Long curtain rod, wood-trimmed windows, will this work?
Comments (11)brutuses- I think hanging the treatments inside the windows defeats her purpose of framing them with the velvet, especially since she doesn't intend to use them for privacy or to block sun. If she were that would be the best option because you are right, that woodwork is fab! try_hard- First, let me say, I love your house, looks so comfortable yet, nice. My MIL did what mpmg46 suggested with her dining room windows since she wasn't going to close them either and didn't want to pay for a custom rod to be made (her window was wide too). It looks great unless you or your guests contemplate it and then it looks odd and I get stuck on the fact that they are in esscence faux curtains and can't ever be used even if you wanted to. Obviously, other people won't notice it or will get over it, but it bugs me everytime I see them. I would hang the rod above the woodwork myself, there is just no way around that middle bracket. You can't see how the rod is hung in that other room from this space can you? Oh, and a shopping tip! I just, like last week, bought two double wide PB velvet panels in espresso off Ebay for a total of $234.99 (including shipping). If I'd bought them from Pottery Barn I'd have paid $458 (on sale!) plus tax. So when you go to buy the drapes, it pays to shop around the internet if you have time. Comments (14)I can sympathize with the OP, but then we made several mistakes when ordering and hanging our curtains and rods years ago so I think it's the combination of all of them that annoy me. We only have drapes in our master bedroom where we have a large bay window. We should have ordered 2 sets of panels, because when they're shut (on cold nights) they are almost completely stretched out which looks silly, and when they're open they look skimpy. I also wish they were longer so I could have hung them closer to the ceiling, so next time will order ones that are longer even if I have to hem them. We ordered our hardware and drapery from Pottery Barn when we were ordering our bedding there, and I didn't give it too much thought at the time. As for the middle bracket, ours is a big circle at the base, which does draw my eye to it. It's probably not something anyone else would even notice, but it bugs me. I recently bought new PB drapery brackets on eBay that are less prominent (just a vertical bracket as opposed to a big, circular bracket) because I won the auction for super cheap, but want to get longer, wider panels before we put up the less prominent brackets. As if the too short, too narrow, and prominent middle bracket weren't enough, I also recently discovered that we must have accidentally ordered the large diameter drapery rings (meant for a thicker rod) rather than the small size to fit our .75" rod. It took me a long time to figure that one out-- we've had those drapes up for about 10 years now and I finally realized out why the rings looks comically huge compared to the rod. I know this is a bit long winded, but if it prevents someone else making the same mistakes, it will be worth it....See MoreCurtain Length/Color Dilemma
Comments (59)Melissa, I like your curtains....Others have said buy longer ones and hem them....that would be fine but have you thought of sewing a strip on the bottom of your curtains you have now? Either the same color of fabric, a satin fabric the same color, or a contrasting color of fabric....to me that would be easier that raising your rod, taking the curtains back and getting long ones. You will have a nice room when done....See MoreWhat height to put curtain rods in this vaulted room?
Comments (22)Somewhat off topic, you have a very nice living room, and I agree with removing those structures at each side of the fireplace. I would probably put bookcases there, although they don't have to be tall. Large paintings above them or gallery walls would take away the emphasis from the functional TV. I would remove everything off the mantel. I notice that your rug is really too small for the space, and a larger and more colorful one, perhaps an Oriental, would make a much greater statement and brighten this room considerably. You can pull in the colors from the rug for the art and other accessories. Your rooms seem very monochromatic and you may prefer that, but color is coming back in a big way in home decoration, and I think it actually makes people feel better when everything is not gray or beige, and they're surrounded by pretty colors. I would pick a carpet that has some warm colors, in addition to cooler colors, to give the room some depth....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
