Designer Transforms a Dining Room Into a Multiuse Laundry Room
This Tennessee laundry room functions as a mudroom, office, craft space and place to wash clothes for a family of 5
Fromm says she designed the space to complement the other rooms in the house, which mainly feature white walls and pops of color brought in through upholstery, painted cabinets and accessories. The designer covered the walls and new flat-panel cabinets that wrap around the room in Sherwin-Williams’ Gossamer Veil.
The designer added a stacking washer and dryer to leave space on the laundry wall for a sink. The backsplash behind the sink is covered in small octagonal tiles. A floating shelf above the sink includes three Kelly green metal storage bins.

The office wall features built-in cabinets and a desk, providing plenty of storage and a convenient spot for paying bills and jotting down shopping lists. The antique chair, which belonged to the wife’s grandmother, was reupholstered in a classic Schumacher upholstery called Chiang Mai Dragon. The colorful fabric makes a dramatic statement against the white backdrop.

Fromm created a mudroom wall with a built-in bench covered in a striped indoor-outdoor upholstery. Two decorative pillows on the bench feature the same fabric used to cover the desk chair. To the left of the bench, six bright blue metal storage lockers provide a space for everyone to store their outside gear. “There’s a locker for every family member and an extra one for guests,” Fromm says.
The center island features lower cabinets painted in the same bold blue that covers the storage lockers. The island countertop is a white quartz with specks of embedded glitter that add a touch of bling to the space.

Laundry Room at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple and their three school-age children
Location: Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Size: About 350 square feet (33 square meters)
Designer: Andria Fromm Interiors
The large eat-in kitchen is the spot where this family of five in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, eat all their meals, making the dining room a bit of an afterthought. But all that changed when interior designer Andria Fromm was brought in to transform the dining room into a laundry room that also functions as a mudroom, office and crafting space. “It went from the most unused room in the house to the most popular hotspot,” Fromm says.
The square-shaped room packs a lot in: One wall is dedicated to laundry, with a stackable washer and dryer and a sink; another wall features a built-in desk that serves as an office space; another wall functions as a mudroom with a built-in bench and metal storage lockers; and a fourth wall includes shuttered windows that let in natural light. Finally, a large island in the center of the room provides a space for folding laundry, doing homework and working on crafts.
