I need you musical advise please.

As some of you may know first hand, I tend to listen to classical music. But in order to help motivate me while chugging along on the treadmill, I splurged and bought an iPod Nano. She is pink and loaded with over 300 classics, but I need something to "move" to.

So, from those of you with more musical knowledge than me, what woudl you recommend? The iPod came with a $50 gift card to iTunes, so I can preview a bit.

What fun. Depending on how old you are - get some oldies, rock and roll and country - the best are from the 50's, 60's and early 70's, they'll get you started. Just don't sing along too loud! Enjoy

Peppi! Welcome to Tread Mill Haven...ugh! I hate treadmilling but music does make it better! Here are a few of my favorites for the treadmill.

Aretha (anything), Joss Stone (Tell Me Bout it), Michael Jackson (Thriller, Black and White), Pink Floyd (Money), Black Eyed Peas, Santana (Smooth), Bon Jovi (anything), Rascal Flatts, Pretenders(Brass in my Pocket), U2 (anything, but especially, Pride, In the Name of Love), Billy Idol (Mony Mony), Dirty Dancing (Whole album really gets me to moving on the tread mill)Mama Mia (Dancing Queen) I even move my arms to that one (picture that and you will LOL)!

Those are just a few to get you started. I have a 16 gig IPod that is half full... I'll be glad to help you with more.

I have a friend who's been trying to turn about 250 sq. ft. of fallow, rocky land into a cultivated garden, and he gets the bulk of his organic matter from Starbucks. If you call them ahead of time, they'll let you walk away with a large garbage bag full of used coffee grounds. After two years of mixing coffee grounds into the soil, the garden is actually growing some pretty impressive stuff (there's a ground cherry plant there that's about 6ft tall now, and yielding like crazy). Additionally, he's been able to grow a couple easy things like tomatoes, onions, and flax in pure coffee grounds. I wouldn't recommend using that for everything, as that's probably the most acidic soil you can find, but it can work. An idea that I've toyed with but have never tried is mixing ashes into the coffee grounds. Since ash is fairly basic (and being a student, I've got plenty of paper to burn), mixing a bit of ash into coffee grounds should make a fairly viable soil if you get the ratio right. Maybe you could even burn those leaves to get the ash you'd need for it. Just make sure you're not letting your soil get too basic. You might want to buy some pH paper to test your mixture if you're going to try something like this.

I think you can use a clear plastic container if you keep it covered completely, like nested in a slightly larger opaque container. Most Rubbermaid bins come in different colors, but identical, nestable shapes and sizes. This way, the worms can remain in the dark 99% of the time, but if you want to show your grandchild the layers, you can pull out the clear tub to check on the worms in not-very-bright light, and then nest them again easily. You'll notice that once you put them into the light, they'll quickly burrow away from it. Honestly, I'd start with a reasonable-sized Rubbermaid container. I'm guessing that you'll enjoy vermicomposting so much that you'll want to keep on going after April 22nd, and the worms will multiply rapidly within a couple of months, so I'd set it up with room to grow in the first place. The only concern would be not making it too heavy if you're wanting to lift it out of a nesting container to show him. Perhaps wrapping it with a cut-open black plastic garbage bag could keep the light out, make it easy to check on, and negate the necessity of lifting a fully-loaded bin. Just some ideas - take what you like and leave the rest. Into your container you'll want to put in shredded newspaper or cardboard that has been dampened - soak it in water, but then squeeze it out like a sponge before putting it into the bin. You can bury some defrosted or already-rotting fruit and veggie scraps in the bedding. I'd also throw in a handful of grit or dirt from the yard - this gives the worms some grit for digestion, but also jumpstarts the microbes in the bin to start breaking down that food. If you want to see the worms in action, I'd bury the food next to the bin wall. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

steve_o OK! I don't listen to the radio very much- but when I do, I listen to FM. I have a few Cd- but usually I lisen to them in the car- even that is rare. I seem to go in 'waves'. I really don't care about color- it just has to look decent in my living area. Cost? I guess around $300- I can't see spending a bunch for something that I don't use much- but then again, if I find something I like, maybe I'll use it more. We only have about 4 radio stations here- most are country western, which I don't like- maybe that is why I don't use a radio much.... (I have an Teac- or maybe it is Awia(sp)in my nice warm winter place that I am not at this year- I'm here, freezing the rear end off. Anyway it is either Teac or Awia, but I don't listen to it down there either, and there are lots of stations there!) The one down south is so difficult for me to use- because I rarely use it, every time I do, I need the manuel just to use the cd! Hope this helps. We only have Big Box stores in the nearest bigger city, so limited choices. Thanks.

We got it downloaded and he really likes the No Squint!! We chose a background colour, very cool! I'm trying to figure how to get his favourite sites onto the bookmark bar, for easy access. FF is a little different now, instead of clicking the Star and it going in the Bookmark bar, it goes into a little suitcase. I don't know how to get it onto the bar. So far I'm c/p the address which works, but that's not the right way, I'm sure.

Oh, I forgot! Bring a round hair brush with you and pretend to be singing in the mike (round brush). Make sure you have a treadmill in front of a mirror...so much fun to see others faces :-)

Here's another idea. I don't know your taste in classical music, so maybe it's not a good fit, but you might like early dance music. Pre-classical. One of my favorite CD's is a collection of 17th-century dances, "English Country Dances: From Playford's Dancing Master, 1651-1703," by The Broadside Band & Jeremy Barlow. I don't know if it's on iTunes, but Amazon has the MP3 album.

I'll be interested to responses to this thread... I'm always looking for good work out music to get me moving. I was raised on praise and worship music, and some of it is fast and peppy but when I stopped being religious, I didn't know what I even liked in "regular" music. So far, I've found that when I what to really move, Whitney Houston is my friend on the Ipod.

Linda, darling, sweetheart, wonderful one, have I told you how special you are? (is this working for you yet?)

Karen, a hairbrush at the club might just get me bounced out and I just signed up on Monday. I am careful not to sing out loud, not with my voice. The next to me last night was singing a bit louder and he really sounded in pain. I almost asked what he had going. Great list though!

Bobby, I forgot about Whitney. Now i have to go and find the CD...

Give me more, the iPod has room.

Probably you wouldnt listen to what I have on my Ipod and when I go onto the Thread Mill I listen to Pitbull "I know you want me" & "hotel",Lady Gaga,Black Eyed Peas,Metallica any tunes,"Crazy Train" by Ozzy and alot of 80's freestyle dance music . It really gets me in the Zone!

There is a website called "Pandora" (I think someone here told me about it).

You set it up with music you like and it will play that music but it will also recommend similar things.
You can then build stations and viola` make your own workout mix to really get you movin!!

I ended my gym membersip WAY back in August and haven't been aerobic for some time 8-(
Better get my arse in gear before it gets much bigger!!

Since you are going to be on a treadmill, it may be interesting to have songs which have something to do with running and walking.

You may also want to download a free music player from KaraFun. With a PC and speakers, you can change the tempo of the music without changing the key. This way you can speed up or slow down the music tempo(without the music sounding like chipmunks)to keep in sync with your pace. If you are inclined to hum along, you can also change the key without changing the tempo:

Gosh, I have 875 songs I downloaded to CD's for our canoe trip. I might have to make you a CD, too! LOL

Interesting coinkydink. I started back at the gym last August and just before Christmas bought my first MP3 player a Sony Walkman. Never thought I'd want one and it would be a pain trying to get it to work on the puter but it's been great.
I'm also more of a classical buff as well but I burned my Supremes Anthology CD set onto it,, and my Louis Armstrong hits and some Dinah Washington, Sara Vaughan etc on there as well.
I also have Schuman piano concertos, Haydns Trumpet and Horn Concertos, Handels Organ concertos (one of my faves) .I tend to listen to those classicals even while working out more than the jazzier stuff or pop stuff.
I find them more relaxing and it takes my mind off the workout.
I sometimes think.. I wonder what people are listening to on their MP3's..or if they'd even clue in looking at me working out that I'm listening to an organ concerto, cause I don't exactly look like the type that would be there in a tanktop lifting weights listening to an organ concerto LOL

Oh yeah, I second the idea of Michael Jackson's Black or White... fabulous (so is the Man in the Mirror, but not as fast for getting moving)!

How Will I Know, So Emotional, and I Wanna Dance With Somebody are my fave get moving Whitney Huston songs. Gotta be careful with Whitney though.... I was grooving and trying to roll up the vacuum cord and got the Ipod wires wrapped up in the cord.... I was sure I was going to strangle myself. Last week, I was cleaning the kitchen and putting glasses away. I was grooving and singing along and slammed the glass down in the cabinet too hard. You can only imagine what happened. I felt like singing Walking on Broken Glass by Annie Lennox instead (another great song, btw).

I don't normally like country music, but I also can hop on the treadmill with Jo De Messinna's Bye Bye, or Martina Mc Bride's My Baby Loves Me Just the Way That I Am. Tonight I cleaned the kitchen to Dolly Parton of all people, Two Doors Down has a pretty good rhythm!

Jazz and big band, (Duke Elington, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, etc.), and old "pop" music people like Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Shore, etc. And new versions of these folks like Michael Buble, (or however he spells it), Harry Connick, Diana Krall, etc. I'm not really into this kind of music anymore, but if I wanted to GET into it, I would start with Pandora and type in those folks and see what comes up that is peppy. If you have direct tv, scroll through the xm stations too.
I have to have a tv in front of me when I'm on the treadmill.
If I have a good movie I'll walk the entire movie.

Good workout music is so important! I have to have music on my mp3 player that matches my pace on the treadmill or elliptical. DH is the opposite; it drives him crazy to think he has to match the beat!

How about some Peas on Michigan Avenue? They changed the lyrics up some for Oprah but I love this song/vid....we danced to the original on NYE... with twenty thousand or so dancing together I think it's too cool and should get anyone up and moving...would have loved to be in the middle of it all. Madonna, Cher, Tina Turner, Dirty Vegas, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and many others come to mind tonight. I love good dance music....I'll leave country music out as I know there are not many fans of good honky tonk music here.....but there is nothing like a wrangler um....oh never mind...LOL!

I need music to match my pace on the treadmill ; pop is the way to go for me. A few oldies thrown in the mix.
Mellow at first, faster in the middle and end. I'm trying to make a playlist right now .

Here's something I just found. Go to itunes, then podcasts, then find the health category and you should see a workout mix with songs called workoutmix.com It's got really good reviews!
