Comments (31)Good workout music is so important! I have to have music on my mp3 player that matches my pace on the treadmill or elliptical. DH is the opposite; it drives him crazy to think he has to match the beat! Comments (36)There's a lot of ways people age. People can become more difficult in old age because as we age, we gradually loose control of our lives and also gradually loose our sense of being important. A lot of that is societal, but some of it is just how individual people define power and control. I know plenty of seniors who still contribute to society even after they retire, by serving on boards and volunteering for community service. They relate to others as friends, not just as bosses. But some people, like my folks for example, who were bosses at work their whole lives and who define power and contol by being infallible, do not deal well with aging. I would say, generally, that controlling people have a very difficult time with aging, and get more and more difficult as time goes on. 72 is not that old, but some people act like they are going on 92 their whole lives. Which is ironic, because there are probably some spry 92 year olds out there! Bear in mind what others have said, you can't control your mom but you can control how you react to her. You have some rights in this situation, and she has some adult responsibilities. If she chooses not to act like an adult (assuming she doesn't have some kind of dementia), then you are not responsible for her problems. Choose what you will do, and make it very clear that you are going to do as you see fit and if she doesn't like it, that is NOT YOUR PROBLEM. That's the only way you can deal with co-dependent people. You're just going to have to accept that she is going to be elderly and difficult. There's a difference between compassion (which you should exercise with your mom) and co-dependence, and the key is to navigate the line between the two. Recognizing the problem, like you have, is half the battle. And I think it also helps to share the burden by talking with others who are going through the same thing. Comments (22)I did a Whole 30 about 3 years ago and it was life changing. Lost 16 stubborn pounds (that took more than the 30 days) and my tastes and preferences changed quite a bit for the better. I kept the weight off for 2 years and then a stressful few months last year saw me regain some bad habits. I did it again in August and lost the weight and lost the habits again. I now follow it during the week and have whatever I want on the weekends. But usually I make better choices all around. I also told myself at the beginning that it was for health and body composition not weight loss per se. I had my husband take before pics in my underwear and compared those and measurements every week for motivation. I still check in with the measurements when I'm needing to regroup. Comments (26)When I used to drive my kids around, i would listen to their music, and I really enjoyed hearing new artists. Now they drive themselves and I tend to listen to MSNBC which just makes my blood boil and there is nothing to hum afterward. But I do it anyway go figure. We use Spotify. I made a series of playlists by combing through greatests hits of all the decades since I was a teen. Then I made different combinations of them, a playlist for exercise, playlist for rides in the convertible, playlist for entertaining, dance music, favorite love songs, etc. I also have a few opera playlists. My fave background music is Billie Holiday. The problem with all of my music is I am not adding new artists since I don't get new input anymore. I try different Spotify playlists and that does mix it up a bit. I had to laugh at one Playlist on Spotify, titled "Middle Aged White Pop for Dinner Parties." I did actually use it for a Middle Aged Dinner Party (no race requirements) and we all liked it....See MoreTina Marie
