Also my cabinets are a very yellowy cream (Brookhaven French Vanilla) and so there was no problem with white on white where the whites might not look good together. That all said if and when I replace the DW and fridge I am tempted to go stainless... but it will probably all depend on what fridges are available at that point. Right now I am lusting over a Liebherr....and that is only in stainless... and when push comes to shove I may not be able to bring myself to spend that much on a fridge. I think I would be inclined to go with what looks more period for the 1915 house...and perhaps showcase the white vintage range and keep it the only white appliance? Good luck!!!

Whether you go with white or dark cabinets (personally, I prefer the dark, even with white appliances) is your choice. However, keep in mind that if your cabinets are in good shape, they will outlive your appliances. You're not enamored of white cabinets, do you want to commit yourself to them "forever"? Unless you plan to redo your kitchen when the appliances die, you will have a similar decision to make when you need new appliances...and they won't die all at once, so you'll be re-committing to the color over and over again. If the cabinets are in good shape and painting is intended to be your only redo of them in the foreseeable future, then paint them the color you want, not to match your appliances. As Rosie mentioned, you can paint the appliances if they really bother you (using, I think, appliance or auto paint or a paint meant for metal). The bottom line is this: If the cabinets are not going to be replaced when your appliances die, paint them to please you, not the appliances. Then, for your appliances....(1) patiently wait for them to die and replace them with black or stainless, (2) sell them on Craigslist and then buy new, or (3) paint them now. I would wait b/f I decided what to do w/the appliances until you've painted your cabinets...then make the decision based on how you think they look! (If it were me and I didn't like them, I would probably go with option (2) or (3).) (If your cabinets are in only fair or poor condition, then you may be replacing them sooner than you think/plan! So, if you're willing to live with white for a couple of years, then it might not be so bad. Oh, and if they are in only fair or poor condition, don't put an expensive countertop on them now...it would be a waste of money b/c existing countertops very, very rarely fit new cabinets...even w/the same layout...and if you end up replacing cabinets, I recommend looking closely at your layout and changing it to be more functional if it's not ideal now.) I would remove from the equation the idea of white appliances having an effect on resale. No one says "I love the house, but forget it, it has a white range!" What is key to this whole discussion and has not been addressed is how much are you willing to spend on your appliances. The solution to your dilemma would be to panel the dishwasher and the fridge, and the fridge must be a fully-integrated style to pull this off. This will be very expensive. For the range, there are some lovely white ranges out there by Bertazzoni, Bluestar, Smeg, Miele, Lacanche for example, but those tend to be much more expensive than the old-style type of white range. There was a recent thread where someone posted about a white Kitchenaid range that looked fresh and not old-style, and was not priced as high as the other names I've mentioned, so look into that. I have a panelled DW, stainless fridge, white range, and stainless hood. I love it. The range is so easy to clean compared to a stainless range. The pairing of the white range with the stainless hood looks clean and fresh. The DW panelling does not show water drips the way stainless does. I was not willing to pay the $9000+ for an integrated fridge, so I am fine with my stainless one. (I am "lusting" a little for the white Miele fridge that Miller pictured above). One last note - your mention of the wood beams worries me. I know it's not what you asked, but adding wood beams has the potential to look very nice or to look artificial, "faux". A lot depends on your ceiling height. Make sure you have thought this through.
