Bathrooms Laundry Room

I would like to separate the laundry from the powder. It’s on the 1st floor so guests use it and I hate that the toilet faces the dryer.
The room is 8x8 and I was thinking I would switch the toilet and utility sink (currently behind the door) and put a wall between the toilet and w/d with a pocket door to separate?
I’m not in love with anything here so all suggestions are welcome!

I have a powder room/laundry like you are proposing and I love it. Mine is smaller. I don’t have a laundry sink. It’s just my machines in a closet at the far end. Sink and toilet opposite each other. I doubt most of my guests even know it’s the laundry room.

Can you wall off the washer and dryer and access them from the other side? Think back of where they are now if that wall was a double door. The washer and dryer would be the other direct, turned 180 and open to the other room. I do not know if that is a hall or bedroom. A hall would work and they would be in a totally separate room.

The toilet will require a 3" drain. You can't just hook it up to the laundry drain. The closer a stack is to the proposed toilet, the better. If homes in your area don't have garage laundries, you will be affecting your resale value.

I've never really been at this stage where we could kind of do whatever. Like with the kitchen when we had the flood, we had just bought new quartz the year before, so our layout had to essentially stay the same or we'd be out the 5 K for our quartz. But it's ok, as it works for us. So I might be bothering you guys in the future for ideas! Think I have the vanity picked out. Hmmm, maybe we should get a new toilet (that is the most used one in the house-or maybe just keep the old, it works fine!) Thanks for the blog theclose, excited to look at it. This doesn't look like a huge house; and therefore the bath plus powder seems redundant. I'd bring laundry into mudroom and make a grand open space with organized hanging and cubbies, bench etc. There can be a drying rod over the washer and dryer. If this is a one story house, have you considered a tubular daylighting device for natural light? Here's a photo of a mudroom that is about half the size yours would be. Good luck

I'd still be concerned about your mother and a walker in the bathroom. How much room is there between the shower and the toilet? Plus where will grab bars go? There's so much extra room around the space that you'll need to put in floor grab bars which are a heck of a lot uglier than coming in and seeing a toilet. I do agree about the doorway into the guest room. However I don't like where she placed it because now you are limited where you can put the bed and I think the solution is worse. The width of the bedroom is 10'8" or 128" wide. Putting the bed between the wall and the closet on the window side (so the foot of the bed faces the entry door), means you now only have 68" of space if you use a queen sized bed. (A queen mattress is 60" wide) So that means now your mother only has 34" of walking space. Not even a full 3" on either side of the bed. If there's a bed frame, then it's even less. If you place the bed on the left wall you only have 126" and you need 3' for the door swing. So now whoever is on the window side of the room has even less space to move around. So while it solves the problem of the two doors, it really creates another problem because of the bed. By keeping all doors on one side, and keeping the original size of the bedroom, the bed can be placed between the windows because the original room width was 11' or 132". That gives a full 3' on each side of the bed. Also note that clothes don't turn corners in closets. That's the reason I left that area blank. It can be hanging for things like ties or belts, etc.

The toilet and sink wall are on the other side of our living room, the door opens from a small hallway from the garage, and the wall with the toilet paper holder is an exterior wall. The new pic shows you the living room and you can see the bathroom door

Kind of hard to get a good photo because of the small space. It’s 6 by 8 total, making the bathroom 6 by 4 and the laundry 6 by 4. You could probably leave the machines how they are, have a regular 36” door instead of bi-folds, and room for a folding counter across).

Thank you. I plan for a cute cosmetic update. Sure, I’d like a spacious laundry room, but that is not realistic and this setup works great.
Ask your plumber or other professional what would be cheapest/easiest... moving toilet to the laundry sink area or to the bathroom sink area. Since you have sinks in both locations, you can keep one location or the other, right? And depending on floor joists, the toilet can move easiest in one direction or the other.

We’re ripping up the hardwood in the room too, so hopefully that makes it easier.

True. You might want to get a quote on moving the duct. Maybe, it could go on the wall opposite to where it is now. With the laundry doors, you might have to move the duck there too. I think moving ducks are less expensive than moving a toilet.

Very true! I hate the way the dryer venting is done anyway so maybe we could do it all.
