Smaller dining room 12x12 and pantry or larger DR no pantry?

We are mulling over whether to go with a larger dining room 12x15 or remain with a smaller one (12x12) and use the space for a walk-in pantry 36x60. I wanted both a pantry and a decent size dining room for at least 8 but our footprint won't allow both. I just can't see how useful a 12x12 dining room will be? Thoughts?

My dining room is just a little smaller than 12x12. It is not grand, but I can easily seat 6-8 adults if needed with my table expanded. I also have the luxury of a large opening on one side near the entry and a door to the kitchen on the other for traffic flow. You'll have to decide if entertaining or storage is more important.

How they would be arranged matters. Post a plan of the space, how often you use the DR, and your pantry needs (do you have kids? How would you use your pantry? Food? Small appliances? Other?) for better help.

Lavender--thanks for your thoughts. I do need a place for beverages off the larger buffet space at the end. Appetizers would go on the buffet first to be replaced by the main meal later. I always have a problem finding a place for drinks. They could go on the buffet with the appetizers, but then they'd need a place to go after that when the meal was set out. I'm not sure where I'd put them after that. I'd like a space for them to live permanently. Depending on what kind of entertaining we're doing (kids party vs. holiday vs. adult b-day), usually we have a couple bottles of wine or a pitcher of cocktails I've mixed up in bulk ahead of time, water, and a non-alcoholic beverage like an herbal lemonade (whatever looks good in the garden--basil, mint, lavender, or my fav rosemary!) or a fruity iced tea. Usually people help themselves. Rhome--Looks great! I can see the mirror! ;) I think that's probably best functionally, even though I love the hutch idea visually. Those uppers are 12" deep, right? Even though they would stick out a bit farther than the wall, I think that's fine. That wall with the art would be a great place for something cool or creative. Did you create that modern art yourself? ;) Thanks again!

Deb, one question that I haven't heard yet is, is your library-media room the main gathering/ tv watching in your home? It's a really lovely room (actually every room you've shown us is lovely). I'm so impressed with the gorgeous bookcases your DH built. I see that you have steps down to this room, which would mean that you'd be carrying platters and bowls of food, plates, glasses, etc, down those steps for every meal that you serve in there, as your new dining room. It's only two steps, but you need to seriously think about whether this would become a real irritant after a while, let alone a possible tripping danger. Unfortunately, having the steps would make it near to impossible to move the wall between the present dining room and library, to give you more space in the dining room. That would have been ideal . . . if it was possible. More questions and thoughts: ~do you have a family room or living room that you can move the tv into comfortably? ~ what do you and your DH actually need the most, a home office or a butler's pantry? ~ With both rooms having wide doorways that open into it, instead of actual doors that you can close off, will you be happy seeing a desk and other office things in full view from your kitchen (which is lovely, BTW)? Friends and family will be passing through it getting from your kitchen to the new dining room. ~ If you turn it into a butler's pantry, are you willing to set it up nicely enough so as not to detract from your kitchen or your new dining room? ~ another idea to consider is to just incorporate the present dining room into the kitchen with, perhaps, built-in cabs to house your nice serving pieces, china and crystal in glass-fronted cabs with closed cabs below for storing what ever you need. You could set up a seating area on that side, too, and/or a secretary desk and chair that you can close up when company arrives for a meal. Personally, I think that turning your present dining room into a sitting room, would be a wasted space, that probably wouldn't be used all that much. But, that's JMHO. "The wall ovens were always preferable but optional, as was a 36" wide fridge as opposed to, say, a 31" wide that is taller." Regarding the refrigerator...stick with 36" wide by 70" to 72" tall. Manufacturers in/for the US are standardizing on 36"W x 70" to 72" tall refrigerators as their minimum size offering. Yes, you may find narrower ones here and there, but they're usually low-end of the mainstream refrigerators or very high end manufacturers (e.g., Liebherr). So, plan for this size space for your refrigerator: 38.5" wide x 72" tall. Width: 36" wide + 1.5" for end panels (3/4" on each side) + 1" for air clearance and wiggle room = 38.5" Height: 72" tall This way, you won't have to either search far and wide for a smaller refrigerator or pay $$$$ for a high-end refrigerator. Periodically over the years we've had people come to either here on the Kitchens forum or the Appliances forum frantically looking for a refrigerator to fit a small space (width and/or height). If it's a built-in, you don't have to accommodate the end panels b/c a built-in does not need end panels to hide the sides of the refrigerator. Counter-depth and standard-depth do need the end panels. And don't forget a 24" deep cabinet over the refrigerator (I can't tell for certain from the drawing if it's 24" deep, so I thought I'd mention it!)

Thank you for the comments and suggestions. I would like to address a couple things. Our eat-in area is sufficient for 10 people. I have custom built in benches and a table in he nook area. If I went ahead with the plan to close the dining room, I could always use the open office space across the foyer. It doesn’t lend itself to “office” work anyway. Our front walk is quiet long with a side entry garage, this is the reason most people don’t use the front door. If I were to have a formal occasion, I would certainly close the garage and have people enter this way. However, we very rarely have any formal guests or gatherings that would call for the formal dining room or formal entry. My laundry/mudroom area is very small and there’s no room for style as is (washer/dryer) cabinet for some cleaning supplies. I should also point out, this house has no extra closet space, meaning the closets in the bedrooms are it...no linen closet, utility closet, nothing. Right now, any mop, broom, vacuum, etc are in the spare bedroom closet and in the corner of the tiny pantry. I’m just trying to maximize my kitchen area without having to change the kitchen. I thought a butler’s pantry/entry could do that. I see that I should possibly look at other options.

A lot depends on your family size and age, how often you entertain, and if this is your forever home.

When we bought our house for our family of 5, our dining room seemed plenty big.

Decades later, we have added 2 spouses, 9 grandkids and counting. Even using our eat in kitchen table and dining table, we often exceed our seating for meals with extended family. If you have a growing family and can make your kitchen storage work hard - or consider adding an attractive storage piece in the dining room- go big!

If you don’t have a lot of cabinet/storage space, a pantry sure is helpful. And will be utilized daily.

Maybe you could find a compromise and do the larger dining room , but have one wall as a built in pantry. Just a thought.

I'm not a fan of the oven being in a walkway. I would slide it over and then create a large pantry there and into the dining room. Move the wet bar to the alcove on the other side. The walk in pantry sounds great but it is a bunch of shallow shelving and the rest is just foot space.

If you truly use your dining room, you will want the space...

Tape out a 36x60 pantry, with shelving, and see if the space will work for you - you will have very little space for walking into the depths.

Do you have another eating area besides the dining room and the island? If so how many can you seat there? Also of that is the case how do you intend to use the dining room. If it is only occasionally as in rarely then a smaller room would be ok, but if it is once a week and you’d have 8 people once a week then it might bug you more. If it is rarely and just a few times a year then I’d also consider doing away with it if you have another eating area and use this dining to enlarge the kitchen/ pantry and the other dining area.

I think you would get just as much usable space with floor to ceiling pantry cabinets that are 15” deep. Saving about 3’ of pantry space.

Put another reach-in closet next to the coat closet, and have it open into the foyer like the coat closet. Use that for the pantry.
